Description

March 8, 1949. A. GRUDDA LOG OR POST CABIN STRUCTURE Filed Sept. 16, 1946 INVENTOR.

Patented Mar. 8, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LOG R POST CABIN STRUCTURE August Grudda, Milwaukee, Wis.
Application September 16, 1946, Serial No. 697,264
1 Claim. 1
My invention refers to log cabin construction of the vertical type.
The object of my invention is to provide semifinished spaced logs having companion pairs of longitudinally disposed grooves intermediate their inner and outer faces and similar corner grooves, both sets of grooves being fitted with panels whereby a dead air space is developed forming a Weatherproof seal to thoroughly insulate the building.
A further object of my invention is to provide the skived sides of the log with grooves for the reception of panels and a second set of panels fitted to the inner skived faces of the logs with the inner faces of the offset panels in abutting engagement with a coating of any suitable material whereby two sets of dead air spaces are developed.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter described, and more particularly defined by the appended claim, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawings is illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of the present invention constructed according to the best mode so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 represents a cross section of a log cabin wall embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of one of the logs.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of another form of my invention wherein countersunk panels and skived faces of the logs form a finished wall.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of these modified forms of logs.
Referring by characters to the drawings, l--l indicates logs or posts having their sides and inner faces 2 finished or skived and also their bottom faces 2', whereby sharp corner angles are developed. The outer faces are in the rough for more artistic appearance.
The bottom faces 2, adjacent to the corners, are provided with narrow channels 3-3, which channels are sealed by longitudinally disposed panels 44 that are suitably secured and lapped over the bottom skived faces of the logs whereby air sealed pockets are developed with reference to the channels 3.
The pairs of logs are each provided with longitudinally disposed grooves 5, which grooves are positioned intermediate the inner and outer faces of the logs.
Fitted into and secured in these sets of grooves are panels 66, it being understood that the side 2 walls of the vertically disposed logs are suitably spaced apart. Thus it will be noted that a dead air space is formed between each pair of logs to insure proper insulation.
In this exemplific-ation of my invention, the inner offset panels 4--4 have secured thereto a plaster coating 1, which forms a finish for the interior of the building and said coating, in conjunction with the panels 4, also forms a second set of dead air spaces, as illustrated in Figure l of the drawings.
Figure 3 illustrates another form of my invention wherein the inner corners of the logs are provided with longitudinally disposed right angle grooves 88 into which are secured the vertically disposed panels 4, the same being flush with the inner bottom skived faces 2 of the logs. These flush panels 4', as noted, are spaced from. the panels 66 to form dead air spaces and it is understood that one face of the right angle grooves 8 may also be provided with air channels 3'.
By this simply constructed wall, it will be noted that the inner face of the same may form a finished interior surface for the building, the said finished surface being composed of the flush faces of the panels 4 and faces 2' of the logs.
From the foregoing description it is apparent that my improved log construction is so assembled and paneled that it may be built even by those unskilled in the art and when so constructed it will provide a solid insulated wall to resist all weather conditions.
I claim:
A building unit comprising vertically disposed pairs of spaced logs skived upon their sides and inner faces, alined longitudinally disposed grooves in the sides of the logs intermediate their inner and outer faces, right angle grooves extending throughout the length of the logs at their inner corners, panels fitted into the intermediate and corner log grooves forming a dead air space therebetween, the corner panels being flush with the inner skived log faces, whereby a smooth inner wall results.
AUGUST GRUDDA.
