Description

Patented Jan. 11, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Paul Owenby mam Owenby, Marietta, Ga., and "Joseph A.;Sacks, New York, N. Y. Application December 8, 1945,:S6li31N0. 633,694
This invention relates to garments, and refers. more particularly to garments covering the lower part of the human body, such as bathing trunks or pajama pants for men or women, womens panties, mens underwear shorts and manyothers.
One of the objects of the invention is the provision of an underwear garment which will give in a multiplicity of directions, thus eliminating crotch and thigh cutting and binding.
Another object of the invention is to provide a garment of the nature referred to which is made of a woven fabric and provided with ,a' knitted support or insert at the crotch portion thereof, said insert being stretchable in an upward direction to overcome any cutting or binding tendency due to any creeping or upward movement of such garment.
A further object of the invention is to provide such a garment with a rear knitted insert'to permit of lateral or circumferential stretchat the seat portion of the garment. 7
A still further object of the invention is to provide a pair of woven fabric shorts with knitted fabric inserts in the leg portionsthereof to permit give or stretch at the thighs below the crotch.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide such a garment with any or all of such inserts which will combine to produce a comfortable undergarment in which all tendencies to cut and bind will be eliminated. The stretchable inserts may be made of a knitted fabric, or of a woven fabric having elastic threads, or may be composed of a stretchable material, or be made stretchable in any other suitable manner.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the nature of the improvements is better understood, the invention consisting substantially in the novel arrangement and cO-relation of parts herein fully described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, and then finally pointed out and specifically defined and indicated in the appended claim.
The disclosure made the basis of exemplifying the present inventive'concept suggests a practical embodiment thereof, but the invention is not to be restricted to the exactdetails of this disclosure, and the latter, therefore, is to be understood from an illustrative, rather than a restrictive standpoint.
In carrying out a preferred form of the invention it was found desirable to construct a pair of shorts with a rear insert stretchable circumferentially of the seat of the wearer and a crotch in- '1 claim. 1 (01. 2-224) sert secured to the bottom of said rear insert and. extending for a short distance upwardly at the front to form an upwardly stretchable crotch support. It was further found desirable to attach to the said crotch support leg inserts stretchable -transversely or circumferentially of the thighs.
' In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view looking from the front of a pair of shorts made in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention; v
*Figure' 2 is a perspective view looking from the rear thereof; V p
' Figure 3 is a rear elevational view of a modified form of the invention and I Figures 4 and'5 are similar views to Fig. 3 of further modified forms of the invention.
Figure 6 is a front view of the shorts shown in Figure 5;
Referring now to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings in detail, the numeral I'll indicates a truncated garment made of any suitable material, such as for instance cotton, rayon, wool, nylon, silk, etc., etc. The said garment may be a pair of shorts as shown, either regular or of the boxer type or may be in the form of a pair of pajama pants. Inasmuch as the invention is applicable to any truncated garment it is not deemed necessary to illustrate all of such forms.
The said garment may be provided with a belt portion I I made of any suitable material, such as for instance elastic webbing. The said garment may further comprise a front body portion I2, and a rear body portion I3, the front body portion being provided with a closure or fly It. The said fly may be closed by means of snap fasteners I! or may be provided instead with buttons or separable fasteners such as zippers. Said fastening means however form no part of this invention and is optional. v
At the rear or seat portion of the garment Ill there is provided an insert I8 preferably made of a knitted fabric and transversely stretchable as indicated by the double arrow l9 Fig. 2. The material constituting this insert I8 may be of all fabric threads or may include interspersed elestic threads, the only essential feature thereof being the transverse stretchability thereof. The said insert I8 may be secured to the belt I I by a row of stitches 20 and to the rear body portionby rows of stitches 2| and 22.
Secured to the bottom of the rear or seat insert I8 by a row of stitches 24 is a crotch insert 23 which is also secured to the front of the leg portions by stitching 25. A leg insert 32 is secured to each of the legs l4 and H: by rows of stitches 2G and 21 and to the crotch insert by rows of stitches 28 and 29.
The crotch insert 23 is stretchable lengthwise or in an up and down direc ion as indicated by the double arrows 30 and Si, Figs. 1 and 2, and the inserts 32 are stretchable transversely or circumferentially of the thigh or leg portions as indicated by 'tl'ie arrows-33 and 34,--Fig. 2.
It will be seen that with the above construction, stretch in the various parts of the garment is provided where and in a direction most desirable,
all of the inserts cooperating to produce a pair of shorts or the like which will give: imaivariety of directions and thus conform to all of the positions the body will assume either w-hilethe weareris sitting or when he is either'bend'ing or otherwise actively engaged.
In Fig. 3, there is shown a modified form of h the invention wherein,v but a. single insert-354s secured to theshorts 1.00,: The: saichinsert- 35 comprises a rear. portionififi-and a crotch portion 13lwhich: extends: upwardly. at the front .011 the shorts. Intthis formhthe give or. stretch of the insertis laterallythroughoutasindicated by the. double arrow 38. If desirable instead of a iront fly, the shorts may be provided-phone or both sides. thereof with. a separablefastener 3.9.
In the Figure 4 modification, the leg inserts. L
to the shorts, the said insert comprisingqa of rear arms 42 and a frontal and. crotchv portion 43 the portion 44. intermediatethe arms. o1:v ex.- tension 4'2 may. be iotthe sameiwoven material as. the body of. the shorts. lll'bl Although theleg. inserts are" shown as omittedi theymay. bead'dedf 4 if desired. In this form the stretch or give will be as indicated by the arrows 44a, 45 and 46.
It is to be understood that any desired combination of inserts may be had, as for instance by adding the leg inserts to the Figure 5 form of the invention, or making the crotch insert of the same piece as the bifurcated insert and placing same so as to have a lateral give or stretch, Many other variations and modifications may be made within the scope-of the present invention.
What is claimed is:
. A garment, comprising a non-stretchable woven body portion having two leg openings, a knitted insert connected to said body portion at the rear vol; said. garment. andstretchable in the longitudina'l direction; said insert extending the full length. at the rear. of said garment, a knitted crotch portion extending from the seat portion between said leg openings of the garment to a point at the front of the garment and secured to saitfinbodmpention-oand. said--'insert, said crotch portion. being? stretchable 1 in' the transverse direc-- tion;;and.ztransversely stretchable leg inserts. secured to'said'crotchportion andsaid body portion and: extending betweensaidleg. openings and said crotch: portion;
