Application December 14, 1943, Serial No. 514,201 1 Claim. (01. 5 -354) This invention relates to a sanitary pad for beds and cribs and more particularly to a sanitary cover-pad for mattresses.

It is the primary object of this invention to provide a bed-pad in the form of a large pillow case open at each end and provided on its upper side with an extended flap ateach end, the inside surface of the upper side having fastened thereto a flannel lining, and a removable rubber sheet arranged between said flannel lining and the lower side inserted in place through one or the other of said open ends, the pad being placed on the mattress with the flannel side uppermost and the flaps being tucked under the mattress.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel arrangement and combination of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

A practical embodiment of the invention is i1- lustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is an end elevational view of a mattress with the sanitary pad placed thereon, a portion of said pad being shown in section.

Referring to the drawing in detail, I denotes the sanitary bed-pad which comprises a bottom portion II and a top portion I2, both formed of a suitable Washable fabric, such for example as that commonly used for bed sheets. Both top and bottom portions are of the same dimensions having a Width corresponding to the width of a standard size mattress and a length less than that of said mattress, see Figure 2, wherein the transverse edges of the pad are indicated as at I3 and I4, and the longitudinal edges as at I and I 6.

Joined to the longitudinal edge portions I 5a and IBa of the top portion I2 as by the stitching I I are flaps I8 and I9, respectively, the joined end portions of the top portion and flaps being turned under and inwardly, see Figure 4. The flaps I8 and I9 are formed of the same material as the top and bottom portions I I and I2, and are of a width corresponding to the length of the pad, and are each of sufficient length as to permit being tucked under the mattress 23 when the pad I3 is placed in position. The sides and end edge of each of the flaps are provided with a hem 2I secured by stitching 22.

Arranged on the underside of the top portion I2 is a layer comprising a sheet of outing flannel 24 which is secured to the top portion along the transverse edges, I3 and I4 thereof, in a manner to be hereinafter described.

The bottom portion I I of the pad I0 is hemmed along the edges thereof, the longitudinal edges- 26 being formed into a double fold hem 21 secured by stitching 28, see Figure 4, while the transverse edges 33 are defined by a hem 3 I which is secured to correspondin hems 32 formed onv the transverse edges I3 and I4 of the top portion. I2 as by the stitching 33. The hems 32 of the transverse edge portions I3 and I4 are folded under the corresponding edge portions of the flannel sheet 24, the stitching 33 thus securing together the top and bottom portions and theflannel sheet 24, as shown in Figure 5. If desired the flannel sheet 24 may also be secured to the longitudinal edge portions I5, I6 of the top portion I2.

From the above description it will be observed that the longitudinal edges I5-26 and I62B of the top and bottom portions I2 and I I, respectively, lie substantially in the same vertical plane, see Figure 4, and define at each longitudinal side of the pad I0 an opening 35. A rubber sheet 36 is arranged to be inserted through one or the other of said openings 35 for placement between the bottom portion II and the flannel layer or sheet 24, the rubber sheet 36 being of such dimensions as to substantially cover the entire inside surface of said bottom portion II. The rubber sheet 36 may be removed as desired to permit laundering of the pad I0 and is readily inserted into the pad in much the same manner as a pillow is placed in a pillow case except that the rubber sheet may be inserted through the opening 35 at either side.

The complete pad I0 is placed on the mattress 20 with the flaps I8 and I9 depending equally from the sides thereof at each side of the bed. The pad is held in position on the mattress by tucking the flaps thereunder, the flaps lying between the bottom of the mattress 20 and the bed spring 31, as clearly shown in Figure 1.

It is to be understood that the sanitary bedpad as above described may be made in a variand is easier to handle than sheets, and can be i used for a variety of purposes.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

A sanitary pad for beds comprising an upper and a lower washable sheet having a width approximately equal to that of a mattress and a length less than that of said mattress, each 1ongitudinal edge of the upper sheet having an inturned hem and a depending flap secured to said hem, each longitudinal edge of said lower sheet having an inturned stitched hem of double thickness, the outer edges of the corresponding longitudinal hems of the upper and lower sheets being in substantially the same vertical plane, each transverse edge of the upper sheet having an inturned hem, each transverse edge of the lower sheet also having an inturned hem, a flannel sheet beneath said upper sheet having a transverse edge thereof positioned between the corresponding transverse inturned hem portions of said upper sheet, stitching securing together the corresponding transverse inturned hem portions of the upper sheet and the corresponding transverse edge of said flannel sheet and the corresponding transverse inturned hem of said lower sheet, and a rubber pad adapted to be inserted between said flannel sheet and said lower sheet upon raising either one of said flaps.
