This invention relates to improvements in garments and more particularly to a garment designed for protection against the elements in a manner which affords a maximum of protection while presenting a.`neat and finished external appearance.
A further object of my invention is to provide a garment of the character described comprising a pair of trousers of relatively heavy material provided with any desired or convenient suspension means having secured interiorly thereof a pair of relatively light, flexible leg covering members, the lower portions of which are provided with reenforced contractible members closed by means of separable fastener elements.
A further object of my invention is to provide a garment comprising a pair of trousers of relatively heavy .material to provide a maximum of protection against the elements and having secured interiorly thereof a pair of relatively light leg covering members freely secured thereto to provide a maximum of flexibility and to facilitate the application of the garment, having novel means at the terminal ends of said leg covering members to positively secure the relatively light covering members to the legs of the wearer.
embodying my invention shown partlyin section for the sake of clarity, Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevational view taken on lines 2`2 of Fig. l showing one of the terminal ends of the leg covering members having a cuff member secured thereto with the fastener elements thereof in open position, and
Figl. 3 is a top plan view taken on lines 3-3 of Fig. f
In the drawing the garment of my invention is shown to comprise a pair of trousers I0 of relatively heavy material, the lower ends of the l trousers being doubled upon themselves and reentrantly bent to provide the trouser ends II and an inner protective member comprising a body portion and a pair of leg covering members depending therefrom. The upper edge of the trousers is folded over the upper edge of the body member I3 for the reception of an elastic member I4 to normally tend to contract the marginal member I3 about the waist of the wearer on ap-` plication of the trousers. The garment is further provided with any desired or convenient suspender and closure elements I5 and I6 respectively. The trousers I0 are preferably made of relatively heavy inflexible material. 'I'he inner protective lmember is secured at its upper marginal edge to the' interior of the trousers at I2 as set forth above and the outer sides of the leg covering members are secured to the interior of the adjacent portions I8 of the respective trouser legs to normally hold the leg covering members andr their cuff members within and above the lower ends of the trousers and to limit the movement of the leg covering members within the trousers. The trousers IG are of correspondingfeatures and outline; a description of one will suffice for both;l one is shown partly broken away in Fig. 1. The leg covering members I1 are made of light, flexible material so that they will yield freely upon the insertion of the wearers leg therein, permitting the garment to be applied in a rapid and convenient fashion and obviating the awkwardness inherent in garments of the structure heretofore in common use. As will be noted from Fig. 1 of the drawing, the leg covering members are supported from the waistband of the trousers and the outer side of each leg covering member is secured for substantially the major portion of its length to the interior of the adjacent portionof the respective trouser legs. The terminal ends I9 of the leg covering inembers are tapered and have marginally secured thereto the closed peripheral edges 2| on contractible cuff members 22. The latter are provided withlongitudinal slits 23, whereby said vportionrof the inner protective member and is Y sewed or otherwise secured-thereto at I2 in a. manner to provide a tube like marginal waist contractible members 22 normally"`assume an open position as in Fig. 2 so that the garment may be donned in an extremely easy manner, the open ends of the contractible membersenabling the thrusting of the leg through the garment with a. minimum of effort. After the garment has been donned, the contractible members 22 may be closed by means of any suitable separable fastener elements 24 along the slit 23 thereof. The contractible members 22 are preferably made of knitted or other contractible material to provide neat and tight-fltting'lower ends for the leg covering members. From the gforegoing it will be seen that the garment will present the external appearance of a neat and smooth fitting garment while the wearers legs are snugly enveloped by the leg covering members which, being closed by the contractible members 22, provide a maximum of protection from the elements.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A garment comprising a pair of trousers, an inner protective member comprising a pair of leg covering members having open lower ends, said leg covering members being substantially coextensive with the legs of the said pair of trousers and supported from the waistband of the trousers, contractible cui members secured to the open lower ends of said leg covering members, said cuiT members being provided with longitudinal slits to enable them to normally assume an open position to facilitate donning the garment, means carried by the contractible members to close said slits when the garment is Worn, the outer side of each leg covering member being secured for substantially the major portion of its length to the interior of the adjacent portion of the respective trouser legs in position to normally hold the leg covering members and their cuff members within and above the open lower ends of the trousers and to limit the movement of the leg covering members within the trousers.
2. A garment comprising a pair of trousers, an
inner protective member comprising a body portion and a. pair of leg covering members having open lower ends, the upper edge ofthe trousers being folded over the upper edge of the body portion of the inner protective member to define a tube-like marginal waist member adapted to receive a member to contract the garment; about4 the wearer's waist, said leg covering members being substantially coextensive with the legs of the said pair of trousers and supported from the waistband of the trousers, contractible cuEE members secured to the open lower ends of said leg covering members, said cui members being provided with longitudinal slits to enable them to normally assume an open position to facilitate donning the garment, means carried by the contractible members to close said slits when they
