PORTABLE FOLDABLE SEAT Filed Oct. 31,1946

Patented Apr. 5, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PORTABLE FOLDABLE SEAT Ole Bjornskaa s, Duluth, Minn.
Application October 31, 1946, Serial No. 706,869
This invention relates to portable foldable seats and has special reference to novel accessories for such a seat with the main objects in view of providing a more practical, durable and-conveniently carried seat of this type especially for use by sportsmen in hunting, fishing or the like, though obviously by others and under varying circumstances.
Another important object is to provide a more dependable and compact engaging means at the front corners of the lower-most member of the foldable seat for engagement with another fixed seat as of a boat, bench, or the like. This novel engaging means is further characterized by being made to not only snugly hold the two halves of the seat together when folded but also fit tightly against the sides of same and over the opposed edges of the back to eliminate any annoying projections during the carrying about of same.
Other objects and advantages may appear in the further description of the invention.
In the drawing forming part of this application:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the improved portable seat as applied to a common boat or bench seat.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmental erspective view of one of the hinge connections of the seat and back portions of the device, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one corner of the seat as it appears folded.
The main supporting member I of the device is of suitable rigid material such as metal and/or wood with the relatively narrow angularly turned up rigid back-wall portion 2.
This wall strip 2 is inclined slightly backwardly as shown, preferably at substantially the same angle to the seat portion as the major back portion assumes when in open position as shown in Fig. 1.
The strip or flange portion 2 also carries fixed thereto the portion 3 of the two hinges, the cooperating half being indicated at 4, see Fig. 2. The hinges support the back of the seat and for which purpose they are fixed to the principal sustaining member 5 of the back of the device.
Each of the hinged members 4 has fixed to or integral therewith a protruding extension 6 for supporting engagement when contacting the somewhat similar extension 7 upon the member 3 of each hinge as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, thus providing a substantial dependable support for the back portion.
At each of the two opposite front edge portions 5 Claims. (01. 155-133) of the seat member I is hingedly fixed as at 8 a combined keeper and bracket-like member 9 for spanning the outer edge of a common board-like seat as suggested at It! in Fig. 1 or as dependable keepers for the two partsof the portable seat as shown in Fig. 3.
For proper functioning in this latter office these hinged or pivoted brackets 9 are not only cut out as at l l for spanning engagement of a board-like seat, but are of L-shape in front elevational view when so acting, and the free angular portion I2 of each is slightly arcuate, elongated and serrated or corrugated longitudinally for firm holding together of the two portions of the device when folded'as seen in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
To insure such holding or keeper functioning, an added feature occurs in providing the area longitudinally of the two opposed front edges of the sustaining member 5 in the path of the free end of each bracket when closed, with an angle bearing plate l3 fixed to the upper marginal corner of the member 5.
These angular bearing plates are corrugated to substantial locking engagement with the free ends of the brackets when brought into engagement thereover as shown in Fig. 3.
Such simple, adequate holding and locking means for a portable folding seat with no objectionable protruding parts whatever is deemed novel in the art and the elongated neat-fitting handle [4 fixed to the front edge of the heavier seat portion and the lighter edge of the neat package is transportable in the most convenient manner possible.
In as much as a seat of this type is admirably adapted to maritime usage the adaptability of same as a life preserver must not be overlooked and when intended for such use, the cushions of the two parts of the unit may be of the pneumatic type and thus provide a new attribute to the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a foldable seat of the type described having hingedly united back and seat members for application to a board-like seat, said back and seat members being constructed with rigid reenforcing members and having cushions thereupon; combined means for holding the device in firm engagement with said board-like seat and holding said foldable seat in a firm compact package when folded comprising, an angle bearing plate fixed adjacent each front corner of said back member, a hinged member adjacent each front corner of said seat member having one end thereof pivotally attached to the rigid member of said seat, and one side thereof cut-out intermediate of the pivot point and the opposite end for spanning engagement of said board-like seat, and having its lower end bent at right angles to appear L-shaped in front elevational view for engagement with said angle bearing plate in looking said back in folded position.
2. A combined packaging and seat engaging bracket for a portable folding seat comprising a swingable member for pivotal engagement to the seat member of said foldable seat appearing as of L-shape in front elevational view when depending from said seat for overlapping engage ment with the adjacent edge of the back member of said foldable seat when packaged for transportation, and with cut-away body portion from the rearmost edge thereof for straddling engagement of a fixed seat when applied thereto.
3. In a foldable seat of the type described having hingedly united back and seat members for application to a board-like seat, said back and seat members being constructed with rigid reenforcing members and having cushions thereupon; comprising, an angle bearing plate carried upon the forward portion of each side of said back member, a bracket member hingedly carried on the forward portion of each side of said seat member having its outer end bent to appear L- shaped in front elevational view, a cut-away portion intermediate of said attachment and said bend opening rearwardly for spanning engagement with said board-like seat, characterized by said bearing plate and said bracket having registerable corrugations for firm engagement with each other in holding said seat in a compact package when folded.
4. In a foldable seat for application to a boardlike seat, said seat having hingedly'united back and seat members, a bracket member hingedly carried on the forward portion of each side of said seat member, a bearing plate carried on the corresponding portions of said back member, said brackets having their outer ends bent to appear L-shaped in front elevational view whereby said bent outer ends may overlap and engage said bearing plates when said back member is folded against said seat member to hold said members in folded relation, andsaid bracket having a cutaway portion open rearwardly intermediate of the hinged connection to said seat member and said bent end for spanning engagement of an edge of said board-like seat.
5. In a foldable seat for application to a boardlike seat, said seat having hingedly united back and seat members, a bracket member hingedly carried on the forward portion of each side of said seat member, said brackets having their outer ends bent to appear L-shaped in front elevational view whereby said bent outer ends may overlap a portion of said back member when the latter is folded against said seat member to hold said members in folded relation, and said bracket having a cut-away portion open rearwardly intermediate of said bent end and the hinged connection to said seat member for spanning engagement of an edge of said board-like seat.
