This invention relates to improvements in cartons or containers for relatively small commerwhich the operation of opening also serves to partially withdraw and expose the contents in position to be readily removed by the fingers. Other objects will appear from time to time as the following description proceeds.

Forillustrative purposes I have shown and described my invention as applied to a carton-of vest pocket size for holding a plurality of staple fasteners for use in stapling machines. It willbe understood from the following description,

however, that the same idea is equally applicable to containers for a wide variety of commercial articles, and particularly to such articles that are packed parallel to each other and extend substantially the full length of the carton, such as matches, pencils, crayon, stick candy, playing 2 cards and the like.

The invention may best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a carton made in accordance with my invention, showing one face thereof, and with said carton in fully' closed position.

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the carton shown in Fig. 1, but showing the reverse or opposite face thereof.

Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the carton in open position and with the contacts removed.

Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. l, and indicating the method of grasping the movable end flap when opening the carton.

Fig. 5 is an enlarged section taken on line 5-8 of Fig. 3 and indicating the end fiap in fully opened position.

' Fig. 6 is a horizontal section through the body of the carton showing a plurality of strips of staple fasteners nested therein.

Referring now to details of the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawing, in indicates generally the carton made of pasteboard or similar material. The body of said carton consists of a front wall ll, rear wall l2 and side 'toppanel 2| and-cover fiap 26.

continuous enclosure. In the form shown herein, all of said walls are ,formed from a single sheet of pasteboard with the ends of the latter overlapped and pasted together to form one side wall 12. Adjacent the bottom edge of the front face I l is formed a crease line 15 which is spaced from the bottom of the carton substantially the same distance as the width of the side walls I! and It so as to form a' panel section It normally forming a continuation of the front face II when the carton is in closed position, as shown in Fig. 1. The opposite ends of the panel section, however, are separated from the adjacent side walls II and H by slits I1 and 18 as clearly shown in Fig. l.

The bottom and topof the carton is formed by a movable fiap indicated generally at 22, and consisting of a bottom panel l9, rear panel 2 2*, The bottom is defined by a crease line 20 along the lower front edge of the carton, and a second crease line 21 normally abutting the lower edge of the rear wall I 2 when the carton is in closed posi-' tion, as is best shown in Fig. 4. The rear panel 22 is connected to bottom panel l9 along crease line 2| and extends upwardly the full length of the carton to crease line 23. The cover fiap 26 is joined to top panel 24 along crease line 25,

and is arranged to fit in underlapping relation in effect a continuous inner lining member independent of, and slidable longitudinally within, the body of the carton, so as to permit the latter to be opened when desired in the followingmanner:

It will be observed in,Figs. 1 and 2 that a notch 28 is formed in the front wall It adjacent the top edge thereof, and a similar registering notch 29 is formed at the top edge of the rear wall l2. By grasping the exposed portions of the movable fiap 22 between the fingers in the region exposed by the notches 28 and 29, as indicated in Fig. 4, the entiremovable fiap or inner lining member 22 can be drawn-upwardly to a position walls 13 and H suitably connected to form a' shown in Fig. 5. During the upward sliding movement Just described, the lower front panel II swings upwardly, and the contents of the carton would also be elevated to a higher level so that they now rest on the panel I I and with their upper ends proiecting above the top of the carton walls, as clearly indicated in Fig. 5. In this position the cover fiap I is fully withdrawn from engagement with the front wall ll, so that said cover fiap together with the top panel 24 is free to be unfolded upwardly as indicated in dottedlines in Fig. 5, to facilitate the withdrawal of the contents of the, carton.

To replace the cover and close the box, it is only necessary to return the cover flap II and top panel 24 to substantially the same position shown in full lines in Fig. 5, and then push the movable section downwardly into its original closed position indicated in Fig. 4. It will be understood from the foregoing description that my improved form of carton is particularly advantageous for use with articles such as stripsof staple fasteners indicated generally at til, 30, which are nested together and packed in parallel relation with each other so as to extend substantially the full length of the carton, as shown in Figs. 4, and 6. With articles of this nature they are moved bodily upward by the initial sliding movement of the cover flap so that their upper ends will be partially extended and exposed above the walls of the carton in position for ready removal by the fingers, as already described.

Among the advantages of my improved device as above described is the ease with which the carton can be opened and closed without fumbling with a cover flap to open it along its rear hinged edge, as is usually the case with ordinary cartons, asfor instance those used for playing cards. with my improved device the whole inner lining member of the carton slides bod'ly so as to fully release the cover flap 26 from engagement with the front wall I I' before said cover flap and adjacent top panel 24 are swung upwardly to fully opened position.

It will also be noted that the provision of the notch 29 along the upper edge of the rear wall l2 affords especial ease in opening the carton,

' since it permits ready access of the fingers both face H.

Although I have shown and described one particular embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction shown-and described, but that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

A carton having a body consisting of front, rear and side walls, a fiap movable relative to said body and consisting of a plurality of hinged portions including a front panel normally disposed in the same plane as the front wall, a bottom panel hinged tosaid front panel and normally defining a bottom for said body, a rear panel extending along the inner face of said rear wall, and a top panel and front cover flap normally closing the upper end of said body, said front and bottom panels being separated from said side walls so that said movable flap can be moved upwardly within said carton body and thereby swing said front panel into position to form a temporarybottom disposed in a plane above the normal bottom of the carton body, and said front panel being of such length as compared with said cover flap to permit said top panel and cover flap to be moved out of engagement with adjacent portions of said body.
