COLLAPSIB LE BABY OR DOLL CRIB v Filed June 28, 194] 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 A itomeys Patented Jan. 26, 1943 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE OOLLAPSIBLE BABY R DOLL CRIB William L. Jago, Fremont, Ohio Application June 28, 1941, Serial No. 400,301
1 Claim.
This invention relates to cradles or cribs and an object of the invention is to provide a cradle or crib which is collapsible and which may be used to accommodate either a baby or a doll.
More particularly the object of the invention is to improve upon such cribs or cradles as are now generally used and which are collapsible so as to be readily set up for use either in the home or within an automobile body.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a collapsible crib or cradle that is characterized by simplicity of construction, combination and arrangement and number of parts, and which when folded will require but little storage space and/or effort in carrying the same about.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the cradle or crib set up for use.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is an end elevational view thereof, and
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 4--4 of Figure 1.
Referring more in detail to the drawings it will be seen that in accordance with the present invention there are provided opposed standards 5-5 which may be made of wood or other suitable material and are equipped with feet or bases 6-6.
The standards or posts 55 are connected together through the medium of a spreader bar I.
The bar I is composed of a pair of sections 8, 9 hingedly connected together at one end through the medium of a hinge Ill.
The sections 8 and 9 are hinged to the posts 5-5 through the medium of hinge straps l l-| I.
The straps II are riveted or otherwise secured as at l2 to the free ends of the sections 8 and 9 and are provided with eyes l3l3 that are accommodated within openings l4 provided in the posts or standards 5 to cooperate with hinge pins l5 secured on the standards within said openings l4.
The sections 8 and 9 of the spreader bar 8 are secured in rigid alignment through the medium of a latch plate l6 disposed at the sides of the sections 8 and 9 opposite to the hinge l0 and pivoted at one end to, for example, the section 9 as at [1.
Rising from the section 8 is a stud l8 with which the notched end I9 of the latch bar I6 is engageable, and is held in engagement with the stud through the medium of -a wing nut 20 threaded on the stud as shown.
For the spreader bar I there are provided braces 2I-2l.
The braces 2| at one end thereof are formed to straddle the sections 8 and 9 of the spreader bar 1, and said 'forked ends are respectively pivoted to the spreader bar sections 8 and 9 as at 22-22 by means of bolts and wing nuts to release the braces for folding the spreader bar.
Curved hinge straps 23--23 are riveted or otherwise secured at one end thereof to the brace bars 2| and have eye-equipped ends 24 engaging hinge pins 25 provided therefor on the posts 55 within openings l4 provided in the posts 5 adjacent the lower or base-equipped ends thereof.
The cradle basket is indicated by the reference numeral 26 and embodies a frame divided transversely into complemental half-sections 21--21 that, at opposite sides of the frame, are hingedly connected together as at 28; together with a flexible body 25' secured to the frame sections 21-21 in any suitable manner.
At opposite ends of the basket 26 there are provided handles 29-29, and hooks 30 are provided on the standards 5 adjacent the upper ends thereof to receive the handles 29 in the manner shown in the drawings for suspending the basket 26 between said standards as shown.
Also the standards 5--5 adjacent the upper ends thereof are provided with cross-arms 3| which serve as handles through the medium of which the entire structure may be bodily handled in moving the same from one location to another, as for example in placing the structure, set up for use, into an automobile or in removing the cradle or crib from the automobile without disturbing the occupant of the basket 26.
It will also be understood that the device may be constructed in various sizes depending upon whether it is to be used for practical purposes, or as a toy.
It will also be apparent that the basket 21 may be readily removed from suspended position between the standards 55; the latch plate l6 swung out of engagement with the keeper stud l8, and the entire frame structure of the device then folded into a compact unit for transportation or storage purposes. v
It is believed that the many advantages of a cradle or crib embodying the features of the present invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art without further detailed description.
While I have herein illustrated and described between, a spreader bar composed of two hingedly 0 connected sections, said standards having upper and lower openings therein, horizontal pins in the openings, hinge members pivoted on said pins in the upper openings and connecting the free ends of said sections of the spreader bar 15 with said standards, a latch plate bridging the connected ends of said sections to secure the same in a rigid position, brace members pivoted at one end thereof to the sections of said spreader bar at opposite sides of the hinge joint between said sections, and hinge members pivoted on the pins in the lower openings and connecting the free ends of said brace bars with said standards adjacent the lower ends of the latter, said hinge members resting on the edge of their respective openings to limit downward movement of the spreader bar sections and the brace members.
WILLIAM L. JAGO.
