DEHORNING PASTE APPLICATOR Filed May 8, 194s AFm y l H1- TQRNKY Patented Jan. 6, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE l Oscar Gereke, Stockett, Mont. .Application May Y8, 1946, Serial No. 668,057
1 Claim.
1 This invention relates to devices for applying a dehorning paste to the horn buttons of calves vof from one day to three months or more of age, as referred to in my prior patent numbered 2,388,321, dated November 6, 1945, and over which 4 patent the present invention and application presents certain improvements. Dehorning Vpaste as used for the stated purposes are highly acid in content, and must be handled carefully in order to avoid burning the hands of the operator, in the process of applying the paste to the horn buttons of the calves.
In the said prior patent the operation of applying the dehorning paste in measured portions, depends upon the reciprocable action of the described plunger rod and plunger and the direct pressure of the operator's hand upon the handdisc thereof. It is the primary purpose of the present invention to substitute for the said direct hand pressure of the operator as means for ejecting the dehorning paste upon the horn button of the calf under treatment, the more powerful, efficient and accurate means of screw pressure for forcing the dehorning paste out upon the horn button, and which means affords a much more efficient mode of treatment.
Another object ofthe invention now presented is to provide convenient means for adapting the instrument comprising the subject matter of the present invention, for use upon horn buttons of relatively large or small size, as depending upon the age of the animal. y
With the stated objects in View, together with such other and additional objects and advantages as may appear from the specication,
attention is now directed to the accompanying drawing, constituting a part of this application, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevation of the implement, the subject matter of the invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a cross section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a detail View in perspective of an auxiliary attachment in the way of an enlarged applicator tip, for adapting the implement for use upon larger sized animals.
Figure 5 is a detail view in perspective of a closure cap for the implement when not in use.
Figure 6 is a sectional detail of the closure cap of Figure 5 as mounted upon theY delivery or applicator end of the implement.
Figure 7 is a sectional detail of the auxiliary and enlarged applicator tip as applied upon the delivery or applicator end of the implement.
The invention comprises a' cylinder, barrel or tube represented generally at 5, the same being provided with a screw-cap 5 at the upper end, and at the lower end with an applicator tip 1 mounting upon the lower end of the tube 5. This applicator tip 1 is pierced axially by a duct 8, which ends outwardly in a concaved cup 8a designed and adapted for seating upon and o ver the horn button of a calf. The outer reduced end of this tip 1 is provided with laterally extended and diametrically opposed locking studs 9,' for a purpose later to be described. An operating rod or shaft Ill, screw-threaded from end to end as shown, is extended axially through the tube 5, the upper end thereof being passed rotatably out through the cap 1 as indicated at ma and ending in a knurled disk II as means for rotating this shaft I0. The shaft I0 is operatively locked in place by means of a washer I2 keyed at I3 inside the cap 1. A feed plunger or follower head I4 is slidably seated Within the barrel or tube 5, and the operating shaft I0 is passed threadedly and centrally therethrough, as indicated at Ib. A guide-groove I5 is extended from end to end of the tube 5, along the inner wall thereof and in parallelism with the shaft I0, the plunger or head IG being provided with a guide n as at Ma for engaging this groove in a slidable manner and whereby the head I4 is prevented from any rotative action under the turning of the shaft I0. lThe I5 groove and guide fm 14a omitted if so desired, or if considered unnecessary.
An auxiliary applicator tip I6 is provided, in the shape of a ring as shown in Figure 4, the same being formed upon its opposite inner walls with bayonet slots or grooves IBa adapted for slidably receiving and holding the locking studs 9 of the applicator tip 1, and whereby this auxiliary ring I6 may be removably mounted upon the tip 1, for use as desired. It is to be noted that this auxiliary ring I6 is formed with a larger concaved cup 8b, designed and adapted for engaging and treating a horn button of an older or more developed calf. A closure cap I1, similarly slotted upon its inner walls as I1a is finally provided, the same being adapted for removably mounting upon the primary applicator tip 1, when the device is not in use.
In use the barrel or tube 5 is suitably filled with the dehorning paste by removing the cap 6, shaft II) and plunger or head I4 and then filling in the dehorning paste as required, the removed elements being then reinserted and the cap 6 screwed is embodied a cylinder for holding a dehorniiigf paste, an applicator tip for removablyvngounting upon the lower end of the cylinder, saidtipbeihg pierced axially by a duct ending outwardly "in-aconcaved cup of relatively reduced diameter adapted for seating over theV hornlbtt--ofa calf, the outer end of said tip being-provided with laterally extended yand diametrically'pposed locking studs, an auxiliary: applicator ytipping the form ofo riogodapoooiotits innoriono'oo ,nt-j or the `ii'rso; mentioned applicator. tio ohio' one If? med upon itsiposiieer,Wallzwih bayonet erbvfes fOr lokngly reevneahd lholdineih? seidioking studs of the appnator tip, theputeiy rendiof said auxiliaryring `being formed with a larger concaved cup forseating over a larger horn button of a calf, a closure cap of cupped formation and dimensioned to iit over the said first mentioned applicator tip, the said closure cap-'being slotted oppositely upon the inner faces rf its annular walls for lockingly engaging the said locking studs of the first mentioned applicator tip.
