This invention relates generallyto animplemer t for removing paper fasteners and to such devices as are designed to remove the ordinary wire staples used to attach several sheets of paper together, being more particularly animprovement on the device shown in my United States Letters Patent No. 2,215,662, issued to me on September 24, 1940.
In the form of device shown in my patent no provision is made for retainingthe staple in the device until the staple has been wholly removed from the; papers to which it is attached and unless such device is accurately made and care exercised in using the deviceit sometimes happens that only one side of the staple is wholly removed, necessitating the final removal of the staple by hand, while in other instances the staple will fly away from the paper and possibly strike the person using the device.
To overcome these undesirable features of the device I have provided a clamping member which engages the bridge of the staple and which holds the staple firmly in the device until the operation of removing the staple has been entirely completed. I
It is a primary object of the present inventionto provide a staple remover of simple form, light in weight, inexpensive'and manually operable w-hich is provided with a simple form of clamping device for holding the staple during the operation of removing the staple.
It is also an object of my invention to provide a staple remover of simple form and construction which may be used upon staples ofdifferent sizes. It is also an object of my invention to provide a simple form of staple remover which will not injure the papers during the removal of the staples therefrom.
Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter from the following description and drawings.
Referring to the drawings, which are for illustrative purposes only:
Fig. 1 is an enlarged side elevation of a staple remover embodying myinvention shown in operative relation to a staple and two sheets-of material;

Referring more particularly to the drawings, reference numeral [I generally indicates the device shown in position on two sheets of material, such as paper, indicated at H and through which the staple [3 extends. v V
To facilitate illustration of the staple remover the device has been shown slightly larger than normal size as is also the staple and sheets of paper. The staples upon which the device is designed to operate include the common wire staple of U-shape, the ends of which when clamped on the sheets of paper fold inwardly against the lowermost sheet of material.
The staple remover comprises a primary member M which has a base portion I5 and a handle portion 16. The base portion is flat and the handle portion extends upwardly and rearwardly therefrom substantially in the form of an arch. In the form of the invention shown the primary member I4 is formed of a single metal strip which has been cut to the desired pattern and bent to provide upwardly extending side portions or cars I8. In the region of the handle portion .the sides have been bent back upon the main body of the member as at [9 in order to provide a flat handle with rounded side edges.
The base portion [5 of the primary member I 4 is provided with an aperture or cut-out portion 20? for the purposes more fully hereinafter described.
The forward fiat end of the base portion,l5 constitutes what may be termed a toe 2|, the inner portion 22 of which is of correct width to slip under the bridge portion of the ordinary staple. This inner portion terminates forwardly in a reduced or narrow portion indicated at 23 which is of correct width to slip under staples of smaller size, this narrow portion being bevelled as indicated at 24 to facilitate the insertion of the toe under the staple.
At the juncture of the narrow portion with the inner portion of the tongue, shoulders 26 are provided which, when the device is used for removing small staples, acts as a stop against which such staples engage.
A secondary member generally indicated by the numeral 30 is pivotally mounted on the primary member by means of a. pin 3| which extends through ear 32 formed on the sideportion 3 33 of said memberand through the ears I8 the primary member. Preferably the member 30 is formed of a single sheet of metal which has been cut to the desired shape and bent to form the side portions '32 and the ear 33 through which the pin 3| extends. V
At its outer or forward end the secondary member 30 is provided with what will be termed a tongue portion 34, which is adapted to beac eomd hyfihe rture or cutaway no t bnifl the toe portion of the primary member M. In
the form of the invention shown this tongue por 7 tion 34 is bent at an angle to the main body of the member 30, as is best illustrated in' Figs. 1 and 2, and is adapted to fit flush within the base member. It has been pointed out that the toe portion of the primary member is shaped to accommodate the large size staple and alsoa staple of smaller size, and the tongue 34 on the secondary member is likewise shaped; in other words, i
