l 'I'his invention relates to merchandise cartons. and more particularly to an improved carton folder adapted to be folded and wrapped around an article of merchandise to provide an economical and sturdy carton therefor.
In accordance with this invention, the carton folder comprises essentially enclosing panels' body which when assembled is inset within the tubular body. Each end wall panel is hingedly connected to the adjacent end of the bottom wall panel by a spacer section', Ywhich is folded to overlie the inside face of the bottom wall panel. The front edge of each end wall panel is connected to the adjacent end of the front wall panel by a bellows fold portion designed to overlie the ina side face of theI front wall panel. Similarly, the rear edge of each end wall panel is connected to the adjacent end of the rear wall panel by a bellows fold portion which overlies the inside face of the rear wall panel. Each bellows fold portion comprises a pair of collapsing sections which fold one upon the other when the folder is assembled into carton form. Thus each end wall panel is rigidly maintained in xed position within the tubular body by the end spacer section, and a pair of `bellows fold sections.
Where a carton having four sides is to be` formed, the enclosing panels comprise bottom. rear and front wall `panels and a closure panel which fold around the end wall panels which have fourcorresponding" sides. An out-turned bracer iiap may be hinged to the top` edge of each end wall panel, the bracer aps bracing and providing a support for the closure panel. Each bracer ap may also be provided with a pair of locking tabs which maybe inserted between the adjacen`t front and rear wallpanels and the adjacent bellows fold portions to thereby maintain the front and rear wall panels in rigid carton assembled position prior to closing of the cover panel.
Cartons may be formed in accordance with this invention having any desired shape or cross-secf. tional contour. For example, in place of a fourmay be inserted between theinside face of the front wall panel and the adjacent bellows fold` portions, thereby retaining the carton assembled,form.
Cartons formed in accordance with this inin closed ventio Ilmay be used to contain numerous arti cles/ merchandise which can be placed upon the bottom wall panel of the blank or wrapper and the wrapper then assembled into carton form around the article.v In assembling the wrapper the end portions of the blank or wrapper are folded over the bottom wall panel. When the end panels are raised to a position substantially at right angles to the bottom wall panel, the front and rear wall panels will automatically swing into erect carton-forming position. The wrapperI may also be assembled around the merchandise' by folding the end portions of the blank inwardly and then raising the front and rear wall panels into erect container form position` which operation will automatically raise and retain the end wall panels in erect container forming position.
The article becomes completely` enclosed within` the carton `when the cover panel is swung into closed position and its tuck-in flap inserted between the inside face of the front wall panel and panel and the adjacent bellows fo1d\portions.
Where the carton is to contain articles of relatively fragile nature that should be ysuspended within the carton in spaced relation to the enclosing panels, suitable apertures or other means are associated with the end wall panels which permits suspension of the articleby and between the'end wall panels in spaced relation to the enclosing panels. The ends of the article are fur-v ther protected from damage or injury bythe ends of the enclosing panels which extend be-` yond the end wall panels to form a protectingrim at each end of the carton.

Another object of this invention is toprovide a sturdy and economical carton particularly designed for the packaging of delicate and fragile articles and which may be formed from a pre-k pared blank without machine assembly.
Other objects of this invention will become apparent as the disclosure proceeds..

The folder forming blanks shown in Figs. 1 and f 12 may be formed from paperboard material of suitable quality cut and scored to provide a onepiece folder adapted to be quickly and conveniently erected into carton form. The blanks as shown in Figs. 1 and 12 may be economically formed on a cutting and creasing machine adapted to cut andcrease the blanks in multiple interfltted arrangement from large sheets or rolls of the selected paperboard material.
'I'he prepared blank shown in Fig. 1 comprises a bottom wall panel I, a front wall panel 2 hinged to the bottom wall panel I along a score line 4, and a rear Wall panel 3 hinged to the opposite edge of the bottom wall panel I along the score line 5. A cover panel 6 is hinged to theY opposite edge of the rear wall panel 3 along a score-linel. The cover panel 6 may be provided with a tuck-in flap 8 hinged to the front edge thereof along score y line 9.
An end wall panel I4 is provided at each end .as to snugly seat betweenthe front Wall panel 2 and rear wall panel 3 when the box-forming part of the carton is erected into container forming position, and the end spacer sections when folded over the inside face of the bottom wall panel I maintain the end wall panels in final inset position, as shownmore particularly in Fig. 2.
The front edge of each end w all panel I4 is joined to the adjacent end of the front wall panel 2 by means of a bellows fold portion comprising hingedly connected bellows sections I2 and I6.v
Each bellows 'section I2' is hingedly connected to the adjacent edgeof the front wall panel 2 by a score line II', which is substantially in alignment with and a continuation of the score line II. The companion bellows fold panel I6 is hinged to the front edge of the adjacent end wall panel I4 along the score line 23. A diagonal extending score line I8 provides a hinging connection between the bellows sections I2 and I6. 'Ihe score line I8 substantially meets the score lines 23 and I5 at their point of intersection. Bellows section I2 is separated from end spacer section I0 by a cut-line 4.' which is substantially in alignment with the score line 4.
'I'he rear side edge of each end wall panel I4 issimilarly connected to the adjacent end ofthe rear wall panel 3 by a bellows portion whiclf comprises a pair of bellows sections I3 and I1 hingedly connected along the diagonally extending score line I9. Bellows section I3 is hinged to the end of rear wall panel 3 along the score line I I" which extends substantially in alignment with the score line II, and bellows section I1 is hingedlyconnected to the rear side edge of end wall panel I4 along score line 23. A cut line 5 separates bellows section I3 from the adjacent end spacer section I 0, cut line 5 being substantially in alignment with score line 5. The diagonally extending score linel I9 provides a. hinging connection between the bellows sections I3 and I1 at the point packed in the carton.` 'I'he blanks which have been cut to the form shown in Fig. 1 may be shipped to the merchandise packer in ilat condition to be thereafter set up and folded to contain the merchandise as needed.
'I'he blankas shown in Fig. 1 maybe quickly assembled into carton form. bya few simple,
quickly performed operations. Each endportion of the blank is folded about the score lines II',
II and II so that bellows section I2 will overlie the inside face of front-wall panel 2, end spacer section I will overlie the inside face of bottom wall panel I, and bellows section I3 will overlie the inside face of rear wall panel 3, as illustrated in Fig. 2. By raising the front wall pane1 2 and rear wall panel 3 into a position substantially at right angles to the bottom wall panel I.- the end wall panels 4 will be automatically erected into a position substantially at right angles to the bottom panel wall I. 0r, as an alternative method of assemblythe end wall panels I4 may be raised to a position substantially at right 'angles to the bottom wall panel I, and this operation will automatically raise the iront wall panel 2 and the rear wall panel 3 into a position substantially at right angles to the bottom wall panel I, and thus erect the carton into container form. By either method of assembly bellows fold sections I2 will hug the inside face of front wall panel 2 and bellows sections I3 will hug the inside face of rear wall panel 3, bellows sections I6 vautomatically folding to overlie their companion bellows sections I2 and bellows sections I1 automatically folding to overlie their respective companion section I3. Prior to or during thismanipulation of the front wall lpanel 2 and the rear wall panel 3, the merchandise article T may be inserted into position.
Upon erection of the box part comprising bottom wall panel I, front wall panel 2, rear wall panel 3 and end wall panels I4 into merchandisecontaining position, the carton will appear as illustrated in Fig. 3, the bracer aps 20 are outturned to provide a strut extending between the "front and rear wall panels and a support for the end wall panels. The carton is closed by swinging the cover panel 6 into a closed position so as to overlie the bracer flaps 20, and the tuck-in flap 8 may be inserted between the inside face of the front wall panel 2 and the adjacent bellows sections I2, as indicated in Fig. 4. The cover front wall panel 2 to, the tuck-in flap 8 and theadjacent bellows section AI2.
There is shown in Fig. 6 a prepared paperboard blank which is similar to the blank shown in A Fig. 1 except for the addition of locking t- abs 24 and 25 associated with each of the bracer flaps 20. The locking ilap 24 is hinged to a side edge of ythe bracerilap 2II.along the score linel 26, which substantially meets the end of the score line 23' and a locking ilap 25 is hinged to the 6 opposite side :edge of each bracer flap 20 along the score line 21 which substantially meets the end oi' the score line 23, as illustrated in Fig. 6. Thoblank yas shown in Fig. 6 is folded into 5 carton form by iirst folding end portions about Y the score line II',` II' and I I, in the manner heretofore described, so that bellows section I2 overlies the inside face of the front wall panel 2, and bellows -section I3 overlies the inside face l0` of rear wall panel 3. The end wall panels I4 may then beraised, and the article "I" insertedy into position. Raising oi the end wall panels I4 automatically raises the front and rear wall` `panels into erect position. The bracer :flaps 20 are then folded outwardly as shown in Fig. 8 and the locking tabs 24 inserted between the inside face ofthe front wall panel 2 and adjacent face of the bellows section I2, and similarly the locking tabs 25 are inserted between the inside faceof the rear wall panel 3 and the adjacent face of the bellows section I3. The locking tabs 24 and 25 may have a rounded edge 26' if desired to facilitate insertion. It will be noted by referring to Fig.'9 that the locking tabs24 and 25 maintain the front wall panel 2 and the rear Wall panel 3 in rigid box assembled position to provide a set up box part which is held in rigid set up position prior to closing of the cover panel I3. The cover panel 6 is swung into closed position so as to overlie the bracer flaps 20 and the cover tuck-in ilap 8 may be inserted between the inside face of the vfront wall panel 2 and the outside face of the adjacent locking tabs 24 to hold the cover panel in closed position, as shown in Fig. 11. The cover panel may be sealed in closed position by means of an adhesive strip 30 or by means of staples' 3l, as illustrated in Fig. 4.
There is illustrated in Fig. 12 a prepared blank or wrapper designed to form a carton presenting only three enclosing panels and illustrating that various other carton shapes may be formed by employing the teachings of this invention. The blank as shown in Fig. 12 comprises a bottom wall panelI, front wall panel 2 hinged. to the bottom wall panel I along the score line 4, a rear wall panel 3 hinged to the opposite edge of the bottom wall panel I along the score line 5 and a tuck-in flap 8 hinged to the top edge of the 50'rear wall panel 3 along a score line 3'. The
triangular end wall panel I4 at each end of the blank is connected to the adjacent end. of the bottom wall panel I by an end spacer section III,
the Vencl spacer section I0' being hinged to the adjacent end of the bottom wall panel I bya score line II extending substantially at right angles to the score lines4 and 5. Each end wall panel I4' is hinged to the end spacer 4section I0 by a score line I5 which extends substantially e0 parallel to the score line II. The front edge of each end wall panel I4' is `joined to the adjacent end of the front wall panel 2 by means of a bellows fold portion comprising hingedly connected bellows sections I2 and I 6. .65 Each bellows section I2 is hingedly connected to the adjacent edge of the front wall panel 2 by a'score line I I' which is substantially a continuation of the score line I I. The companion 'bellows fold panel I6' is hinged to the front edgeof the triangular end wall panel I4 along the edge forming score line 3|. A. diagonally extending score line *I8 provides -a hinging connection between the bellows section I2 and I6 and substantially meets the score lines 3l and I5 at their point of intersection. Bellows section I2 is separated from end spacer section I by a cut line 4 which is substantially in alignment with score line I.
The rear side edge of each triangular wall panel onally extending score line i9. Bellows section I3 is hinged to the end of rear wall panel 3 along the score line II, which is substantially a continuation` of score line II, and bellows section Il' is hingedly connected along the edge forming score line 32 to the adjacent end wall panel I4.V A cut line 5 separates bellows section I3 from the adjacent end spacer section I0, cut line 5' being substantially in alignment with score line 5.
The blank shown in Fig. 12 may be quickly assembled by folding each end portion of the blank about score lines II', II and II"` so that bellows section I2 will overlie the inside face of front wall panel 2, end spacer section I0 will overlie the inside face of bottom wall panel I, and bellows section I3 will overlie the inside face of rear vwall panel 3, as illustrated in-Fig. 13. By raising the triangular end wall panel I4 to a position subg stantially at right angles to the bottom wall panel I, the front and rear wall panels 2 and 3 will be raised to the position shown in Fig. 13.. The contents or merchandise can be placed upon the bottom wall panel I and the front and rear wall panels 2 and 3 further raised vto the'position shown in Fig. 14. The tuck-in flap 8 may then be inserted between the inside face of the front wall panel 2 and the adjacent face of the bellows sections I2 to lock the carton in fixed assembled form. If desired, suitable apertures or other means may be associated with the end wall panels I4 to provide suspension means for the article contained therein.
From the above description, it is evident that a carton folder has been provided which may be economically formed from a single blank ofV pasteboard, fiberboard vor other like paperboard material, which need be printed on one side only thereof and may be cut and creased in multiple i and packaged therein as the folder is set up.
No adhesive or other securing means is required in assembling the folder into carton form and no glueing or box assembly machinery is needed by the merchandise packer to assemble and close the carton.
The assembled carton is rigid and strong in construction. If the contained article T is delicate or subject to injury, it may be held suspended between the inset end wall panels and the ends of the article are thus adequately protected by the projecting ends of the enclosing panels. The enclosing panels, when fully assembled in carton form, are spaced from the article T, as shown in Figs. 5 and 10, so that any blows which l these enclosing panels may encounter, are not the carton. 'I'he assembledcarton body is also protected, strengthened and reenforced by the end spacer section III, and the bellows sections I2 -and I3. Out-turned bracer flaps 20 may be provided as reinforcing support for the cover panel .6, assist in maintaining the enclosing panels 2 and 3 in spaced relation, and further serve to stillen and strengthen the end wall panels I4,

and a pair of locking ears hinged to each of said bracer flaps adapted to interlock with said adjacent bellows fold portions to retain the adjacent A side wall panels of the carton in fixed assembled position.
11. An improved carton folder formed from a single blank of paperboard material comprising, a bottom Wall panel and front and rear wall panels hinged to said bottom wall panel, a pair of inset end wall panels each hingedly connected by a spacer section to the adjacent end of said bottom wall panel, a bellows fold portion hingedly connecting opposite side edges of each of said end wall panels to the adjacent ends of said front and rear wall enclosing panels, and a tuck-in element extending from said rear wall panel adapted to be inserted between the inside face 4of said front wall'enclosing panel and the adjacent bellows portions for retaining said cartonv in assembled form, each of said'bellows fold portions comprising a main bellows section and a complementary bellows section, each of said main bellows sections being hinged to the adjacent end of the adjacent Vis in erect position.
12.A/n improved carton folder formed from a single blank of paperboard material comprising, a bottom wall panel and front and rear wall enclosing panels hinged to said bottom wall panel,
a pair of inset end wall panels each hingedly connected by a spacer section to the adjacent end of said bottom wall panel, a bellows fold portion hingedly connecting opposite side edges of each of said end -wall panels to the adjacent end of 12 section and to the adjacent side edge of the end wall panel and adapted to overlie only a part of said main bellows section when the end wall panel is in erect position.
13. An improved carton formed from a single blank of paperboard -material comprising, a bottom wall panel and front 4and rearv wall enclosing panels hinged to said bottom .wall panel along opposite side edges thereof, a pair of inset triangular shaped end wall panels, a bellows fold portion hingedly connectingopposite side edges of each of said end wall panels to the adjacent ends of said front and rear wall enclosing panels, and a tuck-in ilap extending from said rear wall enclosing panel adapted to be inserted between the inside face of said front wall enclosing panel and the adjacent bellows fold portions for retaining said cartonA in assembled form, each of said bellows fold portions comprising a main bellows section and a complementary bellows section, each of said main bellows sections being hinged to the adjacent end of the adjacent enclosing panel and adapted to overlie the inside face thereof, said complementary bellows section being hinged to the inner end of said main bellows section and to the adjacent side edge of the end said front and rear wall panel, and a tuck-in iiap face thereof, said complementary bellows section,
being hinged to thev inner end of said main bellows wall panel and adapted to overlie only a part of said main-bellows section when the end wall panel is in erect position.
14. `An improved carton formed from a single blank of paperboard material comprising. a bottom wall panel and-front and rear wall enclosing panels hinged to said bottom wall panel along opposite'side edges thereof, a pair of inset triangular shaped end wall panels, a spacer'section overlyingthe bottom wall panel and connecting the adjacent end of the bottom wall panel to the adjacent end wall panel, a bellows-fold portion hingedly connecting opposite side edges of each of said end wall panels to the adjacent ends of said front and rear wall enclosing panels, and a tuck-in iiap extending from said rear wall enclosing panel adapted .to be inserted between the inside face of said front wall enclosing panel and the adjacent bellows fold portions for retaining said carton in assembled form, each of said bellows fold portions comprising a main bellows section and a complementary bellows section, each of said main bellows sections being hinged to the adjacent end of the adjacent enclosing panel and adapted to overlie the inside face thereof, said complementary bellows section being hinged to the inner end of said main bellows section and to the-adjacent side edge of the end wall panel and adapted to overlie lonly a Kpart of said main bellows section when the end wall panel is in erect position.
