Patented May 30, 1944 SAFETY LEG PORTION FOR TROUSERS R SIMILAR- GARMENTS Thomas B. McMasters, Chicago, Ill.
Application August 25, 1942, Serial No. 456,062
1 Claim.
This invention relates to trousers, overalls, work pants and similar garments and more particularly to the leg portions of said garments and the primary object of the invention is the provision of a leg portion that will tightly fit the leg of the wearer between the foot and knee to eliminate the leg portion from catching into machinery and the like when said wearer is engaged in work in the vicinity thereof, or to eliminate the practice of tying the leg portion about the leg to prevent flapping thereof or walking thereon should the leg portion be too long for the wearer and which may be easily and quickly opened to permit the leg portion to pass freely over the foot when removing or putting on the garment.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation illustrating a safety leg portion of a garment constructed in accordance with my invention and showing the leg portion fitting tightly about a portion of a leg.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevation illustrating the leg portion open,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary diagrammatical view showing how the leg portion of the garment is cut in order to render the same when sewed and fastened to fit tightly the leg of the wearer.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 showing the edges of one of the cutouts brought together and stitched.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 5 indicates a fragmentary portion of one leg portion of a garment of the kind heretofore specified and 6 the side seams thereof. The material of the leg portion 5 from the lower end thereof for a selected distance upwardly of the leg portion is cut away on opposite sides of the seams as 7 shown at I, The edges of one of the cutout portions at one side of the leg portion 5 are brought together and stitched, as shown at 8.
A closure flap 9 is stitched to the trousers portion along one edge of the other cutout portion and for a limited distance along the adjacent edge of said latter-named cutout portion, and
upon the inner face of the trousers portion so that said flap will act as a closure when the latter-named cutout portion or the opposite edges thereof are brought in the direction of each other through the use of adjustable separable fasteners ll] causing the leg portion to tightly fit the leg of the wearer for a selected distance from the foot in the direction of the knee. This will prevent the leg portion from flapping about the leg of the wearer as the wearer walks eliminating any possibility of the leg portion catching into machinery or the like or from the wearer stepping on the leg portion should the latter to too long.
The separable fasteners II] are secured to opposite edges of the latter referred to cutout portion and will permit said cutout portion to be easily opened when desiring to place the garment on the wearer or when removing the garment from the wearer. The fasteners when unfastened allow the leg portion to open sufficiently to permit it to pass freely over the foot.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts ma be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what I claim is:
In a garment construction, a leg portion having side seams and provided with cutout portions extending along the seams from the free end of the leg portion and having the edges of one of the cutout portions brought together and stitched completing one of the seams to the free end of the leg portion and cooperating with the other cutout portion when the edges thereof are drawn toward each other in fitting the leg portion tightly to the leg of the wearer from the ankle to the calf of the leg,,separable fasteners for adjustably drawing the edges of the last named cutout portion toward each other, and a one piece flap stitched to the inner face of the leg portion along one entire edge of the last named cutout portion and for a limited distance along the other edge of said last named cutout portion in the direction of the free end of the leg portion and acting to close the latter named cutout portion when the edges thereof are secured together by said fasteners.
THOMAS B. MCMASTERS.
