SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 230,273, dated July 20, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. HANNA- FORD, of the town ot' Lake, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boots and Shoes, ot' which the following is a speeltication.
Myinveution relates to an improvement upon the device patented by me October 14, 1879, (PatentNo.220,475;) audits Objectis to provide the boot or shoe with a double elastic air-ch amber between its soles, which will give greater elasticity and secure a more colnplete `ventilation, and with a better and more secure manner of fastening the intermediate elastic lift of the heel to the sole and to the wearing-lifts.
The invention consists, first, in the combination, with a boot or shoe, ot' a perforated elastic middle sole molded or otherwise formed with grooves or chaunels'on both sides, so as to increase the elasticity ot' such middle sole and to produce two Ventilating air-chambers, one above and one below such elastic middle sole; second, iu providing the elastic middle sole with a depressed edge on either side to receive the edge of the upper and quarter when used in a rubber bootI orslloe; third, in the combination of this peculiar elastic middle sole with the perforated inne-r sole; fourth, in providing thc elastic intermediate lift ofthe heel with a metal plate embedded within the lift, which is molded around it, for holding the heads ofthe securing screws or nails and preventing them from working through lby the movement of the heel; fifth, in the combination of the heel provided with the elastic lift,
having the embedded metal plate, and having vertical holes passing through said elastic lift, with holes extending up into the interior ot' the boot or shoe at its heel, for Ventilating the heel ofthe boot or shoe; sixth, in the combination of the perforated elastic middle sole, grooved on both sides to form two air-chambers, with an elastic heel having` one or more air-chambers connected with the airchambers of the'sole; and, further, in the combination, construction, and arrangement of the principal parts composing my Ventilating boot or shoe, all as more fully hereinafter explained.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, Figure l is a vertical central longitudinal section of the foot portion of a hoot or shoe having my improved yielding and ventilatiug sole and heel; Fig. 2, a cross-section ofthe same near the toe, on line 2 2; Fig. 3, a cross-section through the heel, on line 3 3; Fig. 4, a cross-section of one edge ot' the sole ot' a rubber boot, showing the position ot' the upper between the outer sole and the elastic middle sole; Fig. 5, a bottom view of the perforated elastic middle sole; Fig. fi, a cross-section, on a larger scale, of a sm all portion of this elastic sole; Fig. 7, a separate view ofthe elastic heel-lift, with the. position of the metal plate indicated by dotted lines, and Fig. S a separate view ofthe metal plate.
Like letters denote corresponding parts in all the figures Ais the upper and quarter ot' a boot or slice; B, the outer sole; and C, the inner sole, the latter heilig provided with perforationsuJ at the toe and heel, and, it' desired, throughout the body ot' the sole, which holes are of any suitable size, shape, and number, it only being necessary that the openings should be suffi! cient to allow the air to esca-pe freely from the chambers of the solc and heel when they are compressed, so as not to burst the boot or shoe at any point.
Between the inner and outer soles' is placed an elastic middle sole, D, made ot' india-rnbber or other suitable elastic material. This middle sole has a number of perforations, b, and is molded or otherwise formed with intersecting grooves or channels c on each side, which, when the elastic sole is placed between the inner and outer soles, form two air-chain bers, one above and one below the elastic sole. These air-chambers are kept expanded by the elastic projections d, formed by the intersecting grooves; butin walking the pressure brought to bear upon the inner sole causes such projections to give and the air-chambers to be contracted, expelling most of the air contained in them, and when the projections are relieved of this pressure (as when the Vfoot is raised) they will expand the air-chambers and cause a partial vacuum therein, which will draw in'fresh air. This elastic middle sole may be covered on top and bottom by thin -sheets E of rubber cloth or other material; but these sheets can be dispensed with. 1f

In a leather' boot or shoe the elastic middle sole would be smaller than the inner and outer soles, and be surroundedA by welts F, placed between the inner and outer soles, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3; but in a rubber boot, Fig. 4, the middle sole would be nearly or quite the same. size as the bottom of the boot, and would have its edge depressed, as shown at c in Figs. 4 and 5, either on its lower or upper side, to make room for the upper and quarter.
G is the heel of the boot or shoe, having' an elastic intermediate lift, H. Thisliftis molded around a metal plate, I, provided with holes or notchesj', which catch the heads of the fastening' nails or screws, and prevent them from working' through the lift. This elastic lift is irst secured to the leather lift IK by screws or.
nails g, which are driven `into the elastic lift till their heads strike against the metal plate. Then the partiallyiormedheelissecured tothe outer sole, or to one or more lifts of leather fastened thereto, by screws or nails l1., which are driven through holes in the lift K and in the elastic lift till their heads are caught by the metal plate. The holes in the lift K may then be plugged up, as shown, or the 'outer wearing-lifts, L, may be secured thereto without iilling` up such holes.
lt will be noticed that the metal plate I does not extend to the outer edge of the elasticlift, which enables such lift to/be made solid' at its edges.
The elastic lift H has one or more openings, t', iliade through it, which connect with the double air-chamber of the boot or shoe and directly with the interior of the boot or shoe at its heel. Sheets of rubber cloth may be placed above and below the elastic lift H, but can be dispensed with.
The shoe or boot may be provided with the removable supplementary insole m, which is grooved on its under side and is perforated; but the Ventilating devices will operate without such supplementaryinsole, and I therefore do not wish to be limited to its use.
The air-chambers described of the boot or shoe may have eitherorboth ofthe connections with the external air sho'wn in the patent already gl'anted to me and before referred to, or they may have any other suitable connections with the external air, or they can be used without any such connections, and force and exhaust the air through the open top of theboot or shoe. The peculiar elastic middle sole gives greater elasticity to the sole ot' the boot or shoe, and also produces a more complete ventilation than. the elastic middle sole, which is grooved only on one side; and the embedded metal platein the elastic lift of the heel securely holds the fastening;` nails or screws, the heads of which, but for such plate, would wear orwork through the elastic lift, and the heel would become loose or be detached.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a boot or shoe, the perforated elasticv middle sole, D, grooved or channeled on both sides, so as to form air-chambers above and beneath said middle sole, extending' the entire width of the boot or shoe, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a boot or shoe, the perforated and grooved elastic middle sole, D, having depressed edge e, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a boot or shoe, the combination, with the perforated inner sole, of the perforated elastic middle sole, D, grooved or channeled on both sides and forming; air-chalnbers bot-h above and below said middle sole, extending the entire width of the boot or shoe, substantially as described and shown. 4. In a boot or shoe, theintermedate elastic heel'li't, H, having the metal plate I elnbedded therein, and the screws g l1., for securing' the elastic lift to the adjoiningl leather lifts, subA stantially as described and shown.
5. In a boot or shoe, the intermediate elastic heel-lift, I-I, having; metal plateI and air-openings i, which are connected with the interior ofthe boot or shoe at its heel, substantially as described and shown. 1 f
6. Ini a boot orshoe, and in combination, the solid outer sole, the perforated inner sole, the perforated elastic middle sole groovcd on both sides, the heel having' intermediate elasticlift provided with air-openings, andthe embedded metal plate, constructed and arranged substantially as described and shown.
