1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a detachable upporting means for a pessary, and has for one of its objects the production of a simple and efficient supporting means which constitutes a handle and which may be easily attached to a conventional pessary for supporting the pessary in position.
A further object of this invention is the productlon of a simple and efficient pessary-supporting handle which will facilitate the placing of the pessary within the vaginal canal while gripping the handle outside the cavity.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will appear throughout the following specification and claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the pessary showing the detachable supporting handle in position;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the pessary and support, the walls of the vaginal canal being shown in section;
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on line 3--3 of Figure 1.
This application is directed to a species of invention canceled from my original application, upon which Patent Number 2,404,384 issued, July 23, 1946.
By referring to the drawing, it will be seen that l designates the pessary, which may be of any desired shape having a beaded rim H. A clamp 9 is detachably secured to the rim l I and preferably comprises two spaced clamping rim-engaging clips I2 which engage the rim ll of the pessary It], the rim being adapted to protrude between the clips I2, as shown in Figures 1 and 2 to provide a supporting flesh-engaging portion Hi.
The clips l2 are connected by a connecting bridge I4, as shown in Figure 1, which bridge is located near the rear of the clips I2. A protruding forwardly extending clamping tongue l projects forwardly and upwardly of the clips l2 and the pessary ID. The forward edge portion l3 of the rim II will constitute one jaw of a supporting clamp, while the clamping tongue l5 constltutes the opposing jaw of the clamp. A knob or enlarged portion I6 is preferably carried by the outer end of the tongue to facilitate the handling thereof.
It should be understood that the pessary illustrated may be used for holding a menstruation pad by placing the pad in the cup-like portion I! if desired, without departing from the spirit of the invention. If desired, the structure illustrated may be utilized for supporting any suitable article or element used for internal treatment of vital parts of the body within the vaginal canal, by placing the treating element in the cuplike portion of the pessary.
The clamp 9 may be formed of any suitable material such as rubber, vulcanized rubber, plastics, or stainless steel, or any material as might be found most convenient and suitable. The clamp 9 constitutes a substantially U-shaped member or supporting and gripping means for snugly engaging the body of the wearer. The jaws of the clamp fit directly in front and in rear of the pubic bone-see Figure 2thereby providing a substantially U-shaped pocket between the jaws for receiving the pubic bone and providing an efiicient support for the pessary. The outer end of the clamp 9 and the knob I5 provide means for facilitating the insertion and removal of the pessary and the fact that the clamp 9 is detachable will permit the attachment of the clamp of any conventional type of pessary having a beaded rim such as the rim ll.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
An appliance of the class described comprising a body, a detachable member engaging said body and having engaging clips gripping the body, the body protruding between the clips, and a clamp ing tongue carried by the detachable member protruding beyond the body and constituting a handle, the protruding portion of the body constituting one jaw of a clamp to engage the interior wall of the vaginal canal adjacent the inside of the opening of the canal behind the pubic bone and the clamping tongue constituting a companion jaw for engaging the outside of the opening in front of the pubic bone to provide a substantially U-shaped clamping supporting means.
