This invention relates to toe mitts, the purpose being to provide a knitted element of the general form of the toe of a stocking and fitting over the toes of the wearer either inside or outside of the stocking providing a means for preventing wear of the stocking toe. The feature of the invention resides in the structure of the toe mitt providing a means tending to retain the same in position on the foot of the user.

In ladies shoes of the present day, an opening is provided in the shoe at the toe which subjects the stocking at this point to considerable wear and my improved toe mitt, if worn on the outside of the stocking, would prevent such .wear on the foot of the stocking proper. Likewise, when worn inside the stocking, the toe nails do not directly engage the stocking toe and thus in either position in which my improved toe mitt may he used, it serves the purpose of reducing the wear of the stocking:

It is also an object and feature of the invention to provide anew and unique form of toe mitt which is very simple and inexpensive in character and self retainable in position. 1

These and othe objects and features of the invention are hereinafter more fully described and claimed and the preferred form of construction of a toe mitt embodying my invention is shown in the accompanying drawing in which- Fig. 1 isa perspective view showing the mitt as applied to the foot of the user.

Fig. 2 is a plan view of the bottom of the foot showing the manner in which the mitt at the opening tends to draw into the space between the ball of the toe and the bottom of the foot.

Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the mitt on the top of the foot.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the mitt.

In its preferred construction, the device is usually knitted by what is known as a chain stitch to a shape usual with a. stocking toe. The body I of the device is preferably formed of lisle threads and to the open base of this body portion is applied a band 2 of silk more closely knitted than the lisle body which tends to cause the band to contract. As shown in Fig. 2, the band 2 on the underside lies between the ball of the toes and the adjacent portion ofthe bottom of the foot and, due to its tendency to contract, tends to fit into the space between the ball of the toes and adjacent edge of the ball of the'foot. The band across the top is ,preferably'just at the base of the toes as indicated. The invention, however, is not confined to such manner or arrangement of the strands but is the preferable arrangement.

The manner in which the band 2 tends to contract is indicated in Fig. 4 wherein it is to be seen that the free edge of the portion 2 is of less peripheral dimension than the base 1 thereof attached to the edge of the body I at its open end, and it is this feature of construction that tends to cause the band to draw into the space between the ball of the toes and the adjacent portion of the ball of the foot and thus in use does not tend to roll up under the toes but, on the contrary, to be self retaining in position.

My improved toe mitt provides for a longer life of the stocking in that it protects the stocking when worn either inside oroutside the same and it may be knit in various colors corresponding to the color of the stocking with which it is to be used. Also the body of the mitt may be formed of woolen threads for the purpose of warmth when used in cold weather. In any event, whatever the character of the threads and manner of weaving oi the body of the mitt, the band 2 should be of a character, or so knitted, as by means of a finer mesh, tending to cause the said band to contract to less peripheral dimension at its free edge than the peripheral dimension of the open end of the body of the device attached to the adjacent edge of the band.

It is believed evident from the ioregoing description that the various features and objects of the invention are attained by the structure and arrangement of the parts thereof and that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.

Having thus briefly described my invention, its utility and character of construction, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

A toe mitt comprising a knitted element of a length to terminate at the open end and under side approximately at the base of the toes of the user, a knitted silk edge portion at the open end of the mitt of a narrow width to permit the under side of the same to lie in the space between the ball of the toes and the ball of the foot, said edge portion being so knitted as to tend to contract at its outer edge thereby tending toprevent displace- -ment or the mitt whether worn within the stocking or on the exterior thereof.
