Description

Patented Jan. 2, 1945 GARMENT "Theodore 'AI Clifford, Chicaga; Ill.,4 assigner` of two-fifths to Elizabeth A. Grady, Chicago, Ill..v
Appliationrebmary 13, 1941, serial No'. 378,717
(c1. z vo) 8 Claims.
My invention relates particularly to an Vinfant garment "and has for objects the provision of a novel,- simple and comfortable garment ai'ording quick and convenient dressingand undressing, and the provision of novel effective fastening devices therefor which do not involvel rigid fasteners permanently attached to thel garment with consequent conveniencein washing, ironing and upkeep. Another object of the invention resides inthe provision of a diaper like nether garment which does not require folding` in installation and which involves a conveniently replaceable inner filler or diaper pad with obvious advantage Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a separate jacket in combination with a nether garment and Suspenders thereof together with novel and `desirable securing means operative between the jacket and Suspenders, the invention contemplatingthe use of the garment assembly for a play or sun suit.
With these objects in View, my invention consists in certain features of novelty in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts byv which the above objects and certain other'objects hereinafter appearing are attained, all as hereinafter fully described'with reference 'to' the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, and more particularly pointed out in the accompanying claims. y In the said-drawing: y
Figure 1 is an illustration of an infant wearing the nether garment of my invention;4 Figure 2 is a front elevation of the jacket yinvolved in my invention;
Figure 3 is a front view of the jacket fastening device of my invention; i y
Figure '4 is a lface View of the nether garment of my invention;
Figure 5 is a front elevation of one 'of the garment fastening devices of my invention; i
Figure 6 is a perspective view-ol one of the re'- placeablel nether garment fillers or padsof m'y invention; f Figure 7 isa face View of the'suspend'ers involved in my invention;
Figure 8 is an enlarged partial sectional view substantially on the line 8 8'of Figure l; Y
Figure 9 is a partial face view of another form of the nether garment of my invention; and
Figure 10 is a face view of another forml of the Suspenders involved in my invention.
Referring to the drawing, l designates a nether garment of generally" flat form having Jthe-porand 4 thereof by reason of the rside edges thereof being' -oppositely concave substantially throughout their extent as designated at 2. See Figures 1 and 4. The end 4 is of greater longitudinal extent than the end 3vby reason vof it 'being provided with terminal belt like extensions 4', and the-end 3 has a longitudinal extent approximating the leg center distance of the wearer as best shown in Figure l and is provided with two laterallyl spaced button holes 5 and the end 4 is provided with two laterally spaced button holes 6 arranged' respectively at the belt like extensions 4" adjacent the sides of the garment.
The ends 3'and'4 of the garment l are adapted to be arranged in belt forming overlapping relation to encircle the waist of the wearer with the narrower end 3 at the front of the wearer and with the narrow intermediate portion 2 engaged through the crotch of the wearer to form a pants or"diaper like garment, the wider end portion 4 embracing the major portion of the waist of the wearer and the belt like extensions 4' being disposedat the front of the wearer in overlapping relation with-the terminal portions of the end 3, as shownin Figure 1. A button fasteningdevice consisting of strip 1, preferably of elastic tape, has two buttons 8 secured thereon in spaced relation longitudinallythereof, see Figure 5, and the buttons 8 are detachably engaged respectively through registering pairs of the button holes 5 and 6 with the strip l on the interior of thegarment to secure the ends of the garment in belt forming overlapping relation on the body. of the wearer, as shown in Figure l.
By reason of the sides of the garment I beingv oppositely concave substantially throughout their extent, the end 4 embracing the major portion of the waist of the wearer and the end 3 being of alongitudinal extent approximating the leg center distance of the wearer, bulkiness of the garment is practically eliminated and the leg holes formed by the garment are soarranged that the upper portions ofthe leg holes are disposedat the groins of the wearer with the results that comfort is promotedand that the garment does not interfere with the bending of` the legs of the wearer. Y
A replaceable filler or diaper pad 9, see Figure 6, of 'generally at form, has a width corresponding with that of the intermediate portion 2 of the garment l, and is provided at each end with two laterally spaced button holes Il .arranged respectively adjacent the sides thereof. The iiller 971s arranged within'the garment I and is secured 'at 'thefrontof the-garment and with the'en'd' 3 by means of the buttons 8 of the strip 1 engaging through button holes I I of the filler and then through the button holes 5 and 6 of the garment, whereby both the ends of the garment; are secured in belt forming overlapping relation and the one end of the filler is secured with the overlapping portions by the buttons 8 on the strip 1. See Figure 8.
The intermediate portion of the end 4 of the garment I is provided lwith two laterally spaced button holes I2 arranged between the button holes 6 and the other end of the ller is secured with the intermediate portion of the end 4 or the Y back of the garment by means of a duplicate of the button fastening device of Figure 5, consisting of the strip 'I and the buttons 8, the buttons being engaged outwardly through the buttonV holes I I of the corresponding end of the ller and the button holes I2 of the garment.
The ller extends from the button fastening devices oppositely with respect to the garment and is folded, as designated at I3, over the strips 'I forming enlargements of the fastening devices opposing the enlargements formed by the buttons 8l into overlying engagement with the garment so that the strips do not engage against the skin of the wearer. See Figures G and 8.
The end 4 of the garment I is preferably pro vided with additional button holes I4 adjacent the button holes 6, which may be used selectively with the button holes 6 for the purpose of adjusting the belt size of the garment. See Figure 4. Fastening means is provided frdetachably securing the intermediate portions of the sides of the garment to form leg openings and consist of tapes I5 secured at spaced points along the intermediate portions of the sides of the garment and which are tied together when the garment is applied. See also Figure 1.
Strap Suspenders I6, engageable over the wearers shoulders, are provided for the garment which are of usual form, and they are provided with terminal button holes 20 engageable over the buttons 8 of the fastening devices at the front and back of the garment.` See Figures l and 7.
A divided front jacket I1 lis provided with vertically spaced button holes I8 extending along the opposing edges of the jacket front parts and most of which are disposed above the nether garment I. See Figure 2. A securing device, see Figure 3, consists of cross strips I9 extendable across between the front stretches of the Suspenders above the garment I and provided with terminal buttons 2| engageable in button holes 22 through the Suspenders for detachably securing the cross strips thereto and a vertical strip 23 extending between and secured to the cross strips intermediately thereof and provided with buttons 24 vertically spaced therealong and most of which are disposed above the garment I. When this securing device is attached to the Suspenders, the buttons 24 are engageable through the button holes I8 of the jacket to close the j acket.
Figure 9 illustrates a modified garment 25 in which pairs of tape slots 26 are substituted for the button holes of Figure 4, and Figure illustrates Suspenders 21 for use with the garment of Figure 9 and which are provided with .terminal tie tapes 28 for cooperation with the tapeslots 26.
While I have thus described my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the precise details described, as changes may be readily -made without departing from the spirit of my invention, but Vhaving thusdescribed my invention, I claim as `'n.5
