Description

L I JONES Portable Bath Tub.
No. 243,573. Patented June 28,1881.
INVENTOR ATTORNEYS.
WITNESSES: MJ ZEz/fl N. PEYERS. Pmto-umoi her. W nhinglnn n c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LIZZIE I. JONES, OFTEXARKANA, ARKANSAS.
PORTABLE BATH-TUB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,573, dated June 28, 1881. Application filed Marches, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mrs. LIZZIE IRWIN JONES, of Texarkana, in the county of Miller and State of Arkansas, have invented a new Improvement in Portable Bath-Tubs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improvement, part being broken away. Fig. 2 is a side. elevation of the frame-work folded.
The object of this invention is to provide a convenient portable bath-tub which when not in use can he compactly folded.
The top frame of the bath-tub is made of suitable length and breadth, with rounded corners, and in two parts, A B, the plane of division being in the center of the side bars, as shown in Fig. 1. The adjacent ends of the side bars of the two framesA B are connected by strong hinges 0, so arranged that the two.
frames A B can be folded together downward, but cannot open upward farther than into line with each other.
To the under sides of the side bars of the frames A B, near-the bends or angles of the said frames, are hinged-the ends of two similarly-shaped frames, D E, in such a manner that the said frames D E can be opened outward a little beyond a perpendicular, as shown in Fig. 1, to form stablesupports for the frames A B. When the bath-tub is not in use the frames D E can be folded up against the under side of the frames A B, and the said frames A B then folded together outside the frames D E, as shown in Fig. 2.
The frame-work A B D E can be made of wood, metal, or other suitable material, and to the upper side of the frame A B are attached knobs F, upon which is buttoned theedge of the tub G. The tub G is designed to be made of canvas, having an enameled rubber coating upon the inside and painted upon the outside, or made water-proof in any other suitable manner; or the tub G can be made of any suitable water-proof flexible material.
To one end ofthe bottom of the tub G is at- 1 tiached a tube, H, of rubber or other suitable material, for convenience in drawingofl' the water, which tube, when the tub is in use, can
be hooked upon one of the handles, I, attached to the end bars of the frames A B.
To each side edge of the bottom of the tub G are attached two eyes or loops, J, for convenience in hanging up the tub Gr when notin use. When the bath-tub is made large the 5 5 hinged middle part may be strengthened by legs K, one at each side. The legs K are made wide, have their ends slightly beveled, and are pivoted at one corner of their upper ends to the side bars of one part, as B, of the top 0c frame, so that when the said legs K are slightly inclined to bring their lower ends squarely upon the floor, the other corners of their upper ends will rest against stops L, attached to the side bars of the other part,A, of the frame. The lower or free ends of the legs K are provided with hooks-M, to hook into eyes N attached to the sides of the part A of the frame, to keep the various parts of the framework'in place when folded.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the downwardly-folding sections A B, the inwardly-folding end 7 frames, D E, and the legsK, pivoted to one of the sections near their hinge-joint, to fold together as shown, and thus facilitate packing away and transportation.
2. In a portable bath-tub, the combination,
LIZZIE I. JONES. Witnesses:
L. A. BYRNE, RICHIE I. BARTLETTE.
