.4 TTOQNE) Patented Oct. 31, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ORNAMENT HOLDER Max Kaplan, Brooklyn, Y. 7 Application December 3, 1941, Serial No. 421,445
I Claims. (01. 24-5) This invention relates generally to ornament holders. More particularly, my invention relates to an improved construction for ornament holders of the barrette type adapted to be fastened to the hair or to the garment of the user for the purpose of supporting artificial flowers or other suitable ornaments.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide an ornament holder of the class described which shall be characterized by its simplicity of construction. and in which the ornaments may be very quickly and easily attached or detached as desired.
Another object of my invention is to provide an ornament holder of the class described which is suitably adapted for molding from a plastic or other moldable substance, as well as being stamped from metallic material, which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and which at the same time shall constitute a general im; provement in the art.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out. The accompanying drawing illustrates an embodiment of the invention, in which, ,Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of an ornament holderconstructed in accordance with my invention and illustrating the manner of its use;
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the Fig. 1 form of myinvention; I
Fig. 4 is an elevational view similar to Fig 1 but partly in section and illustrating a modified form of my invention;
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal view, partly in section,
I of another modified form of my invention; and
Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view taken substantially on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
In the type of ornament holders heretofore manufactured for. use in supporting artificial flowers and the like, many'disadvantageswere inherent in the constructions employed. For. example, it was found that it was extremely diflicult to attach the artificial flowers to the holder. The method of attachment heretofore generally consisted of foldable tabs or pieces of wires or some other movable parts which were twisted about the flower and the holder. This resulted in the loosening and the falling off of flowers from the hair or garment much to the annoyance of the user.
In accordance with my invention, I have proscribed disadvantages havebeen overcome, and in which an ornament 'such as for example, a flower, may be very quickly and easily attached to the holder, by merely making use of the stem of the flower itself, Without additional fastening members.
. Referring now' in detail to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the, drawing, I have shown an embodiment of my invention in the form of a barrette type of ornament holder comprising a body II) which may be made of any suitable moldable substance such 7 as the cellulose acetate plastics or other similar materials now in general use. The said body Ill may be curved or bowed in the direction of its length in the customary manner of barrette type pins. Attached to or integral with the body I0 is a hinge lug II and a fastening lug I2, the said lugs II and I2 projecting from the bottom surface !0a of the body Ill. Hingedly attached to the lug II is a clamping tongue I4 of any well known construction and adapted to resiliently engage the lug I2 in any suitable manner wellknown to the art. If desired any standardtype of pin with safety catch may be employed instead of the clamping tongue. Projectin from the bottom surface Illa there may also be provided a plurality of teeth I5 designed to facilitate the gripping of the holder in the hair or in attachment with a garment. A through opening I6, running lengthwise of the body I0, is provided as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. Communicating with the opening I6 and with the top Wall IOb of the body I0 is a second opening I7 angularly disposed with respect to the opening I6. Instead of the 'single longitudinal opening I6 two separate openings may be used on opposite sides of the opening IT and commu- .to maintain the flower F captively attached to the holder.
In Fig. 1, I have shown an additional ornament in the form of a leaf L which may also be inserted in either end of opening I6. It is noted that the stem 20 if desired, may be inserted through either end of the opening I6 and that the leaf L may be inserted through the opening I1. It is further noted that there are no bendable,
tabs which tend to break, and no additional wires are necessary outside of the stem of the flower or leaf itself. ment may be quickly attached or detached without any special skill or tools required on the part of the user.
In Fig. 4 of the drawing, I have shown a modified form of my invention, in which the body 30 of the holder may be formed with a single opening 3| which may be of generally U-shape and provided with portions 3m and SH) which communicate with the top wall 30a of the body 30.
It is understood that the bodies of the holder or 30 must be made of suificient thickness to permit the formation and arrangement of the openings shown in the drawing or any other desired arrangement of openings for the purposes above described.
In Figs. 5 and 6 I have shown another modified form of my invention in which the body 40 of the ornament holder comprises a top wall 40a and a pair of depending side walls 401) integral therewith. The walls 401) are spaced from each other to provide a channel C therebetween. Openings 4!, 42 and 43 are provided in the top Wall 4011 communicating directly with the channel C. Any suitable lugs 44 and 45 are provided for cooperation with a tongue 46 for attachment to the hair or garment of the user. In this form of invention the stem of the flower F or leaf L may be inserted through any of the openings 4!, 42 or 43 and angularly bent so as to lie within the channel C. It is thus seen that the angular bending of the stem will hold the ornament in attachment with the holder and at the same time will conceal the stem from view within the channel C. While in the drawing, I have shown three openings in the wall of the body 40 it is understood that any number of such openings may be provided communicating directly with the channel C.
If desired, the bottom free edges of the walls 4% may be serrated to provide teeth 50 to facilitate the gripping attachment of the ornament to the hair or garment and at the same time these teeth may be used to facilitate the frictional engagement of the stem of the ornament. In such cases when the body is made of metallic material any selected teeth 5!], either singly or in opposed pairs may be bent inwardly to aid in holding the stem captive within the channel and concealed from view.
There may also be added, if desired, a bottom wall member 60 (see Fig. 6) which may comprise a relatively thin longitudinal strip of paper or metal bowed transversely of its length, as shown, to be. resiliently held in position. The member 60 may also be made integral with th body 40. In the type of construction just explained it is noted that when the stem of the flower or leaf Therefore it is seen that the ornais inserted in any one of the openings 4!, 42 or 43, it will be bent and received within the passageway formed between the top wall 42 and the member 60.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have herein described the construction, operation and usefulness of my invention, together with structures which I now consider to represent the best embodiments thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the constructions shown are only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means. Also, while it is designed to use various features and elements in the combinations and relations described, some of these may be altered and others omitted without interfering with the more general results outlined and my invention extends to such use.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a barrette type ornament holder having a body portion comprising a top wall bowed or curved in the direction of its length and a hollow area within said body portion, that improvement which comprises providing an opening in the top wall of said body portion for receiving and holding therein a stem of a flower or similar ornament, said opening communicating directly with said hollow area whereby the said stem will be hidden from view when the barrette is worn.
2. In a barrette type of ornament holder having a solid body portion made of plastic material and having a top wall surface thereof bowed or curved in the direction of its length, that improvement which-comprises providing a longitudinal bore in said body portion communicating at opposite ends thereof with the said top wall surface of said body and a transverse bore in said body communicating with said longitudinal bore and with the said top wall surface of said body, said bores being adapted to frictionally receive stems of flowers or similar ornaments therein for attachment to said holder.
3. An ornament holder according to claim 1 in which said body portion comprises said curved top wall and a pair of side walls depending therefrom, said side walls being spaced from each other to form said hollow area or channel therebetween.
4. An ornament holder according to claim 1 in which said body portion comprises said curved top wall and a pair of side walls depending therefrom, said side walls being spaced from each other to form said hollow area or channel therebetween, a portion of the said stem being received within said channel, portions adjacent the free edges of said side walls being adapted to be bent inwardly to hold the stem portion of the ornament received within the channel, captive therein.
5. An ornament holder of the class described comprising a one-piece solid body havin a top surface, a longitudinal bore and a transverse bore in said body, said transverse bore communicating directly with said longitudinal bore and with said top surface, so that the stem of a flower passed through said transverse bore will enter said longitudinal bore and be frictionally held thereby.
