Description

1949 L.'L,. RECKLER LUBRICANT HOLDER FOR SPORTSMEN Filed Feb. 24, 1947 INVENTOR. .L.L. Recklez" Patented Dec. 6, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,490,6b LUBRICANT across For: srcn'crsims Laurence L. Reckler, Sparks, Nev. V Application February 24, 1947, Serial No. 730,436
, 2 Claims. 1
This invention relates in general to a sportsmans device, especially for fishermen.
The invention is directed in particular to, and it is an object to provide, a lubricant dispenser for fishermen, such dispenser being adapted to provide a clean, accessible, convenient, non-leak, and drip-proof source of lubricant for dressing dry flies or lines, and for general sportsmens use, such as the lubrication of reels, guns, etc.
Another object of the inventibn is to provide a lubricant dispenser as above", which is small size, portable, ever-ready, and contains an ample supply of lubricant; the device including a novel reservoir and pad arrangement whereby the pad, which is exposed, is maintained saturated for use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lubricant dispenser, for the purpose described, which is adapted to be suspended from the users belt or clothing, or from the fishing creel or other gear; said device including a container having a removable lid which is formed with a central opening which exposes, for one hand or fingertip access, a lubricant saturated pad in the container.
An additional object of the present invention is to provide a lubricant dispenser, as in the preceding paragraph, wherein the pad is protected by the lid against soiling engagement with clothing or the like against which the lid may rest; the lid being formed so that the pad, while exposed for access, is nevertheless recessed in the container at all times.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive sportsmans device, and one which will be exceedingly effective for the purpose for which it is designed.
These objects are accomplished by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device ready for use.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section of the device.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the sportsmans device which is the subject of this invention is a lubricant dispenser comprising a relatively shallow circular container l including a screw-on type lid 2, the cooperating threads being shown at 3.
The lubricant dispenser is adapted to be suspended from the fishermans belt, clothing, fishing creel, or ther. ear. by means or a snap hook glpivotally connected, as at 5, to the container I? the pivot extending between a pair of spaced apart, radially projecting ears 6 on said container at the top thereof. 4 I
The lid 2 is formed with a relatively large=di= ameter, circular, access epeni'ng' 1 centrallythere= in. Said opening is'defin'ed by an annular lange 8 which projects axially'inwa'rdly into the con; tainer so me distance relative to the inner face or sai'd, lid whereby to form annular reservan 9 in said lid radially outwardly er said names.
A circular, wool pad I0 is disposed in the container l and is of such thickness that the annular flange 8 engages said pad adjacent but short of the periphery of the latter in hold-down relation. The thickness of the pad is such that the face H of the portion exposed in the access opening I is disposed inwardly or short of the outer end of said opening, whereby when the device is in use the face II will not make soiling engagement with clothing, etc. The pad H] is mounted on a relatively stiff backing sheet I3 to maintain the pad in extended position within the container to assure that the face II will not protrude beyond the confines of the opening 1.
At its periphery the wool pad I0 is of a thickness such that it does not fill the annular reservoir 9, whereby such reservoir is open, as shown.
When the device is in use, the wool pad I0 is saturated with a lubricant, which is of a semisolid consistency, yet capable of penetrating through the pad I0 at relatively warm temperatures. An additional supply of such semi-solid lubricant is maintained in the annular reservoir 9; there being a gasket I2 between the lid 2 and. container l to removably seal these parts together.
When the above described device is in use by a fisherman, it is carried or suspended in the manner previously described. To apply lubricant to a dry fly a finger is wiped across the exposed face of the pad [0 in the circular access opening 1; the lubricant adhering to the finger in a quantity sufficiently to properly treat a dry fly. Under some circumstances it may be desirable to make direct wiping engagement of the fly with the pad face I I To lubricate a fishing line, the line is drawn across the face H; such line being held in the access opening 1 with one of the fishermans fingers.
By reason of the described construction of the device it is most convenient in use, and such device contains an adequate supply of lubricant for 3 many months use; the wool pad I 0 being initially saturated. Also, as: the lubricant is used from the pad I0, a replacing supply feeds, or is attracted, into the pad from the annular reservoir 9, which feeding can be accelerated by slightly warming the device, so that the lubricant transfers more readily.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that there has been produced such a device as substantially fulfills the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, the following is claimed as new and useful, and upon which Letters Patent are desired:
1. A lubricant dispenser comprising a relatively shallow, circular container including a lid having a central, circular opening therein, said opening being defined by an annular flange of substantial depth, and a lubricant pad in the container, the inner edge of the flange bearing against the pad adjacent its periphery, the pad extending into the opening defined by said flange and having an exposed face disposed short of the outer end of said opening.
2. A lubricant holder comprising a container including a bottom and sides, a lid mounted on 4 the container and including sides extending outwardly from the sides of the container and in substantial alinement therewith, the lid being provided with a substantially central opening, an inwardly projecting flange formed on the lid about the opening and providing a channel between the flange and the sides of the container and lid to a point just below the top of the container, a relatively stifi lubricant absorbent pad, such pad including one portion substantially filling the container and projecting part way into said channel and another portion projecting into the central opening defined by the flange to a point adjacent but terminating short of the outer end of said opening.
