My present invention relates to baby carriages and, more particularly, to a collapsible bassinet adapted to be removably suspended from body supports on the chassis of a baby carriage.

The principal object of this invention is to provide a foot well in a bassinet.

Another object of the invention is to provide a foot well in a bassinet that may be covered, at will, by a displaceable section of the bottom of the bassinet.

A further object of the invention is to provide a foot well, having collapsible sides, in a bassinet.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a foot well in a bassinet having a collapsible endless skirt, suspended from the bassinet at the perimeter of its bottom and surrounding the foot well, the walls of the foot well also being collapsible.

A further object of the invention is to provide a foot well in a bassinet and having a rigid bottom and collapsible sides.

Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description had in connection with the drawings. 1

To the above end, generally stated, the invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and defined in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.

Referring to the drawings:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a baby carriage shown by means of broken lines, with the exception of the bassinet which is shown by means of full lines, with some parts broken away, and has the invention embodied therein;

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bassinet removed from the chassis and showing the skirt and foot well collapsed;

Fig. 3 is a plan view of the bassinet, with the foot well open;

The body 52 of the bassinet further includes top and bottom endless tubular metallic frame members it and I5, respectively, to which the fabric is secured, and which gives said body its form. It will be noted that the bottom frame member I5 is somewhat smaller in width and length than the top frame member I4 and holds the sides and ends of the body [2 in downwardly converging relation. The skirt 3 at its lower edge is attached to an endless tubular metallic member it, like the members I4 and i5, and of substantially the same size as theframe member IE, but somewhat smaller in cross-section. An endless slot is formed in the underside of the frame member Hi, and an endless slot is formed in the inner side of each of the frame members I5 and it. Each frame member [4, l5 and i6 is formed in two sections, and said sections are connected by a coupling sleeve at the ends of the body l2.

The fabric at its upper edge portion, at the bottom of the body 12 and at the lower edge portion of the skirt i3, is sewed to ropes ll, l8 and 19, respectively, in endless arrangement. These ropes I1, I 8 and i9 and the attached portions of the fabric are threaded through the sections of the frame members l4, l5 and i6, respectively, with the fabric extending through the slots in said members, and thereafter the sections of said members are connected by their coupling sleeves.

The bottom 20 of the body I2 is also made of a fabric, such as drilling or any other suitable material. This bottom 2! has a displaceable section 2! at the front end portion of the body l2. Said bottom 29 and its displaceable section 2| are preferably, but not necessarily, formed from the said piece of fabric. The bottom 20, at its marginal edge portion, is sewed to the rope l8 and attached portion of the body l2. The bottom section ill, at its marginal portion, is attached to a U-shaped tubular metallic frame member 22 by means of a rope 23. Said bottom section 2! is sewed to the rope 23 and said rope and attached portion of the fabric is threaded through the frame member 22 with saidfabric extending through a slot in the inner face of said members.

The U-shaped frame member 22 closely follows the contour of the body 12, and its rear or free ends are flattened and pivotally mounted on rivets 24 secured in plates 25 on the inner side The rivets 24 and other rivets 26 extend through holes in the plates 25, the slots in the frame members l5 and holes in the outer sides of said member and rigidly secure the plates 25 to the frame member 15. Washers 24 on the rivets 24 between the end portions of the U-shaped frame 2 and the plates 25 insure free and easy swinging movement of the bottom section 2|.

When the bottom section 2| is closed, its U- shaped frame 22 loosely rests on a pair of brackets 2! secured by rivets to the frame member l5. In opening the bottom section 2|, the fabric forming said section and the bottoms 28, transversely folds on a line extending between the axes of the two rivets 24, as indicated at 23, and permits the bottom section 2| to lay flat on the bottom 20.

Braces, indicated as entireties by the numeral 29, connect the frame members I4 and 5 at the ends of the body |2. These braces 29 hold the frame members 4 and I5 spaced apart, with the fabric held taut therebetween. When the braces 29 are released, the body l2 may be folded with the frame members l4 and i5, the one upon the other. The braces 29 are disclosed and broadly claimed in my pending application filed September l, 1938, under Serial Number 227,899, and formally allowed September 15, 1939.

The skirt I3 is free to fold when the bassinet is removed from the body supports l0 and placed on a floor, an automobile seat or other support. When the skirt I3 is folded, the frame member l6 closely engages the frame member I5.

Loop-like members 30, attached to the upper ends of pairs of coiled springs 3| anchored to the upper brackets of the braces 29 on the frame member l4, separably interlock with the hooks I on the body supports Hi and hold the bassinet suspended therefrom.

Spring stabilizers 32, indicated by broken lines i in Fig. l, are anchored to the side members of the chassis 8 and are separably connected to the frame member I6 by clips 33 and restrict the lateral swinging movement of the bassinet in respect to the chassis I0.

The hood 9 is attached to the frame member I4 by brackets 34.

A displaceable back support 35, of any suitable material, such as drilling, is sewed at 36 to the bottom fabric 20, transversely thereof, at the free end of the body section 2|, when open. The free or upper end of the back support 35 is releasably secured to the frame member l4 by means of hooks 31 secured to said back support by looped portions of tape 38. Obviously, by releasing the hooks 37 from the frame member M, the back support 35 may be folded fiat onto the bottom 20.

The fabric forming the bottom and the bottom section 2|, at the pivots 24, is cut away to afford clearance from the end portions of the frame member 22 during swinging movement thereof, and the edge portions of said fabric are bound with tape, as indicated at 39.

At the front end of the body I2 is a foot well 4|], the sides and ends of which are collapsible and formed of fabric, such as the bottom 23. The front end and the two sides of the foot well 40, at their upper edge portions, are folded outwardly upon themselves and secured to the top l8 by sewing. The rear end of the foot well 40, at its upper edge portion, is folded under the front edge portion of the bottom 28 and secured thereto by sewing. It will be noted that the rear end of the foot well is substantially in a vertical plane that passes through the axes of the aligned rivets 24. The bottom of the foot well 40 is formed by a double thickness of fabric with a piece of board 4| interposed therebetween. When the foot well 40 is collapsed, the rigid bottom thereof is closely positioned in the top of said well.

Obviously, the bassinet may be used as a bed when the bottom section 2|, when closed, covers the foot well 4|], so that a mattress 42, shown by means of broken lines, may be laid flat on the bottom 20 and the bottom extension 2|. In this use of the bassinet, the back support is released from the frame member 4 and laid flat on the bottom 20; or for use in a sitting or reclining position, the back support 35 is secured in an operative position and the bottom section 2| is opened to uncover the foot well 40, and the mattress 42 is folded, as shown by broken lines in Fig. 1. In this folded position of the mattress 42, the front section thereof is folded under the intermediate section thereof to form a seat of double thickness, and the rear or head section of said mattress is laid on the back support 35. The size of the foot well is such that bedding or clothing may be placed under and around the feet and legs of a child sitting up or reclining in the bassinet.

When the bassinet is removed from the chassis and placed on the floor, the seat of an automobile or other support and used as a bed, the skirt l3 and the foot well will collapse and fold under the bottom of the bassinet. Or by placing the bassinet on an automobile seat with the foot well 4 forward of the front thereof, the skirt I3 will collapse and fold under the bassinet and the foot well 48 will hang downwardly in front of said seat. In this use of the bassinet, a child may sit up or recline therein while riding in an automobile.

From the foregoing, it will be understood that the invention described is capable of various modifications within the scope of the invention herein disclosed.

What I claim is:

l. A bassinet body having a fabric bottom comprising a fixed rear section and a removable front section, a U-shaped frame in which the front bottom section is secured, and a foot Well under the front bottom section, said frame being pivoted to the body at the rear wall of the foot well for upwardly and rearwadly swinging movement into an open position on the rear bottom section to afford a seat reinforcing the rear bottom member.

2. The structure defined in claim 1 further including a displaceable back for the seat.

3. The structure defined in claim 1 in which the two sections of the fabric bottom are connected at their adjacent ends and supported at their side and outer end portions.

l. A bassinet body having endless upper and lower frame members and a fabric bottom comprising a fixed rear section and a removable front section, said two bottom sections being connected at their adjacent ends, said rear bottom section being secured at its sides and rear end to the lower frame member, a foot well under the front bottom section, a U-shaped frame with the outer ends of its arms secured to the lower frame member substantially at the rear wall of the foot well for upwardly and rearwardly swinging movement into an open position on said rear bottom section to afford a seat reinforcing said rear bottom section, and a fabric back for the seat secured at its lower end to the rear bottom section and releasably secured at its upper end to the frame member.
