Description

` Aug. 3, 1948. E. ...BECKMAN 2,446,206
fra/eff 0r I Patented Aug. 3, 1948 oFF-ICE STRIKER PLATE FOR LOCKS Emil J. Beckman, Rockford, Ill. Application May 22, 1945, Serial' No. 595,118
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in striker plates for door locks, and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character in which the opening in the striker plate is provided for receiving the lock bolt and latch and embodies means for frictionally gripping the sides of the bolt or latch to firmly hold the same against play and looseness which usually causes rattling of the bolt in the opening of the striker plate.
More specifically, the invention embodies a striker plate in which the opening for receiving the door bolt and latch is formed at its side edges with inwardly projecting converging flanges inclined in a direction toward each other and between which the bolt and latch are received in snug fitting friction gripping relation whereby to retain the bolt and the latch against movement in the opening.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable in use, economical to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts, throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a door jamb with the striker plate embodying my invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a, sectional view taken substantially on a line 2-2 of Figure 1 and showing the latch bolt carried by the door engaged in the opening of the striker plate.
Figure 3 is a similar view taken on a line 3--3 of Figure 1 and showing the locking bolt carried by the door engaged in the opening in the striker plate.
Figure 4 is a rear elevational view of the striker plate.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates the door jamb having a recess 6 formed in its edge and with which the opening 'l of a, striker plate 8 registers, the striker plate 2 being secured to the edge of the door jamb by means of bolts or the like 9.
The opening 'l extends vertically in the striker plate B so as to receive the latch bolt I0 aswell as the locking bolt I I carried by the door I2.
The vertical edges of the opening 'I are formed with inwardly projecting anges I 3 which project into the recess 6, the flanges at the opposite edges of the opening being inclined in a direction toward each other, as indicated in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawing, in a converging direction and spaced from each other at their inner edges,
The flanges are adapted to frictionally engage the opposite sides of the latching bolt I0 as well as the opposite sides of the locking bolt I I to thus snugly engage said bolts to prevent lateral play of the bolts in the opening of the striker plate.
As indicated in Figure 4 of the drawing, the flanges I3 at their upper ends are inclined to a greater degree, as indicated at I4, than the lower ends of the flanges to compensate for the beveling I5 at one side of the latch bolt I0 and to thus insure a snug frictional engagement of the latch bolt with the flanges at the upper portion of the opening in the striker plate.
A wear plate I6 may also be attached to the edge of the door jamb 5 outwardly of the outer edge of the striker plate 8, as indicated in Fig` ure 1 of the drawing, and disposed in the path of the latch bolt I ll to prevent mutilation or wear to the edge of the door jamb. Ii' desired, the wear plate I6 may be formed as a lateral extension on the front edge of the striker plate 8, or may be constructed separately therefrom, as indicated in the drawing.
It is believed the details of construction, manner of use and advantages of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without 'further detailed explanation.
While I haveherein illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be apparent that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
A striker plate having a single, longitudinally extending opening adapted to receive both the latching bolt and the locking bolt of a door lock,
and a, pair of continuous flanges disposed one along each longitudinal edge of said opening and extending inwardly of said opening, said flanges being inclined relative to said plate with the portions thereof receiving said latching bolt inclined to a greater degree than the portions receiving said locking bolt to compensate for the difference in the shape of the latching and locking bolts.
