Description

Patented Nov. 10, 1942 GARMENT Raymond E. English, Bath, Maine, and Julius Grossman, Newton, Mass., assignors to Congross Shirt Company, Boston, Mass., a corporation of Massachusetts Application November 6, 1940, Serial No. 364,472
1 Claim.
This invention relates to coats or jackets having detachable linings fashioned to be worn as individual garments. Its objects is to provide such apparel in which the lining, while attached to the coat proper preferably adjacent the collar, can, as desired, be secured to the inside of the coat front to form a lining or be detached from the front and independently closed to form an individual under garment or vest, without detachment from the coat at the collar and Without removing any portion of the apparel from the wearer. For ordinary use the collar attachment may be permanent, although separable fastening means may be employed if complete separation is desired.
As will appear from a detailed description of the invention, its further purpose is to effect general improvements in the construction of such apparel.
In the drawing:
Fig. l is a perspective view of our novel coat shown with the inner lining member attached to the coat proper at the collar, but independently closed in front forming an individual under vest, and
Fig. 2 shows the coat laid open with the inner member completely attached and serving as a coat lining.
Our novel garment is composed of an outer member, or coat proper 2, and an inner member1 3. The member 2 has a body portion 4, sleeves 6 and collar 8 fashioned as desired. It has a front closure I which is preferably a slide fastener, although other suitable fastening means,
such as buttons, snaps, or the like, may be emc' ployed.
The inner member 3 is shaped as a vest, preferably sleeveless, and having the armholes I2 and pockets 25. It also has a front closure ifi which may be a slide fastener or other conventional means.
The inner member 3 has snap fasteners it exposed on its inner surface along the right hand margin of the closure lli, as viewed in Fig. l, and similar fasteners it on the left hand side. outer member 2 has a flap 253 secured along its right hand edge, as viewed in Fig. 2, with fasteners 2li, complementary to fasteners it, exposed on the inner surface of the fiap. Similarly, a flap 23 on the left hand side of the jacket has inside fasteners 26 complementary to the fasteners I8 of the member 3.
The member 3 is secured to the member 2, with both members right side out, by fastening means 28 at the collar and to insure that the inner The Y member always ts smoothly over the shoulders with the armholes always in registry With the holes for the sleeves this fastening means preferably continues for a substantial distance and supports the inner member 3 throughout the entire extent of its attachment at the collar. Stitching may be employed for this purpose ii a permanent attachment is desired or, for detachability, we preferably employ a slide fastener as shown in Fig. 2 having one series of interlocking members attached to the base of the collar of the member 2 and another series 32 attached to the upper edge of the member 3 and interlocked by movement of slide 36 in a conventional manner.
With the garment constructed as above described and with its members secured together at 23, a heavy coat for outdoor Wear is provided by securing together the fasteners l and 24 and the fasteners I8 and 2G so that the member 3 forms a lining for `the outer member 2.
To convert the garment into coat and vest, the wearer, without removing the garmen need merely unfasten the snaps I6 and 2e and the snaps I8 and 26 after which the inner member 3 may be closed by the closure i4 while the coat proper is allowed to hang open or may be independently closed if desired. The heavy outdoor garment is thereby converted quickly and easily into an outer jacket and under vest 3 of light weight suitable for indoor wear Without requiring detachment of the fastening 28.
If a fully detachable vest or lining is desired, as pointed out above, in place of the stitches, 28 of Fig. l, a slide fastener across the back of the collar can be used, With interlocking members 36 and 32 on coat and lining respectively as in Fig. 2. The wearer can detach at the collar without removing the garment, remove the coat and wear the vest alone, which supplies a useful single garment of good appearance.
This novel apparel supplies many uses with nicety and completeness and without sacrificing good fit or good appearance.
Although we have described in detail a preferred embodiment of our invention, it is to be understood that that embodiment is subject to various changes in design to suit the needs of individual users and our invention is to be limited only as the appended claim requires.
We claim:
Acoat having outer and inner members both provided with armholes and fashioned as individual garments attached together adjacent the collar of the coat with a slide fastener supporting the inner member throughout a substantial distance across the shoulders of the wearer to insure a smooth t over the shoulders and a constant registry of the armholes of the two garments, independent front closures for the two members, and means for securing the front of the inner member to the inside front of the outer member sothat the inner member forms a lining for the outer member, both members being right side out when thus secured so that the members can be detached from each other in front and independently closed without removing either garment from the wearer or detaehing them at said collar slide fastener.
