Patented Nov. 11, 1941 SANDAL Clarence E. Husker, Water-town, Mass., assignor to- The B. F. Goodrich Company, New York, N. Y., a. corporation of New York Application March 29, 1939, Serial No. 264,763
1 Claim.
This invention relates to sandals for personal wear and is especially useful in the construction of beach sandals.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide comfort, pleasing appearance, to provide simplicity of construction, to provide resistance to wear, and to provide resistance to dampness.
These andother objects will appear from the following description and the accompanying drawing.
Of the drawing Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the sandal conztructed according to and embodying the invenion.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the sole structure.
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view, taken on line 3-: of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral l designates a clog type sole and heel comprising a body ll of wood, cork, compressed fibrous material, or other light weight fibrous material, preferably of thick construction, formed on its upper face to the contour of the foot of the wearer, and preferably, though not necessarily, formed with a a hollow shank l2 between the heel and sole portions. I
Toprovide for protecting the sole from moisture, a covering I 3 of moisture-impervious material, such as vulcanized rubber composition or other rubber-like material completely envelopes the sole. This covering may be formed in situ by depositing a coating about the sole from a solution or dispersion of the coating material, or may be made by assembling sheeted rubber-like material about the sole and seaming the same so as completely to enclose and protect the sole..
To provide a wear resisting surface, a tread layer H, of wear resisting material, such as crepe rubber, rubber composition, or leather is applied to the. tread surface of the sole'over the protective layer II. The tread layer preferably extends as a continuous covering over the tread and breast faces of the heel, theshank, and along the sole to the toe of the sandal, thereby to aiford wear protection to the entire tread surface including the instep.
The upper of the sandal may be of any suitable construction. In the sandal illustrated it comprises a counter l5 and spaced therefrom forwardly of the counter, a vamp IS in the form of a strap extending from edge to edge of the sole and permitting exposure of the toes. The counterand vamp may be of any desired material, a knitted textile material'being preferred. They are secured by adhesion or in any other suitable manner to the sole over the covering ll. An insole I1 is applied over the upper surface of the sole over the lower margins of the upper to pro- To provide for attaching the sandal to the' 7 foot, eyelets I8, 19, are attached to the vamp and counter, and a lace 20 is inserted therethrough so as to cross over the instep.
Various modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as it is defined by the following claim.
I claim:
An article of footwear comprising a sole body of light weight fibrous material and of substantial thickness, a thin seamless waterproof covering of rubber-like material completely enclosing said body including the top, bottom, and side faces thereof and having the characteristics of material deposited from a dispersion of rubberlike material, a wear-resisting outer sole of rubber-like material adhered to-said covering over the tread face, an upper having inwardly turned margins adhered to the covering at the face of the sole opposite the tread face, and an insole adhered to said covering and inwardly-tumed margins, the attachment of said upper, insole, and
outersole being solely by the adhesion to said seamless covering providing completely waterproof protection to said body of fibrous material
