Oct. 31, 1944. K. T. BUTTERY BOX OR CONTAINER Filed July 15, 1942 embodiment in boxes or containers Patented Oct. 31,
PATENT. OFFICE BOX on CONTAINER Kenneth T. Buttery, Kalamazoo, Mich assignor to Sutherland Paper Company, Mich. a. corporation of Michigan Application July s, 1942, Serial No. 451,042
Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in a box or container. g
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a box or container which is well adapted for use as a tobacco box or package and for other commodities where tin has been commonly used.
Second, to provide a box or container formed entirely of fibrous paper stock such as carton or container board which may be readily opened and at the same time effectively sealed with revenue stamps such asare commonly employed on tobacco packages, the revenue stamps being destroyed when the container is opened.
Third, to provide a structure having these advantages which is strong and rigid and maybe carried in l he pocket.
Fourth, to provide a box or container which may be formed of a single integral blank and produced in the knockdown form largely by macbine'ry and readily set up by sealing machinery of types now in quite extensive use.
Objects relating to-details and economies of the-invention will appear 'from the description to follow. The invention is defined out in the claims.-
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated. in the accompanying drawing, in which:-. r r
Fig. 1 is a front perspective view of a box or cimtain'er embodying the features of my invent on.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary front perspective view with the cover partially opened.
. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary front perspective view with the cover in reclosed position.
Fig. 4 is an 'enlarged fragmentary vertical section with the cover in partially open position.
Fig. 5 is-a transverse section of the collapsed box or container.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of the top end of the'.box in erected position but prior to the sealing of the top closure members.
Fig. 7 is a plan view of the blank with certain zones of adhesive applied thereto. f
In the accompanying drawing, I have mustrated my invention asembodied in a box or conand pointed tainer adapted as a tobacco box or container.
It will be understood that this is for purposes of illustration and that my invention is capable of of various sizes and forvarious uses.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing comprises on outer front wall I, an outer rear wall 2, and outer end Walls 3 and 4. It also comprises inner front walls 5, inner rear wall 6,;and inner end walls I and 8. These walls are arranged in alignment in'a sin- 'gle or integral blank, the several walls being 5 hingedly connected by score or flexing lines 8.
It will be noted that the inner walls are at or constitute one end of the blank while the outer walls constitute the other end' of the blank.
. The outer front and rear walls i and 2 are 10 provided with bottom closure members Ill and II respectively while the outer end walls 3 and 4 are provided with bottom closure members I! and I3 respectively. These closure members are hingedly or flexibly connected to their respective walls by scores 14. n
The outer front and rearwalls I and 2 are provided with top end or closure members l5 and I6 respectively while the outer end walls 3 and 4 are provided with top end closure members I! 2 and I8 respectively. These top closure members are hingedly or bendably connected to their respective The inner end wall 1 is provided with a bottom closure flap or member i9 bendably connected thereto bythe score M. It is provided with a top flap 20 connected thereto by theseverance line 2i sothat this-top flap may be readily pulled oil when the container is opened as will be here- 3 after described. v L .The blank is designed to be folded into the form shown-in Fig. 5 by machinery and suitable adhesive applied thereto, a strip of adhesive being 7 shown at 22 along the outer end wall 3 and a strip of adhesive 23 being'provided on the inner- It Will beunderside of the outer rear wall. stood, however, that the adhesive could be applied to the opposed lapping portions.
With adhesive applied as illustrated, the inner 40 wall portion of the blank is folded along the score line connecting the inner end'wall 8 to the inner front wall 5 and th parts thus folded are 7 again folded along the score line 9 connecting the inner .wall' 1 to the] rear wall 2. This brings the outer side of the rear inner wall into opposed relation to the inner side of the outer rear wall and a seal is effected along the zone 23'to which adhesive has been applied. The blank is then folded along the score line connecting the front outer wall with th ,outer end wall 4 which-brings the outer .end wall 3 intosuperimposed relation to the outer side of j walls by scores or bending connections.
effective on surfaces coated with printer's ink.
'I have not illustrated the sealing of the top and bottom end flaps or closure members but it will be understood that they ar folded into overlapping relation and the overlapping parts secured together by suitable adhesive except for the part as described.
The outer front wall I is provided with 'a line of severance 26 arranged to provide a central In this embodiment, the line of severance is a complete severing slit in the outer 'being slit to provide a closure tongue and the front wall. The outer end walls have diagonally disposed fracturing lines of severance or zones 26 extending from the ends of the lines of severance 24 of the outer front wall to the flexing or hinge connection [4 for the top closure flap ,IB of the rear outer wall so that when these lines of severance 26 are broken, a cover is provided,
hinging on the score line H and closable over the upper ends of the inner front and end walls as shown in the drawing.
The front inner wall has a slit 21 therein adapted to receive the tongue and frictionally retain the same when the cover is reclosed. This permits repeated opening and closing of the container and a container which opens effectively for dispensing of the contents.
It is contemplated that this container shall be filled before the top closure flaps are sealed and when opened the top flap 20 may be pulled off if desired, and it has been removed in Fig. 2.
With the parts thus arranged, I provide a container or box of fibrous container stock which is well adapted for use as a substitute for metal containers. It is strong and rigid and may be repeatedly handled should occasion require.
It will be understood that I have shown my improvements as embodied in a relatively flat package or container designed to be carried in the pocket and I have used the terms front, rear and end as relative terms and not in regard to dimensions.
I do not deem it necessary to illustrate other embodiments or adaptations of my invention as it is believed that it will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which my invention relates.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;
1. A box or container comprising outer front, rear and end walls and inner front, rear and end walls, said several walls being aligned and hingedly connected in an integral blank, the walls including the outer front, rear and end walls and also the inner end wall positioned in the blank adjacentthe outer rearwall all having top and bottom closure members hingedly connected thereto, the inner front, rear and end walls being at one end of the blank, the outer front, rear and end walls being at the other end of the blank, the outer side of the inner rear wall being adhesively secured to the inner side of the outer rear wall and the outer end wall at members, the outer front wall having a severance zone extending thereacross substantially below its upper edge, the outer end walls having fracturing zones extending from the ends of said inner front wall having a slit therein adapted to receive said tongue when the cover is in closed position, the closure member at the upper end of the inner end wall being readily severable when the cover is opened. 7
