This inventionrelates to a garment which may be a pantie girdle, underwear, shorts, slacks, swimsuit or similar garment worn for dress 'or sports, and itds one object of the invention to becoming stained and also-extending the length of time a garment may be' -worn before it must be laundered. 1

Another object of the invention-is to provide the garment with a sanitary protector which covers seams in the crotch portion of the garment and prevents chafing.

Another object of theinvention is to provide a protector which will be-m'oisture proof and so formed :that it will be held flat and prevented from becoming wrinkled wherrin-use.

Another object of the inventionis to provide a protector so constructed that it may be very easily removed for washing and then ironed and :replaced or vputiaway for 'futureiuse, the fasteners for the protector being so located that when the ,protector .is applied they will be covered and prevented from .being .exp.osed:and causing irritation. 7

Another object ofthe'invention is to provide a protector having stitchingabout its edges which :prevents ravelling and provides 'a smooth edge l'for the protector. 1

Another object of the invention is to provide a protector so shaped that it will cover the entire crotch portion of the garment and extend forwardly and rearwardly a greater distance than its width, the protector being of oval outline so that its end and side edge portions merge into each other and thus eliminate sharp corners which would be liable to wrinkle and cause irritation due to scratching.

Another object of the invention is to provide a protector which is very simple in construction, easy to apply or remove, and capable of being manufactured at low cost.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:

The garment shown in use in Figure -1 maybe formedof any suitable material and has a body i with leg extensions 2 and a crotch 3, it being understood that the leg extensions may be of "any lehgthdes'ired, ormerely leg openings, and *that --the garment may be underwear known as panties,shorts'or slacks for-sport wear, pantie girdles, -or -*oth'er well known garments of this type. Such garments often become soiled-along "the crotch portion before other portions need laundering; and absorption of perspiration, urine, and other excretion-s from "the uterus tend to *s'tain the crotch and cause the garment to be =unsanitary andhavean unpleasant odor-and become stiff and rough and cause scratching-which tendsto' irritatetheskin. "In order to prevent such absorption "and also to-cover seams in the-crotch portion of 'thegarment I have provided a sanitary protector 4 which is applied to the crotch portion of the garment and removably secured so that it may be easily removed for laundering and a new pro- ,tector or shield supplied. This protector is formed of fabric and has upper and lower layers or plies 5 and 6 formed from sheets of thin fabric such as cotton or other suitable material. The upper sheet or ply 5 which is disposed against the body is formed of material capable of absorbing perspiration or any discharge, and the impervious lower ply is formed of waterproofed fabric so that moisture absorbed by the upper sheet may not pass through the lower sheet and stain or otherwise soil the crotch portion 3 of the garment. of greater length than width, the width being substantially equal to cover the entire crotch portion of the garment, and marginal edges of the 50 two sheets are secured together by stitching 1 serving as a soft binding for the marginal edge of the protector.. Reinforcing tapes 8 are sewed smoothly against the under face of the lower sheet 6 in crossed relation to each other and against ends of these tapes are sewed fastener members 9 having studs for engaging in the sockets ll of the companion fastener members 12 sewed to the crotch portion 3 of the garment at such points that the protector fits smoothly against the crotch portion and will be prevented from wrinkling.

In relaxed condition of the garment, the protector has folds, in other words is larger than the area of the garment which it covers, but when the garment is on the wearer it is stretched so that the protector lies perfectly flat without wrinkles or creases. The two reinforcement strips extending in the two major or critical directions assist very materially in maintaining the garment and the protector in a perfectly fiat condition. This has certain distinct advantages, and particularly it prevents the continual stretching and contracting of the garment at the crotch when the wearer moves around and avoids therefore chafing and irritation; and also, by being maintained in a flat condition, it prevents the formation of wrinkles or creases which would cause irritation or have a tendency to enter depressions or openings in the body. As stated above, the reinforcement strips aid in maintaining the protector in flat condition when the gar-.

ment is being worn, and in this respect it will be noted that the two cross strips overlie one another at the central critical portion and the reinforced condition at this point helps to maintain the fiat condition.

By using snap fasteners the protector may be quickly and. very easily applied or removed and since it can be removed it may be washed and ironed in .a flattened condition. The fastener members 12 may be sewed directly to the crotch portion of the garment or they may be sewed to a tape i3 which is sewed to the crotch portion of the garment in such manner that it extends in an oval path and disposes the fastener members I2 in position for engagement by the companion fastener members 9 carried by the protector. Since the protector constitutes an accessory or attachment for the garment it will be understood that the protectors may be manufactured and sold separate from the garment,

and the fastener members l2 or the tape carrying the same sewed to a garment by a person purchasing the same.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

1. A garment having a body and leg openings and a crotch portion between the leg openings, a sanitary protector of soft fabric having an upper layer of absorbent material and a lower layer of waterproofed fabric, edge portions of the said layers being secured to each other, strips of fabric secured against the under face of the lower layer in crossed relation to each other, and serving to brace the protector against distortion longitudinally of the strips, fastener members carried by said strips, and companion fastener members carried by the crotch portion of the garment in position for engagement by the fastener members of the strips to detachably hold the protector in place in covering relation to the said crotch portion of the garment.

2. A sanitary protector of the character described comprising an upper layer of absorbent fabric, a lower layer of waterproofed fabric, stitching securing marginal portions of the layers together, tapes secured against the under surface of the lower layer in crossed relation to each other, and bracing the protector against distortion longitudinally of the tapes, and fastener members carried by the tapes at ends thereof for detachably securing the protector in covering relation to the crotch portion of a garment.
