Description
June 26, 1945. "r. B. FARRELL UR'INARY APPLIANCE Filed April 10, 1945 INVENTOR. THOMHJ B. FARRELL.
Patented June 26, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE URINARY APPLIANCE Thomas B. Farrell, Pittsburgh, Pa.
Application April 10, 1943, Serial No. 482,549
2 Claims.
Myinvention relates to urinary appliances, and more particularly to those for wear by men and boys with urinary weaknesses or who are confined to bed.
One object of my invention is to provide a urinal which will be held in place more snugly, and with consequent less danger ofleakage, than is the case with various forms of urinals heretofore employed.
Another object of my invention is to provide a structure which can readily be used by a person when walking and which can also readily be used by a person confined to his bed.
Still another object is to provide a structure of the character'referred to, which has the necessary rigid or semi-rigid parts to provide the required stability and support against collapse and for convenient connection to a drain tube, and which will nevertheless be worn without undue distortion of the clothing and which will not interfere with body movements of the wearer.
As shown in the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is a side view of the device as applied to a person; Fig. 2 is a front-view, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the device, on a greatly enlarged scale, and Fig. 4 is a front view of the base element.
The urinal is held in place on the wearers body by a belt 6 which carries a pair of front straps 1 and a pair of crotch straps 8, which will be of rubber or other elastic material, so that the base member will be held against the body with suflicient force to prevent leakage of urine, ven when the person is lying down or is sitting.
The base member I is of tubular form any may suitably be two inches in length and of somewhat smaller internal diameter, depending upon the size of the person for whom it is made. It may be of hard or semi-hard rubber, and is provided with a collar-like flange I I that has pairs of studs 12 and I3 for connection to the straps l and 8 respectively. A washer or bushing M of sponge rubber or other soft material is provided, which will lie between the strap and the users body, though this member is not essential.
A tube l5 of tough, flexible rubber and which may suitably be of six to eight inches in length, is connected to the base In by stretching it over the outer end thereof, so that it can readily be replaced when worn out. At its outer end, the tube is stretched around or cemented or vulcanized to an end member or cap I6 which may suitably be of semi-hard or hard rubber and is of circular contour. A nipple or short pipe I! of non-corrosive material has tight fit with the A member I6 and is provided with a stop cock or valve I8 which will be closed to confine urine errands. At such time the involuntarydischarge of urine is usually of small quantity and the tube IE will be sufficient storage space for considerable periods of time.
For night time use, or which the person is confined to bed, -I provide a drain pipe or flexible hose 20 which will lead to a receptacle on the floor of the bedroom. This hose is connected to the threaded outer end of the pipe I! by a pipe coupling 2| which can'readily be connected and disconnected. The valve l8 will, of course, be open when the hose is in use. While the tube I5 is soft and pliable and can readily be caused to lie against a leg of the wearer, the rigidity of the members l0 and I6 and the Weight of th latter will support it against collapsing to an excessive degree. It is further to be noted that not only will the urine be prevented from leaking out at the inner end of the base tube H], but the scrotum will be disposed below the tube l0 and therefore out of contact with the urine.
I claim as my invention:
1. A urinary appliance comprising a tubular base member of circular form and of substantially rigid material, and being of a diameter to loosely received the male urine-discharging organ,
a flange on the exterior surface of the base member, at a plane spaced such distance outwardly from the inner end of the base member that the flange normally does not fit against the wearers body, means on the flange for connecting belt straps thereto, across the periphery of the flange, means on the lower portion of the flange for connecting crotch straps thereto, whereby the inner end of the tube may be held in liquid-sealing engagement with the wearers body, and a urinereceiving receptacle at the outer end of the base member, the flange being of substantially greater diameter than the base member.
2. A urinary appliance comprising a tubular base member of circular form and of substantially rigid material, and being of a diameter to loosely receive the male urine-dischargin organ, a flange on the exterior surface of th base member, at a plane spaced outwardly from the inner end of the base member, a flexible disc of greater diameter than the flange, encircling the base member at the r ar side of the flange and spaced outwardly from the inner end of thebase member such distance that it serves no liquid-sealing function, means on the flange for connecting belt straps thereto, across the periphery of the flange, means on the lower portion of the flange for connecting crotch straps thereto, whereby the inner end of the tube may be held in liquid-sealing engagement with the wearers body, and a urinereceiving receptacle at the outer end of the base member, the flange being of substantially greater diameter than the base member.
