1 anim. (c1. 21e- 75l -Ihe invention relates to dispensing devices and more particularly to devices for dispensing liquids such as perfumes, shaving lotions, Yand the llike receptacles.
The object Yof t-he invention is toprovide a dispensing device whereby V7the-expulsion of the liquid from thecontainer may be controlled at will and which is constructed in a simple manner so as to reduce the possibility-of dislocation 'of the parts to a minimum.
"The :invention contemplates further `the provision of a novel and simple dispensing device designed in addition toits other functions to serve as -a closure 'for the receptacle in which the liquid is contained. l
A further object ofthe invention is to provide a simple and nov-el dispensing device which may be readily sealedat will to prevent unintentional spilling of the contents of the receptacle and to enable the latter and its contents to be 'carried about, for instance, in a traveling bag without danger of spilling lsaid contents.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the description hereinafter, and the features of novelty will be 'pointed' out inthe claim.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates an example of the invention Withoutk dening its limits,
Fig. 1 is an elevation of a receptacle with the novel dispensing device in place thereon;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section of the novel dispensing device; and
Fig. 3 is a plan View thereof.
In the illustrated example, the novel dispensing device is shown in the form of a closure for receptacles such as a bottle 5 in which the liquid to be dispensed is contained.
The dispensing device itself comprises a sleeve 6 suitably fixed upon the neck 'I of the bottle or other container 5, said sleeve including an inwardly-directed annular flange 8 which is internally screw-threaded as illustrated in Fig. 2.
The dispensing device further includes a hollow member 9 threaded into the flange 8 and including an annular outwardly-directed ange I0 which projects over the flange 8 of the sleeve 6. If desired, a gasket I I of suitable resilient or other packing material may be located between the flanges I0 and 8 for preventing leakage at this point.
At its upper end, the member 9 is internally screw-threaded for the reception of an externallythreaded bushing I2 having an outwardly-directed flange I3 adapted to lie in surface engagement with the flange l0. The bushing I 2 is in- 2 ternally screw-threaded at' least throughout a part of its length as indicated at 1'4.
A vtubular 'spoutv I5 extends axially through the bushing I2 in opposite 4directions and is in screwthreaded engagement with 'the threads M of. said bushing' I2, and at its inner end, is provided With an .annular flange 'ljslidablyLIittingthe interior of the member 9 as shown in '.Fig. 2;

IIn 'order that the, ball v.alve.`2| may lalways automatically roll into 'position upon the seat- 'I9` to seal the passage2ll, 'when thisis desired, the bottom of the member 9 preferably'is inclined toward said passage', 'for instance, as illustrated 'in Fig. 2,. The inclination maybe 4at Vany suitable angle to effect the intended result, an angle of 59 has been found to give satisfactory results.
As illustrated in Fig. 2, the parts of the novel dispensing device are adjusted to permit the dispensing of the contents of the bottle or other container 5. As long as the latter remains in an upright position, the ball-valve 2l will remain in place on the valve-seat I9 and thereby seal the opening 20 to prevent evaporation of the contents of said bottle 5 or other unintentional disposal thereof.
In this adjustment of the parts, the valve seat I8 is located at a distance from the valve-seat I9 so that if the bottle 5 or other container is tilted or inverted, the ball-valve 2| will leave the valveseat I9 and position itself in the interior space of the hollow member 9 between the tWo valveseats or said ball-valve may even seat itself upon the passage 20 into the interior of the member 9 and thence out to the passage I'I of the dispensing spout I5 in such quantity as may be desired. This is dependent upon the length of time during which the bottle 5 or other container is manipulated as described and may also be regulated by adjusting the spout I5 in the bushing I2 to regulate the distance between the two valve-seats I8 and I9. After a given dispensing operation has been completed, the bottle 5 or other container is returned to the upright position illustrated in Fig. 1 in which the ball-valve 2| automatically reseats itself upon the seat I9 and thereby seals the passage 20 to prevent evaporation and other 'loss of the contents of said bottle or other receptacle 5.
If it is desired to carry the receptacle 5 with its contents, as, for instance, while traveling from place to place, the novel dispensing device may be adjusted to lock the ball-valve 2| on the seat I9 to thereby prevent any leakage of the contents from the bottle 5 or other receptacle through the passage 20. This is accomplished by adjusting the dispensing spout I5 downwardly in the bushing I2 until the valve-seat I8 iirmly engages the ball-valve 2| and clamps it against movement of any kind relatively to the Valve-seat I9.
The novel dispensing device may be readily combined with bottles or other receptacles either so as to be removable therefrom at will and thus capable of being reutilized or the device may be permanently secured to the bottle or other receptacle and discarded therewith when the liquid contents have been fully disposed of.
The novel dispensing device is extremely simple in construction and, accordingly, is not likely to easily get out of order and, at the same time, is of maximum eilciency for its intended purposes.
'I'he novel dispensing device may be made of metal or any other suitable materials and is particularly adapted to be made of plastics such as Lucite and the like.
When the novel dispensing device is removably combined with the bottle or other receptacle 5 as illustrated in Fig. 2, the hollow member 9 and its associated elements may readily be removed from the sleeve 6 to permit refilling of the bottle or other receptacle 5 at will.
While the novel device is designed primarily 4 to control the dispensing of liquids such as perfumes, shaving lotions, and the like, it obviously may be utilized for controlling the ejection of other types of liquids, and in some forms, may be used for controlling the dispensation of other types of materials.
Although the present invention has been described in conjunction with a preferred embodiment, it is to be understood that modifications and variations may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, as those skilled in the art will readily understand. Such Variations and modifications are considered to be within the purview and scope of the claim.
I claim:
A dispensing device of the kind described comprising a sleeve adapted for connection with a receptacle and having an inwardly-directed annular flange internally screw-threaded, a hollow memberthreaded into said sleeve and having a passage provided with a valve-seat at one end, an internally-threaded bushing threaded into said hollow member, a tubular dispensing spout threaded into said bushing and provided with a valve-seat at its inner end in spaced relation to said rst valve-seat, and a ball valve in said hollow member movable between said valve-seats to control ejection of the liquid contents of said receptacle, and automatically returning to one of said seats at the conclusion of an ejecting operation, to seal the receptacle against losses of its contents, said dispensing spout being adjustable Y to clamp the ball valve between and in sealing engagement with both of said valve-seats to seal the contents in said receptacle.
