Description
March 3, 1942. H. D. CARROLL NASAL RESPIRATOR Filed Aug. 10, 1940 Q Invcnidr //ar0 /a" fi. CZr/O A iiomey Patented Mar. 3, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,274,886 NASAL misrma'ron Harold D. Carroll, Marion, Ohio Application August 10, 1940, Serial No. 352,154
. wardly-curved as indicated by the numeral IT in 1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in nasal respirators for insertion in the nostrils to filter the air to prevent dust, pollen, and other impurities entrained in the air from passing into the nasal passages, and the primary object of the invention is'to provide a simple and eflicient arrangement of this character which is invisible when worn.
Other important objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description taken in connection with the drawing, wherein for purposes of illustration the preferred embodiment of my invention is shown. In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a general schematic view showing one of my respirators mounted in the nostril.
Figure 2 is a view looking toward the small end of the respirator and as shown by the arrow in Figure 1. A
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view, and looking in the direction 'of the arrow shown in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an enlarged longitudinal vertical sectional view, the section being taken on line 4-4 or Figure 3.
Figure 4, the shape of this wall conforming to the shape of the heel region of the floor 6. An inner wall portion 18 arises from the straight longitudinal edge I of the floor 6 while another longitudinal wall portion l9 rises from the curved or bowed edge 8 of the floor 6, the wall portions l8 and l 9 being connected with and merged into the end wall portions l5 and IS, with the upper edges of the side wall portions inclining upwardly and rearwardly in a graduated manner as indicated in Figure 4. In addition the wall portion 18 is inwardly curvedly deflected as indicated in Figure 2, while the wall portion I9 is outwardly curvedly deflected as also indicated in Figure 2. The upper edges of the various wall portions cooperate to produce the oval aperture!!! which has rounded and smoothed edges.
Figure 5 is a plan view of the spring retaining tudinal edge 8 is longitudinally bowed. The heel end of the floor 6 is symmetrically rounded as indicated by the numeral 9 while the opposite end is asymmetrically rounded as indicated by the numeral it, so that the heel area of the bottom is slightly smaller in area than the toe region. The
toe region is provided with a plurality of relatively closely spaced holes II to admit air into the interior of the respirator body, while the intermediate part of the floor 6 and the heel area thereof are provided with respective openings i2 and I3 separated by a transverse bar 3. The opening i2 is substantially square in shape while the opening [3 is substantially semi-circular in shape.
A continuous wall rises from the edges of the bottom or floor 6, the said wall being composed of the relatively short rearwardly inclining front wall portion l5 following the contour of the toe region of the floor S, the relatively high or tall wall portion [6 which extends substantially perpendicularly and then is rearwardly and up- A replaceable pad of lambs wool or the like designated by the numeral 2! lies removably on the top of the floor 6 and over the holes II and the openings l2 and I3, and this is held removably in place by a spring wire loop 22 which when placed on top of the pad within the side walls of the respirator springs open to conform to the contour of the walls and clamp the pad down in place. The spring loop and the pad may be easily removed for replacement by a simple tool. The pad 2! will be soaked with medicinal mineral oil of suitable character to increase the filtering effect of the pad and to provide the desired medication. I
As indicated in Figure 1 of the drawing, the curved rear wall it is placed against the rear wall of the nostril as indicated by the numeral 23, when the respirator is inserted in the nostril so that the slanting front wall 15 bears as indicated by the numeral 26 on the front part of the nostril, while the side wall l8 bears against the cartilage between the nostril and the outer wall l9 bears against the side of the interior of the nostril, all at a level above the lower end of the nostril so as to be out of sight when worn.
Although I have shown and described herein a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be definitely understood that I do not wish to limit the application of the invention thereto except as may be required by the scope of the subioined claim.
What is claimed is:
A nasal respirator comprising a body consisting of a bottom plate, said plate having large ment resting upon said bottom plate over the perforatlons thereof, and removable means holding said pad down in place, said body being horizontally elongated and formed with rounded ends. the inner longitudinal side of said body being substantially straight and the outer longitudinal side of said body being laterally outwardly curved, the front end wall being short and sloping upwardly andinwardlyto flt in the front portion of a nostril, the rear wall being much m HAROLD n.
