(Cl. 206-78) This invention relates generally to packages that have one Wall or a portion thereof formed of flexible transparent material through which the contents of the packages may be viewed or displayed, and the invention especially contemplates such a package for powdered, granular or other substance capable of flowing.

One knownpackage of this character comprises a bag-like structure polygonal in plan which includes two opposed layers of sheet material, at least one of which is transparent, that are secured together during formation of the package along all margins except one which provides a mouth through which the powder or other substance to be packaged is inserted and which is closed by sealing the two layers together along said margin. Generally said layers are thermoplastic or have thermoplastic coatings, and margins of the layers at the mouth of the package are sealed together under application of heat and pressure.

During the manufacture and filling of packages of this character, frequently some of the powder or other substance being packaged adheres to or becomes lodgedbetween the margins of the layers of packagin material that form the mouth of the package, so as to cause imperfect or insecure sealing of said margins. Also, such substance is visible between said sealed margins and produces an untidy and unattractive appearance, especially when the packaged substance is colored. Moreover, when all margins oi the package are crimp-sealed, the contrast between the seal along the margin at the mouth and the seals along the other margins, is accentuated and seriously detracts from the appearance of the package.

Prime objects of the invention are to provide a package of the general character described which shall embody novel and improved features of construction that, will overcome the aforesaid objections and disadvantages of knownpackages; and to provide such a package 'so constructed that the sealed margins at the mouth of the package shall be reenforced and securely connected together and any of the packaged substance that may have lodged between said margins shall be invisible.

The transparent sheet is arranged in superposed relation to the opaque sheet and has all marginal portions thereof, except one, secured to the corresponding marginal portions of the opaque sheet as indicated at 4, 5 and 6. The other marginal portion 1 of the transparent sheet is initially free from the corresponding marginal portion 8 of the opaque sheet so as to form an opening or mouth between said marginal portions through which a commodity may be inserted into the pocket formed between the sheets, as shown in Figures 1 and 3.

The marginal portion 7 of the transparent sheet terminates short of the marginal portion 8 of the opaque sheet, or, conversely the marginal portion 8 of the opaque sheet initially extends beyond the corresponding marginal portion '5 of the transparent sheet, so that said marginal portion 8 forms a flap to be folded over and secured to the 'marginalportion l of the transparent sheet for closing the said mouth and sealing the package as shown in Figures 2 and 4.

The sheets I and 2 may have their marginal portions secured to each other in any suitable manner, but preferably the marginal portions 6, 5 and 6 of the transparent sheet are sealed directly to the correspondin marginal portions of the adjacent side of the opaque sheet.

It is desirable that the transparent sheet be thermoplastic or have a thermoplastic coating at the side thereof next to the opaque sheet so that the marginal portions 4, 5 and 6 may be sealed under application of heat and pressure, with or without crimping 9.

Also, it is desirable that the side of the opaque sheet I adjacent the transparent sheet have a suitable thermoplastic coating, especially where the sheet 2 is not thermoplastic or does not have a thermoplastic coating on the outside, so that the marginal portion 8 of the opaque sheet'may be sealed to the outer side of the marginal portion 1 of the transparent sheet by application of heat and pressure, with or without crimping Ill.

Both sides of the opaque sheet preferably are of the same color. The advantage of this will be apparent when it is observed that the side of the opaque sheet next to the transparent sheet marginal portion will correspond in color to the other marginal portions 4, 5 and 6, and thereby ensure a minimum of contrast in appearance in the several marginal portions of the package.

To provide a neat and attractive appearance for the package, preferably all of the sealed marginal zones 4, 5 and 8 are of uniform width and character, and the sealed folded over marginal portion 8 of the opaque sheet is of the same width and character as the other marginal portions.

A package of this character is ofespecial utility for packaging powder, granular or other flowing materials where it is desired that-the contents of the package shall be displayed or visible through at least one wall of the package.

The package may be filled in any suitable manner; for example, the package may be formed, filled and sealed in a continuous operation as described in my copending application Serial No. 290,604 filed August 17, 1939.

With my invention, the marginal portion 8 of the opaque sheet is sealed to the clean outside of the marginal portion I of the transparent sheet, so that a secure seal and closure of the package is ensured. At the same time, the folded over opaque marginal portion 8 covers or obscures any particles of the commodity that may be lodged beneath the marginal portion 1 of the transparent sheet so that none of the commodity will be visible in the seal. Furthermore the folded over marginal portion or flap 8 reenforces the sealed mouth of the packinside of said marginal portion 1 and the main portion of the opaque sheet and another seal between the outside of said marginal portion 'I and the folded over flap 8.

The closed package may be easily opened by tearing the sheets along the edge of the folded over flap 8 which provides a relatively stiff and straight edge to facilitate tearing of the sheets.

Many modifications and changes in the details of structure of the package will occur to those skilled in the art as within the spirit and scope of the invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

A display package containing powder and comprising an opaque back sheet having the same color at both sides, a transparent sheet overlying one side of said opaque sheet and having all marginal portions except one sealed directly to the corresponding marginal portions of said side of the opaque sheet along zones of uniform width and appearance and forming a powder receiving pocket between the sheets having a mouth between said one marginal portion of the transparent sheet and said opaque sheet, said one marginal portion of the transparent sheet terminating short of the corresponding marginal portion of the opaque sheet which forms a flap which is folded over and sealed to the outside of said one marginal portion of the transparent sheet along a zone of substantially the same appearance as .the other said zones to close said mouth and conceal any powder that lies between said opaque sheet and said marginal portion of the transparent sheet at said mouth, the color of the opaque sheet being visible throughout all of said zones and said fiap being substantially indistinguishable from the other sealed zones so that said zones form a continuous border surrounding said compartment and of substantially uniform appearance throughout.
