1 Claim. (01. 2-268) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a garment.

Mlore specifically, the invention proposes the construction of a garment having removable shoulder pads, the garment being adapted to be worn as a sport jacket when the shoulder pads are attached, and to be worn as a sport shirt when the pads are removed.

Still further it isproposed to provide a garment as aforesaid in which the pads may be removed for cleaning both for sanitary purposes and in order to avoid bunching and hardening of the said sanitary shoulder pads.

Still further it is proposed to provide a garment as aforesaid in which the pads are connected to one end by a hidden zipper and at the other end by a snap fastener.

Another object is to provide a garment as aforesaid having a double yoke forming at each shoulder two pockets for two removable pads, the pads being secured in place by snap fasteners or other similar means.

Another object is to provide a garment as aforesaid having a shoulder pad in each shoulder, each pad having its "zipper along one side and its snap fastener at the peak opposite thereto.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The garment according to this invention, may be worn by either man or woman, and comprises a front I0 buttoned down the middle, a collar H, sleeves l2, pockets l3 and a back 14. In each shoulder on the inside of the garment is sewed a zipper" strip [5, this strip extending along the seam l6 where the sleeve meets the front and back of the garment. Thus when the garment is worn without the pads, the strip is not noticeable. A snap fastener eye I! is secured to the seam 18 between the front and back of the garment and between the seam l6 and the collar of the garment.

A removable shoulder pad l9, has a snap fastener snap 20 in one peak or corner of the pad,

this snap 20 being adapted-to coact with eye II to hold one end of the pad to the garment. A "zipper strip 2| is sewed across the pad parallel to the base thereof opposite the peak having the snap 20 andslightly spaced from this base, strip 2| coacti-ng with strip 15 to secure the pad at another point .to the garment. Strip 2! is provided 1 with a zipper control 22 for effecting connection of the two zipper" strips. -The stitches securing a strip 2! to the pad, divide the pad into two portions, a large portion 23 and a small portion 24.

that it is hidden and does not come in contact with the wearer. To remove the shoulder pads, the snap. fasteners are first opened and the pads folded over to the position shown in Fig. 4. The zippers are then opened and the pads removed. Thus the garment can be quickly changed from a jacketjo a shirt, and vice versa.

Each of the pads is made. of two trian ular line ll-H tures of the back' are best shown in Fig. 13 where it will be seen that beneath the collar l I there is a wide strip 25 extending entirely across the back and meeting the tops of the sleeves at the shoulders. Thus this strip 25 rests on the top of a persons shoulders when the garment is worn. The back also has pleats 26.

On the inside of the garment the strip 25 is lined with a lining or strip 21, the strips 25 and 21 being, sewed together along their longitudinal edges or seams 28' only to form a double yoke, and being open at their ends providing two pockets 28. The edges of the ends of the strip 21 are protected by tape 29, which is in line with the seam [6' between the sleeve and the body of the garment. A shoulder pad 30 is disposed in each pocket, that is to say, in the space between the strips 25 and 21 at the ends thereof.

The edges at side 3| are tucked in and sewed together but the edges at side 32 are taped.

Side 3| is curved concavely to provide a well fitting shoulder pad. Side 32 is slightly convex but it may be straight if desired. The pad is stuffed with cotton 33. In its longitudinal center, spaced a short distance from the side 3|, the pad has a snap fastener snap 34 which divides the pad into a small portion 35 and a largeportion 36.

A snap fastener eye 31 is secured to the strip 21. in its longitudinal center at each end thereof partially in the tape 39,-the eye opening inwardly into the'space between the strips 25 and 21. Each pad is secured in place by means of its snap coacting with the correlated eye. When so disposed the portion 35' of the pad extends outwards beyond the seam l6, forcing the shoulder outwardly to provide a square effect, such effect being desirable when the garment is being worn as a jacket. When the pads are removed, the shoulders of the garment will slouch comfortably over the shoulders of the person wearing the garment so that the garment forms a suitable sport shirt.

While the pads IQ of the garment of Fig. 1 are not shown extending materially outwardly of the seam I6, they may be similar to the pads 30 if desired, and similarly, the pads 30 may be disposed as are the pads, l9 if desired.

From the foregoingdescription of the two em bodiments of the present invention, it will be seen that a combination jacket-sport shirt has been provided which can be quickly changed from oneto the other without making any alterations back H".

4 in the garment itself. The garment of Figs. 8-14 has the advantage over the garment of Figs. 1-7 that a pocket is provided for the pads making it unnecessary to secure them other than by the single snap fastener. In other respects the garments have similar advantages.

The feature of removable pads, besides making the garment a combination jacket-sport shirt,

also provides for the easy cleaning and replace- In Figs. 15-19, the garment is shown with a front portion l0", a collar ll, sleeves l2", and In this form of the invention, the shoulder pad 40 may be disposed under a bridging strip II and removablysecured thereto by snap fastener members 42 and 43. The shoulder pad positioning bridging strip is secured in position by a line of stitches M to the seam I3" at one side, and by tacks 45 at the other end of the bridging strip, to the seams l8" of the garment.

In other respects this form of the invention is similar to that previously shown and like reference numerals identify like parts in each of the several views.

.This arrangement will also permit ready removal of the shoulder pads when it -is desired to wear the garment as a shirt or when the garment is to be laundered.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and,modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

A shirt or similar garment comprising a front opening down the middle, a back, a collar, two sleeves, a strip connecting said front, back, sleeves and collar, said strip forming the shoulder portions of said garment, a lining for said strip disposed adjacent the under surface thereof and terminating at points adjacent said sleeves, said lining being spaced from said strip ,except at the longitudinal edges, said longitudinal edges being stitched to said lining thereby forming an opened ended channel, a removable shoulder pad
