CLOTH CLIP Filed June 9, 1947 3 G, W P z Patentecl Jan. 18, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CLOTH CLIP Robert A. Bellamy, Oklahoma City, Okla.

5 Claims.
This invention relates to cloth holding clamps and is directed particularly to improvements in clamps or securing devices designed for use 1n holding a press cloth in position upon the presser face of the presser head of a pressing or ironing machine.
Clamps or holding devices of the character at present employed are not entirely satisfactory for the reason that they will frequently release the edge of the cloth when any unusual pull is applied I thereto or if the clamp should be struck or bumped by the operator or in any other manner.
An object of the present invention is to provide a clamp which is designed in a novel manner which will prevent any accidental releasing of the cloth and which requires the application of force in two successively applied directions in order to open or disengage the clamp for the release of the cloth.
Another object of the invention is to provide a clamp of the character above described which will function satisfactorily to secure the cloth tightly in position but which, at the same time, is designed in a simple manner so that it may be easily and quickly manipulated for opening or closing as desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a clamp of the character stated which is adapted to be applied or secured to the usual apertured metal band which encircles and engages the periphery of the pad carrying board of the pressing machine head.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of the specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not to be understood as limited to the exact details of construction shown and described since obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
, In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a portion of a pressing machine head showing mounted thereon a cloth securing clamp constructed in accordance with the present invention, the cloth being removed or broken away from its position over the clamp and the band to more clearly show the structure of the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1 showing the cloth secured in position.
Figure 3 is a sectional view corresponding to Figure 2 but showing the cloth securing band open and the edge of the cloth partly encircling the holding jaw of the clamp.
Figure 4 is a view looking at the clamp from the outer side with the movable jaw broken away to show the shiftable hinge plate attached to the body plate of the clamp.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing the numeral 10 generally designates a portion of the movable top or head part of a pressing machine which part includes a solid body or board I I upon the underside of which is secured the press pad l2.
The numeral 13 generally designates a metal band which is placed around the edge of the board body II and secured thereto and to which band are secured a number of the cloth holding or clamping members such as constitute the present invention. One only of such clamping members is here illustrated and generally designated id but it will be understood by those versed in the art that a number of such cloth clamps or securing devices will be mounted upon the metal band l3 around the periphery of the board ll, use being made for mounting the clamps, of apertures l5 which are formedin the band I3 at closely spaced intervals as shown in Figures 1 and 4.
The cover clip or clamp !4 comprises a body plate I6 which is designed to be positioned vertically across the outer side of the press band l3, in the manner shown most clearly in Figures 2 and 3. This body plate has a portion of its bottom edge turned up to form the flange l1 and the lower edge of the band It is tightly held between this flange and the outer side of the body plate.
A portion of the top end of the body plate I6 is turned in opposed relation with the flange IT, to engage over the top edge of the band as shown in Figures ,2 and 3, this flange l8 projecting inwardly and downwardly as shown to form a fixed jaw with which the hereinafter described movable jaw cooperates to hold the edge of the cover cloth l9 in position. This cover cloth is drawn tightly across the face of the pad l2 and the edge of the cloth is pulled up across the edge of the pad and of the body II and drawn inwardly, in the manner hereinafter described, so that the cloth will be tightly maintained in position. Maintenance of the cloth tightly in such position is accom plished by the clamps or clips forming the present invention.
The body plate is disposed against the band l3 to cover one of the openings l5 and the body plate is provided with an opening 20 through which is passed a securing element, here shown as in the form of a rivet 2!, the head portion 22 of such rivet being disposed at the outer side of the body plate while the split shank of the rivet passes inwardly through the aperture l5 of the band and the two portions of the shank are turned over to engage the inner side of the band and thus maintain the rivet in place.
The holding or securing element 2| maintains in position against the outer face of the body plate It, a hinge plate 23. This hinge plate lies between the two side flanges or wings 24 which form an integral part of the body plate and expasses, the head of the securing element being positioned against the outer side of the hinge plate whereby the hinge plate is permitted limited up and down movement with respect to the body plate, a relatively long jaw plate, hinge coupling means between an end edge of the jaw plate and the bottom edge of the hinge plate facilitating swinging the jaw plate upwardly and inwardly toward the body plate, a jaw member formed across the opposite end of the jaw plate and designed for extension across said jaw flange when the hinge plate is shifted upwardly to a predetermined position, and a turned under lip forming an integral part of said jaw member and adapted for engagement with the underside of the jaw flange when the jaw plate and hinge plate are reversely shifted after the jaw member is disposed across the jaw flange.
5. A clasp of the character stated in claim 4,
with a spring element coupling the jaw plate and hinge plate together at said hinge connecting means and normally urging oscillation of the jaw plate away from the hinge plate.
