Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DARWIN E. GOODELL, OF GERMANO, OHIO.
MINERAL PAINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,885, dated January 25, 1881.
Application filed April 2'7, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DARWIN E. GoonELL, of Germano, in the county of Harrison and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mineral Paint; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention consists in a mineral powder made from a streak, band, or stratum of mineral found in coal-banks, said band or stratum being commonly known among coal-miners by the name of soot or soot-band, and mixed or combined with linseed-oil, lacquer, or varnish, as hereinafter explained.
This mineral substance called soot or soot-band has been found by analysis to consist of coaly matter, about one third, and sand and pyrites about two-thirds-or, in one thousand parts, carbon and coal, three hundred parts; residue after ignition, seven hundred parts. This residue contained sesquioxide of iron With blackish crust, which was magnetic and silicious, and did not effervesce with hydrochloric acid, but yielded H 8. The mineral is found-in the coal-fields in Harrison county, in the eastern part of the State of Ohio.
The mineral band is first prepared by being subjected to a sufficient degree of heat to remove from it all the sulphur, gas, and oil which may be held by it, after which it is reduced, as
near as possible, to an impalpable powder by any suitable means. This powder is then When it is desired to use the paint, turpentine or benzine is added in sufiicient quantity to reduce the consistency to a degree which will flow readily from the brush. The turpentine or benzine performs the same functions in this as in ordinary paints-namely, as a drier and to thin the paint for the brush.
This paint, when dry, is very hard and durable, and is especially adapted for use on surfaces exposed to the sun and weather. The action of the suns rays renders it harder, and ordinary dampness has no effect upon it. It makes a stone-like enamel coating over the surface to which it is applied, and it is susceptible of a very fine polish when properly rubbed down; It is well adapted for indoor surfaces where a black or dark color is desired.
The powder and oil, lacquer, or varnish may be taken in different proportions from that stated hereinbefore; but I have realized the best results when the ingredients are taken in about the relative quantities stated.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A mineral paint composed of a powder made from the described substance known as soot or soot-baud, found in strata in coal-banks, mixed with linseed-oil or other suitable vehicle, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DARWIN E. GOODELL.
