UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. MARTIN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,847, dated March 23, 1880.
Application filed January 9, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. MARTIN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part ofthis specification.
My invention relates to the construction of doors and it consists in a door having wire screens permanently connected therein, and removable double panels on both sides, which may be attached or detached at will, so as to make a solid or closed door for winter use and a ventilating-door for the summer, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a door embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical crosssection of the same. Fig. 3 shows one of the panels.
A represents a door of any suitable size. Ordinarily, in the construction of doors, a frame is made and panels inserted and fastened permanently in place. In the door A, instead of panels, I insert screens B, which are fastened permanently in the door, as shown in Fig. 2. The spaces on each side of each screen in the door are filled with removable double panels 0, which are fastened or clamped in place in the door by means of screwsaa, passed through from the inside through I the inside panel, through the screen, and screwed into nuts I) embedded in the inner side of the outer panel.
By means of these removable panels the door can be used as a closed or solid door in winter time and as a ventilating-door in summer time.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by JOHN F. MARTIN.
