1 Claim. (01. 128-81) Thi invention relates to a foot pad which positioned under the head of the sesamoid bones of the first metatarsal articulation serves as a correction for enlarged joints and bunion reducer.
An object of the invention is to provide a foot pad that relieves pronation or abduction common in a bunion or halax valgus.
Another object of the invention is to provide a footpad that will relieve pressure or friction on the enlarged joint or bunion at the same time holding the metatarsal support in correct position by means of an elastic band that passes between the great toe and second toe.
A further object of the invention is to provide a footpad that has incorporated in its structure a toe spreader and aperture for relieving pressure on a corn or callous formed on the foot, the toe spreader causing a gentle pull on the great toe to stretch the contracted ligaments and muscles.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 'is an elevational View of an embodiment of the invention as applied to a human foot; Figure 2 is a side view as applied to the foot; Figure 3 is a cross sectional view of the foot- Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view;
Figure 5 is an inside view of the pad;
Figure 6 is a sectional view on the line 6-15 of Figure 5;
Figure 7 is an outside view of the pad; and
Figure 8 is a perspective view of the pad.
Referring more in detail to the drawing the reference numeral l0 designates the footpad which is provided with the arcuate bottom edge I2 ..oval shaped side edges l4 and I6 and curved semi-circular shaped top edges l8 and 20 respectively. A curved line of stitching 22 along the vertical medial line of the pad separates the pad in to portions 24 and 26 respectively which are adopted to engage the bottom of the human foot 28 beneath the head of the sesamoid bones of the first metatarsal articulation and engage the side of the foot over the enlarged joint or bunion formed thereon.
The pad is formed of two similar shaped sections which are joined along their marginal edges by stitching 30 and the pockets 32 and 34 formed in the portions 24 and 26 are adopted to be filled with padding 36 by means of openings 38 in the outside of the foot pad thus the thickness of the pad can be adjusted by the insertion or removal of the padding 36.
The portion 26 is provided with an opening 40 which is positioned on the foot in such a manner that a corn or callus formed on the foot will be in the depression formed by the opening and a concentric row of stitching 42 surrounds the opening and prevents the padding from becoming displaced with respect to the opening.
For attachment to the foot the pad is provided with an elastic band 44 which engages the bottom side and top of the foot and the band 46 which is passed over the top and bottom of the foot between the great toe and the second toe.
A substantially triangular shaped pad 48 is loosely mounted on the band 46 by means of the opening 50 and thus the pad 48 can be adjusted on the band to lie in the correct position with relation to the toes and enlarged joint.
Thus a footpad has been provided that will accomplish the objects of the invention and it is believed that the construction and method of wearing of the pad will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
It is also to be understood that changes in the form, shape and proportion of the minor details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A device of the character described for application to the foot of a human being in a position below the head of the sesamoid bones of the first metatarsal articulation and adjacent the enlarged joint of the foot comprising a pad having a dividing medial line of stitching for dividing said pad into an oval shaped section for contact with said foot below the head of the sesamoid bones and an oval shaped section for contact with the enlarged joint of the foot, pockets in said sections, openings in said pockets, padding in said pockets adapted to be inserted through said pockets to Vary the thickness thereof, an opening in the section in contact with the enlarged joint of the foot adapted to surround a corn or callous on said foot to relieve pressure therefrom, an elastic band secured at one end to the section in contact with the foot below the head of the sesamoid bones adjacent the lower edge thereof and to the section in contact with the'enlarged joint adjacent the lower edge thereof, a second elastic band 3 connected to the upper edge of the section in contact with the foot below the head of the sesamoid bones and to the medial portion of the section contacting the enlarged joint for retaining said device on the foot and a substantially triangular shaped pad adjustably mounted on said last mentioned elastic band for spreading the great toe of the foot.
