4 Claims. 01. 206 154) I This invention relateslto new and useful irn provernents in means for protecting the bristles of hair brushes and the like and hasfor its primary object to provide a protectivecover of simple 1 construction enclosing only the bristle body of the brush.
Another object of the invention is to provide a] protective cover of this character made from a l single blank of transparent materiarto enable the purchaser to observe the bristle construction and arrangement without requiring removal of l the cover, thereby protectingthe bristle body from 1 contamination due to handling, a

*In the drawing, referring more particularly to Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, {0 represents generally a hair brush or the like including a suitably shaped brush back H terminating at-one end ina handle J portion'lfl. The brush is provided with the usual .bris'tle body l3- consisting of a plurality of bristles} 1 arranged in bunches or tufts 14 with the bristles the bristles in each bunch to diverge outwardly.
from the brush back with the result thatthe b-ristlebody has agreater'area at its free end than at the brush back to which it is secured,
and it is a further object of the invention to provide an open-mouth cover conformingin shape substantially to that of the bristle body with the closed end of the cover of greater area/than the open mouth thereof and with the sidewalls fiara i'ng outwardly from the open mouth whereby when inplace on the bristle body, the sides ofthe cover form a dovetailed joint.
and the adjacent inclined sidesofthe bristle body A still further object of the-inventionis to pro vide an open-mouth cover for the bristle body' of hair brushes and the like wherein the open mouth of the cover is reduced relative to the area of the closed bottom of the cover rwherebythe wardly from the face of the brush.-

thereby eliminating the necessity of a container for the brush. The cover conforms in shape sub-\ 'stantially to that of the bristlebody I3, thatis,
with the sides of the cover diverging outwardly from the open mouth thereof so; that the cover accompanying drawing. and more particularly pointed out in the appendedclaims." i v Referring to: the drawing in which numerals of cordance with the presentinvention; 1 n 1 b ver Fig. 21s a detail perspective viewof the c perse; l l v i a a is held in place by. the bristle body la much in the :same manner asthe tenons'of a dovetailed joint. n n n i Asshown in ,ig. 5, the cover 1-5 15 made from a: single blank of transparent material suitably shaped to provide atcentral wall area [6 corresponding substantially to thenarea of the free end of the bristle body It and provide longitudinally extending side walls I! and I8 on opposite sides, respectively, of the central area Hi when folded along score lines 19 and 20. The side wall it terminates at itsoppo'site ends in outwardly 7 extending tabs 2l1and: 22 projecting beyondthe edges of the central area is and adapted to be .to diverge outwardly ,toward their free ends.
folded inwardly along score lines 23 and 24, respectively. Similarly, the side wall I8 also terminates at its opposite ends inthe outwardly are similarly secured together in overlapping relationship to provide the other transverse end wall of the cover, for example, wall B shown in Fig. 1.- The opposite longitudinal extremities of the central wall area I6 'project slightly beyond the corresponding edges of the bristle body to be protected to form narrow edge portions 29 and St adapted to be folded along score lines 3| and 32, respectively, to overlie a portion of the adjacent transverse end walls A and B of the cover, as clearly shown' in Figs. 1, 2 and 4 and be ccmented or otherwise suitably secured to said walls to seal the opposite longitudinal extremities of the bottom wall It of the cover.
1 The cover I5 may be assembled from the blank shown in Fig. 5 while in place on the bristle body I3, or such cover may first be assembled and substantially to the shape of the bristle body and which, because of the diverging faces presented by the outer rows of tufts and the corresponding diverging side walls of the cover providing a dovetail joint between the cover and bristle body, is held in place on the bristle body without requiring auxiliary attaching means and without which are compressed by the reduced mouthof the cover during this removal operation.
While I have shown and'described theinvention in connection with an oblong bristle body,
36 and having suitably shaped cutout recesses 37' 1 and 38, respectively. These jaws are movable towards and away from each other on their pivot 36 and are made relatively thin so that when moved toward oneanother, only that part of the tufts I4 adjacent the brush back I I will be engaged between the recesses 31 and 38, the gathering and compression of the tufts at this point correspondingly compressing the free end of the bristle body I3 and enabling the'same to enter the mouth of the cover I5, after which the jaws are moved away from one another and the bristle body is restored to its original form due to the cover I5a conforming in shape substantially to that of'the bristle body I3a encloses the latter to protect the same from dust and contamination. However, as the opposite edges of the bristle body I3a diverge only slightly outwardly, in order to prevent the cover from becoming dislodged from the bristle body, the side walls I'Ia and Illa of the cover terminate at their free ends in rolledover portions forming inwardly extending beads 4!] and Ill, respectively, reducing the open mouth Ma adjacent the brush back I Ia.
' of the cover, and engaging the outer rows of tufts 1 obviously, the same is equally applicable to brushes having round, ova; orany other shape bristle body, the cover in each instance conform-- ing to the shape of the bristle body and having sidewalls which converge toward the reduced open mouth of the cover to form with the corresponding diverging sides of the bristle body a dovetailed joint to hold the cover in position on the brush.
a From the foregoing it is believed that the construction and advantages of my invention may be readily understood by those skilled in the art without further description, it being borne in mind that numerous changesmay'be made in the details disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention as set out in the following claims.
What I claim is 1. A protective cover for the bristle body of a hair brush or the like comprising a single blank suitably shaped to provide a central wall area 1 corresponding substantially to the area at the freeend of the bristle body intended-to be covered, longitudinally extending portions on opposite sides, respectively, vof said central wall area adapted to be folded torform converging side walls terminating in an open mouth of reduced area relative to said central wall area, separate outwardly extending tabs at the opposite ends, respectively, of each of said longitudinally extending portions projecting beyond the adjacent longitudinal extremities of said central wall area and adapted to be folded inwardly and when sofolded, the tabs at the opposite ends of one of said longie tudinally extending portions terminating at their free ends. in overlapping relation to the corresponding tabs of the other of said longitudinally extending portions and being secured together to provide transverse end walls adjacent the opposite longitudinal extremities, respectively, of the central Wall area in inwardly spaced relation to said extremities, whereby said central wall area projects at its opposite ends beyond said transverse end walls, said projecting ends of the central wall area adapted to be folded over said transverse end walls and secured thereto to form a seal between said central wall area and said transverse end walls, said cover embracing the bristle body and held only by the coaction of bristles upon the cover.
2. In combination with a, brush having a brush back and a bristle body substantially Ian-shaped in cross section and secured at its reduced end to the said brush back; a protective cover of transparent material for said bristle body conforming in shape and size substantially to said bristle body and including a bottom wall extending across theenlarged free end of said bristle body, and converg ing side walls extending angularly from said bottom wall and terminating in a reduced open mouth embracing the bristle body immediately adjacent the brush back, and engaging the base of the bristles said converging side walls coopcrating with the diverging sides of said bristle body to form a dovetailed joint between said cover and bristle bodyto maintain the cover in place, by the inherent resiliency of the cover acting upon the base of the bristles.
3. In combination with a brush having a brush back and a bristle body secured at one end to said brush back and flaring outwardly towards its free end; a protective cover of flexible transparent material for said bristle body including a bottom wall corresponding to the enlarged free end of said bristle body, converging side walls extending ang-ularly from said bottom wall and terminating in a reduced open mouth adjacent said brush back, the edges of said sidewalls contacting with the bristles immediately at the brush back, and an inwardly rolled-over bead formed on each of said converging side walls at said reducedopen mouth for engagement with the outer edge of said bristle body adjacent said brush back to maintain the cover in place, by its own inherent resiliency.
tom wall and terminating in a reduced open.
mouth adjacent said brush back, the open mouth edges of said side walls contacting with the bristles immediately at the brush back, the, area of the open mouth of the cover being substantially equal to the area of the secured end of the bristle body, the engagement of said edges of the cover with the outer edge of .said bristle body adjacent said brush back maintaining the cover in place,
by the inherent resiliency of said sidewalls.
