2 Claims.
This invention relates to a novel arrangement for closing in a uniformly tight and neat manner the opening between two separate pieces of material which are to be overlapped upon one another and joined together throughout the distance of their overlap.
My closer may be used with a wide variety of materials, such as fabric, cloth, leather, silk, rayon and the like, and may be used for a wide variety, of purposes, such as slip covers for furniture and automobiles, tents, awnings, rugs, curtains, draperies, garment and other storage bags, luggage and such articles of wearing apparel as dresses, skirts, blouses, jackets, trousers, shoes and the like.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein I have shown a form of my closer which I hav found highly satisfactory under actual service conditions,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of my device as it appears when closed.
Figure 2 shows the same partly opened.
Figure 3 is an inside View of the upper member of my device.
Figure 4 is a view of the lacing tongue, removed.
Figure 5 is an inside view of the lower member of my device.
Figure 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Figure 1.
Figure '7 is a vertical section on the line 1-1 of Figure 6, and
Figure 8 is a horizontal section on the line 8-8 of Figure 1.
I have indicated at I0 and I l, respectively, the upper and lower members of my device. These may be of any suitable material, as fabric, cloth or the like, and may be the adjacent edge portions of a slip cover or the like which are to be overlapped upon one another and joined throughout the distance of their overlap in a uniformly tight and neat manner.
The members I!) and Il may have selvages l2 and [3 respectively.
Preferably, the edge of the upper member lfl opposite to its selvage I2 is provided with an inturned flap M to which is fastened in any suitable manner, as by the line of stitching I5, one longitudinal edge of a strip I 6 provided with a series of uniformly spaced horizontal button holes or narrow slits H. The other longitudinal edge of strip I6 is stitched as at l8 to the inner face of said member I0.
Similarly fastened to the inner face of the lower member II is a similar strip I9 having a matching set of button holes or narrow slits 20.
Strips l6 and I9 may be of any desired length, width and material, and their button holes or slits may be as closely or as widely spaced as desired so long as the button holes or slits of one strip register with those of the otherstrip when the members In and l I are brought together.
Referring to Figure 8, the inturned flap of the lower member I! is designated at 2!, the line of stitching which anchors one longitudinal edge of strip l9 thereto is designated at 22, and the line of stitching which anchors the other longitudinal edge of said strip to the inner face of member I! is designated at 23.
Fastened in any suitable manner, as by the line cross-stitches 25 (Figures 6 and 7) to the inner face of lower member I l near its top, but beneath the strip 59, is the upper end of a lacing tongue 25. This tongue is of any suitable material and is of a width to easily thread through registering pairs of button holes or slits of the strips it and it. (See Figures 6 and 7.)
To facilitate the threading action, the free end of tongue 25 is preferably provided with a tapered threader 26, preferably of bendable material which can be looped upon itself and reentered in the lowermost pair of button holes or slits of the contacting strips in order to lock the assembly. (See Figure 6.)
As appears from Figures 1, 2, 6 and 7 of the drawings, the opening between the members If! and H is closed in a tight, neat, and uniform manner, and there is no tendency for the parts to gap or sag.
Various modifications in materials and methods may obviously be resorted to within the spirit and scope of my invention, as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A closer for the opening between two overlapping lengths of material comprising strips with registering button holes secured to the inner faces of said lengths, a flexible lacing member substantially coextensive with said strips, said member being attached at one end thereof to one end of said strips with the other end of said member being free for successive engagement with said button holes, and a bendable threader on the free end of said lacing member for overfclding itself and reentering in the farthest pair of button holes in said strips from the point of attachment of said lacing member to lock the assembly.
2. A closer for the opening between two overlapping lengths of material comprising strips ABNER L. FREEDMAN.
