UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
oHAnLEs B. RICE, OF OLAREMONT, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
WIRE COVER FOR ROLLS OF PAPER-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,047, dated January 25, 1881. Application filed December 22, 1880. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHARLEs B. Bron, of Olaremont, in the county of Sullivan and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Wire Cover for Rolls of Paper-Machines; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full' and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Heretofore, wherever rolls or cylinders were made with surfaces or covers of wire-cloth, these surfaces or covers were made by taking wire-cloth, and, after cutting it of the desired length, bringing .the edges together and sewin g or fastening them in different ways. The objections to this method are several. As generally done, when used in the manufacture of paper, the joint or seam-leaves a mark on the paper whenever it comes in contact with the pulp, andinevery case the joint or seam breaks long before the rest of the wire is destroyed; moreover, the cost of making the joint or seam is great.
My invention does away altogether with this scam; and it consists. in a cylindrical wovenwire roll, all in one piece when completed.
In order that those skilled in this art may know how to make my roll, I proceed to describe the same, having reference to the drawings making a part. of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of my wire roll, and Fig. 2 an end view of the same and of an expansible drum. I
1n Fig. 1 the wire cylinder is designated by the letter A. This cylinder is woven of wire in a proper circular loom, which is no part of the invention described in this application, of a length sufficient for several rolls, upon a proper expansible drum, B, and after being thus woven is a cylindrical wire-cloth tube of the proper diameter, which can be removed from the drum by decreasing the diameter thereof, and from this tube, thus removed, the length required for each roll can be conven iently cut off.
Ifthe wire employed is of a sufficient coarseness, then the roll requires no support, except at the ends, where suitable heads, 0, may be inserted and properly secured, which heads also support the pintles D; or, instead of separate pintles, a suitable rod running through the roll may be used.
In cases where a finer wire is used it may be Woven directly around a proper roll.
I am aware that Woven or knit wire has been employed in the construction of a variety of tubes for the conveyance of water, air, and gases, and therefore do not claim the use of woven wire, broadly, for all sorts of tubes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and of my own invention is A seamless Woven Wire paper -roll constructed substantially as described and shown.
This specification signed and witnessed this 22d day of January, 1880.
