Description

June 25, 1946. A GARSH ALL-.IN-ONE WINDOW SASH Filed June 18, 1945 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 nventor a a -J iw:
WW 0 W W5 e Z m v a a 7 2 5 lllmlilll Patented June 25, 1946 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ALL-IN-ONE WINDOW SASH Alex Garsh, Bronx, N. Y.
Application June 18, 1943, Serial No. 491,351
1 Claim. 1
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in windows of the type comprising sashes slidable vertically in a frame, and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, novel means for securing said sashes in adjusted position without the usual ropes, pulleys, weights, etc.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a window of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, durable, weather proof, and which may be manufactured and installed at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a window constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through the frame.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in horizontal section, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view in vertical section.
Figure 5 is a view in side elevation of a portion of one of the sashes.
Figure .6 is a detail view in elevation of a portion of one of the notched guide strips.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that reference numeral I designates generally a frame of suitable dimensions and material. The sides 2 of the frame I have formed therein vertical grooves 3 in which guide strips 4 are fixed, said guide strips projecting into the usual ways 5 of the frame I. The exposed vertical edges of the guide strips 4 have formed therein spaced notches or recesses 6.
Sashes l are slidably mounted in the frame I, a
are formed to provide protuberances II. The chambers in accommodate holding devices I: which secure the sashes 1 in adjusted position in conjunction with the strips 4. As illustrated to advantage in Figures 4 and 5 of the drawings, the holders l2 include fiat springs 13 comprising outwardly offset intermediate portions M which are secured at IE on the protuberances I l. Pairs of ears [6 project outwardly from the end portions of the springs l3. Peripherally grooved rollers I! are journaled between the pairs of ears It, said rollers being operable on the guide strips 4 and engageable in the notches or recesses 6.
It is thought that the manner in which the device functions will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the springs I3 are at all times under tension, whereby the rollers i! will be pressed outwardly against the opposed edges of the guide strips 4. Of course. the sashes I slide upwardly and downwardly on the strips 4 which also function as weather strips. When the rollers l1 engage in the notches or recesses 6, the tension of the springs i3 is suliicient to secure the sashes l in adjusted position.
It is believed that the many advantages of a window constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction, may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
A window comprising a frame having ways at the sides thereof, a sash having side members slidably engaged in said ways, strips secured to the frame intermediate the sides of said ways, each strip having a longitudinal series of uniformly spaced notches in its inner edge, said side members of the sash having central longitudinal grooves in the outer edges thereof snugly slidably receiving said strips, and a pair of spring projected rollers mounted in each side member of the sash, said notches being curved to receive the rollers, the rollers of each pair being spaced apart a distance equal to the combined distances between a plurality of more than two adjacent notches and so as to simultaneously engage in non-adjacent notches of the associated strip.
