Description

Jan. 20, 1942. A. KRISTENSEN I 2,270,802
ARTICLE HANGER Filed March 9, 1939 J O Q 3 INVENTOR.
ATTORNEY.
Patented Jan. 20, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to article hangers and has for its object to provide a hanger adapted to be mounted upon a door hinge or window glass, to provide a support for articles of clothing etc.
Another object is to design a hanger that may be formed as a stamping from sheet metal, the hanger having a cross sectional shape such as to rigidify the same, as well as to prevent damage to articles hung thereon.
Another object is to provide a hanger adapted to be mounted and retained upon a hinge by insertion of the hinge pin therethrough. In this respect the hanger is formed with a flange adapted to be retained on the upper end of a hinge by insertion of the hinge pin through an aperture therewith of articles hanging on said hanger. In
this respect the hanger has a portion of arcuate section which extends a substantial distance circumferentially about the pin receiving sleeves of the hinge, to cover a substantial portion of said sleeves. 0
Another object is to provide a sheet metal hook with reinforcing means tending to prevent straightening of the hook under comparatively heavy loads.
Another object is to provide a hanger formed 3 of sheet metal and having means adapted to be hooked over the upper edge of a pane of glass, to support the hanger on the glass. The hanger has particular utility in automobiles in that it may be placed upon a slightly lowered window glass to provide means for supporting articles of wearing apparel etc.
Other objects and advantages will become more fully apparent as reference is had to the accompanying drawing wherein my invention is illus- 5 trated, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the hanger mounted on a hinge,
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the hanger and a fragment of the hinge,
Fig. 3 is a top plan of the hanger, and
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan of the hanger.
More particularly, l designates the main body portion of the hanger which is formed of sheet metal having an arcuate cross section of a width such that it extends a substantial distance circumferentially of the hinge pin receiving sleeves 2. At its upper end the hanger body has a flange 3 with an aperture through which the hinge pin 4 extends, and the head 5 of the hinge pin rests upon the flange 3. The free end of the hanger body I is bent to form a hook B and the arcuate cross section is continued throughout the length of the hook portion to rigidity the same and to provide a smooth exterior which will not damage articles hung thereon.
In encircling a substantial portion of the pin receiving sleeves 2 the hanger retains itself against lateral displacement and covers a substantial area of the hinge which otherwise might be contacted by articles supported upon the hanger. As may be seen by reference to Figs. 1 and 2, the hanger covers the joint between the two uppermost relatively movable pin receiving sleeves 2 and thereby prevents contact of articles supported on the hanger therewith.
Although specific embodiments are illustrated and described, it will be understood that various changes may be made within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of the invention, and such changes are contemplated.
What is claimed is:
A hanger formed of sheet metal having a main body portion curved transversely of its length at its lower end to form a clothes receiving hook, saidmain body portion and at least a portion of said hook being concave-convex in cross section whereby strength is imparted to said hook and whereby said main portion is able to conform to ,the exterior of hinge pin receiving sockets as a locating means, the other end of said main body portion being flattened and bent in a direction normal to the length of said body portion, said other end having a hinge pin receiving opening therethrough at such distance from said body portion that when a hinge pin is inserted therethrough said concave-convex portion closely fits against the hinge pin sockets.
