The means to-setthe clutch will now be de scribed. It is different from the meansin' the combination of the prior patent. Slidably resting on the bottom of the trough provided bypasing 16 is the cam shaped end of a lever 23, see Figs. 3 and 5. The cam face 24 is movable between the full and dotted. positions of. Fig. 3. In the former it holds lever arm I!) in position to permit prong I! to be removed from the clutch without binding. The adjacent corner of arml9 rests, with its spring pressure, on cam 24 as from the astop for such position. In the dotted lineposi-a tion cam 24 permits arm 19 to occupy its dotted line position or tend in that direction. This is the'position setting the clutch in condition to receive prong IT in a one-way movement, an
inward movement through the clutch casing. and toprevent an outward movement. Cam 24 is moved between or conditioned for its two functioning positions above stated, by moving lever 23 back and forth. And the lever 23 is part of a toggle mechanism to lock the cam 24 according to the toggle lock principle, in one position .or the other. a
This toggle mechanism consists. inv lever 23, pivoted to bell crank lever'25 at 26. Lever 25 is pivoted to plate 8 at 29. It is movable between stops 2'? and 28 provided as ears turned up from plate 8.- With lever 23 resting at one end on the bottom of the casing trough, spring pressed by arm f9 bearingon cam 24, the toggle mechanism is spring pressed toward either stop 21 or 28. 'It can be moved between stops by finger piece 3-0, see Fig. 4.
Considering the full line toggle position of Fig. 3, assume that the binder halves are pulled apart to fully separate plates I and 8 in the back por' tion. It will be seen that the ear H on the margin of plate 1 as it travels transversely of plate 8 will strike ear 3| on bell crank lever 25. This ear will be moved enough to move the toggle mechanism, for pivot 26 to cross the line between the outer bearing point of lever 23 and pivot 29. Then being spring pressed the toggle mechanism will move from Fig. 3.

For example, when the user moves finger piece 30 to unclutch the binder halves, and then pulls them apart he does not need to remember to reset the clutch mechanism when he reassembles the binder halves. is' so'because the action. of separating plates 1 and 8 results in resetting the clutch mechanism as just above described. This actuator for the clutch and its mode of operation adds-areal improvement in the operation of a binder such as shown. Everyone easily understands that the finger" piece 3| is used to unlock the"-'binder' for separation. But one will frequently forget or'no't readily see the necessity of vand .how toreset the mechanism when con- .60 across their toggle center line, and a mechanical structed as in my prior patent. Confusion then follows. But with the automatic operation of resetting as in the combination now disclosed, no confusion occurs in the full cycle of separating and reassembling the binder halves.
Having disclosed an improvement in the binder construction, I claim:
In a loose leaf binder construction ofthe kind employingoverlapping parts in the back-panel to adjust for binder thickness and a oneway spring clutch mounted on the middle portion of one of said overlapping parts, said clutch being adapted to cooperate with a prong carried by the other overlapping part toreleasably hold suchbinder parts in assembled position; the combination of a toggle mechanism mounted on'said part carrying the clutch, said toggle mechanism extending from a position of adjacency to the spring clutch outwardly to one end of the binder back and comprising an inner lever having a wedge surface'at its inner end formed to engage and release said spring clutch' 'from its coop'e'rating prong when said lever is moved to one of its toggle positionsfand an outer lever pivotally connected to the outer end of the first lever andextending to the adjacent end of the binder back said outer lever'being pivotally mounted between its ends on the clutch-carrying overlapping part, said outer lever cooperating to move andhold said first lever in clutch release position by toggle action when said outer lever is swung by hand to bring the pivotally connected ends of the levers finger mounted on that one of said overlapping parts not carrying the clutch in the back panel, said finger being positioned to engage the outer toggle lever and operate said toggle mechanism to withdraw the first lever from its clutch release position as the clutch. r
