DOOR MAT WITH SCRAPER AND REMOVABLE BRUSH Filed Jan. 23, 1946 H TTOKMEX I parts.
Patented Feb. 17 1943 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE "DOOR MAT WITH 'SCRAPER AND REMOVABLE BRUSH Gustavo Del 'Peschio Liberatore, New 'York, N. Y. Applicationlanuary 23, 1946, SerialNo. .642.838 2 Claims. (01. 15-112) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in door mats.
More particularly, the invention proposes a new and improved doorrmatwhich is characterized by a flexible mat body having on its top face a plurality of spaced parallel upwardly directed scraper ribs, water draining grooves along the sides of said ribs, and brush receiving troughs to the sides of said grooves. It is proposed to provide brushes in said troughs which have holding elements along their sides engaging complementary holding elements along the sides of the troughs. Preferably, these holding elements are in .the nature :of .con- 'caved sides on one of the parts engaging complementary convexed sides on the other of the The invention proposes to provide the water draining grooves with drain apertures for the water to drain down and through the flexible mat body. It is also proposed to provide bottom drain grooves along the bottom face of :the flex-- ible mat body which communicate with said drain apertures for draining away water from the bottom of the door mat.
The invention also proposes to provide the ends of the brushes with beveled portions engaging complementary beveled recesses formed in the ends of the troughs.
It is also proposed to bevel the edges of the flexible mat body and to arrange the tops of the beveled portions substantially level with the tips of the scraper ribs and the ends of the bristles of the brushes.
Another object of the invention is to provide one or more rods engaging through apertures in the flexible mat body and transversely through apertures in said brushes for releasably holding the brushes in position within the troughs.
A novel means'is also proposed for releasably holding each rod or rods.
Another object of the invention is the con-' struction of an article as described, which is simpie and durable and which may be manufactured and. sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a. material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a door mat constructed in accordance with this invention.
. :wardly directed scraper ribs H.
Fig. .2 is a fragmentary enlarged detailed view of a portion fof Rig. .1.
.Fig. 3 is a iragmentary enlarged verticalsectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary enlarged vertical sectional-viewitaken on the line 4--4-of Fig. 1.
Fig. -5 is a fragmentary enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
The door .mat, in accordance with this invention, includes aiiexible mat body l-ll having on its top race a plurality of spaced parallel up- Water draining grooves 432 are disposed along the sides of the ribs H. ,Br-ush receiving troughs M are disposed to the sides of the grooves 12. Brushes 15 are mounted in the troughs l4 and are provided with holding elements 30 along their sides engaging complementary :holding elements along the sides of the troughs 14,. These holding elements 30 are in the nature of concaved sides on the brushes 1L5 engaged by convex-ed sides formed along the sides .of the troughs I4, see Figs. 3 and 4. I r
The water draining grooves 42 are provided with a plurality of drain apertures It extend-' ing down through the flexible mat body lit and connecting with bottom drain grooves H extending from end to end of the mat body. The ends of the brushes t5 are for-med with beveled .end portions I8 which engage complementary recesses l9 formed in the ends of the troughs it. The flexible mat body II] has beveled edge portions 20 along its sides and ends. The top edges of the beveled edge portions 20 are disposed substantially level with the tops of the scraper ribs l I and with the tips of the bristles of the brushes l5.
One or more rods 22 are engaged through apertures 23 formed in the flexible mat body It] and are also engaged transversely through aligning apertures 23' formed in said brushes I5. The rods 22 are associated with means by which'they are releasably held in position. This means includes a head 24 formed upon one of the ends of each rod 22. The heads '24 normally engage in limiting recesses 25 formed in the top faces of bosses 26 projecting from the beveled edge portions 28.
, At the ends of the mat, the beveled edge portions 2i) are formed with bosses 21 which are provided with finger engaging recesses 28 by which the door mat may be easily gripped and lifted.
The operation and use of the new and improved door mat may be understood from the following:
The door mat is placed in the usual way in The flexible mat body ma be constructed of rubber, or other flexible materials. The
brushes may also be constructed of rubber,
other flexible materials, or rigid materials, if this is desired. The rods 22 may be easily removed by pressing the bosses 26 downwards so as to free the heads 24 of the rods 22 from the limiting recesses 25. The rods 22 may now be pulled out. The brushes 15 are now free to be removed;
' The brushes I5 are held in position merely by the inter-engaging holding elements, the curved sides, alongthe sides of the brushes, as previously explained. They are also held in position by the beveled end portions I8. However, any brush 15 may be manually gripped and pulled out from its trough M. In this way worn out brushes 15 may be replaced.
While I have illustrated and described the pre-: ferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications com- 4 with said drain apertures, brushes mounted in said troughs, rods engaging through apertures in said flexible mat body and transversely through apertures in said brushes, said rods being provided with heads, and bosses upon said flexible beveled edge portions beneath said heads and having limiting recesses receiving said heads,
whereby when said edge portions are flexed said limiting recesses arehmoved clear of said heads and said rods are free to be withdrawn.
. 2. A removable brush door mat, comprising a flexible sheet-like mat body having flexible edge portionsalong its sides and brush receiving troughs, brushes mounted in said troughs, rods engaging through apertures in said flexible mat body and transversely through apertures in said brushesarid means for holding said rods from beingwithdrawn including limiting bosses on said flexible edge portions for engagement with the adjacent ends of saidrods, whereby said flexible edge portions may be flexed to move said limiting bosses free of the ends of said rods which may then be withdrawn.
