Application January 9, 1948, Serial No. 1,362
The present invention relates to a disposable bag which is adapted to be used by bedridden patients in lieu of the customary inconvenient and diflicult to employ bedpan.
Disposable bags for collection of human excreta and liquids are not, obviously, new. As a matter of fact, I hold a patent on just such a bag. The patent in question is identified as 2,337,648 and is dated December 28, 1943.
Briefly the patented bag is a temporarily usable collector for human excreta and is of general V-shaped formation and is made up of acidproof fabric or equivalent material and includes a tapered receptacle portion and an apron-like extension forming a V-shaped flap which projects beyond the mouth of the bag and which is adapted to underlie the back of the user, and also has loop-like handles which are provided for utilizing the bag.
More specifically, the patent has to do with a sick bed appliance which as a combination arrangement embodies a temporarily usable and disposable human excreta bag, said bag being of general V-shaped formation and made up of acid-proof fabric and including a tapered receptacle portion and a flap extending beyond the mouth of the receptacle portion and there being a pair of handle forming loops connected to the front Wall of the receptacle portion and adjacent edge portions of the back flap. Then, too, there is provided a complemental cushioned body hoisting and positioning pad which is disposed in the same plane as the bag and is also in longitudinal alignment with the bag, said pad being of general wedge-shaped form and having finger tabs, whereby to facilitate drawing it in between the bed and the patient by a single attendant. The pad serves to elevate the body and serves to hold the flap in an inclined position where it functions as a chute to deliver accumulations into the bag with requisite comfort and convenience.
In carrying out the principles of the instant invention I find it advisable to continue to use the elevating pad. I have improved primarily on the construction of the disposable bag and this is novel in that it has a more satisfactorily shaped back and chute forming flap and said flap is provided with ties which are adapted to be connected together over the abdomen of the user to assist in holding the flap and receptacle portion of the bag in place.
Another object of the invention is to provide a disposable bag with a receptacle portion and back-flap and tying tapes or the like, the bag 3 Claims. (Cl. 128-283) 2 being so shaped that portions thereof fit between the legs of the user in order to conform to this area and to the buttocks, there being on the front or top Wall of the receptacle portion an additional appendage which extends up over the abdomen and constitutes a protective shield and the free end thereof is held down and against displacement by the ties.
Another object of the invention is to provide a disposable bag of the type stated which is susceptible of being struck out from an economical blank and readily fashioned to provide the front and back flaps and tying tapes.
Other objects and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a disposable bag constructed in accordance with the invention showing the manner in which same is utilized by a bedridden patient;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of said bag ready for use;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal side or edge View of the bag showing the relationship of the parts thereof to parts of the anatomy of the user, the latter phases being depicted in dotted lines;
Figure 4 is a cross section on the line 4-4 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a plan view of the blank of acidproof material or water-proof paper stock from which the bag is fashioned.
It is perhaps best to start out on the detailed description by making reference to the blank of material from which \the bag is made up. All sorts of materials of different textures have been tried and it is not the purpose of the present invention to attempt to disclose the precise material which will be employed. It will probably be of paper weight so that it will be light and capable of being folded into compact form and stored in boxes for ready use in hospitalized and home confinement cases. The blank is generally diamondshaped in outline when lying flat 'as shown in Figure 5. One corner is rounded, as at 6 and angular slots or slits are out through marginal edge portoins adjacent other corners as at the points I. In addition and inwardly of the slits. I provide struck-out openings 8 of the approximate shape and proportions illustrated and these coact to define a pair of extensions 9. Utilizing the features described and employing the imaginary line ID as a fold line, the main portion of the blank may be said to embody triangular halfportions II and i2. By thus folding the parts together and overlapping and gluing marginal edge portions as shown at I3, the thus folded portion becomes a substantially conical collection receptacle or bag A. The portion identified by the numeral I4 constitutes an apron-like part which may be described conveniently as a back flap. This back flap is in turn provided with relatively narrow .band portions Ma which functionwa's tyin straps. The free ends of the straps are adapted to be tied into a bow as at 15 in Figure 1. The two extensions 9 when they come together and are glued define an abdominal shield-I6. This shield is of sufiicient length that the free'end thereof underlies the connected straps to assist in keeping the shield up and in place. It follows that by having a conical receptacle which fits in between the legs, by having a-back flap .fitting up.
and over the buttocks and extending well along the back, by having a front abdominal shield, by-
cutting apertures to fit around and conform to the contacting portions Of the legs, and byrprovi-ding straps, thebag' is virtuall strapped to the user. The back flap functions as a chute for-human excreta when it is in use and the front shield also serves to direct urine into the-receptacle. The bag and accompanying portions are such as to be usable by male and female users.
The numeral l1 designates a bed and [8 the wedge shaped elevating pad which in this instance is employed the same as in the previous patent, that is it serves to elevate the back of the user and facilitates properusage of the'back flap as a chute, and prevents collapsingof the bag, etc.
A careful consideration of the foregoing description in conjunction wiaththe invention as illustrated in thedra-wings will enable the reader to obtain a clear understanding and impression of the alleged features of merit-and novelty sulficient to clarify the constructionofthe invention as hereinafter claimed.
Minor changes in'shape, size, materials and rearrangement of parts-may be resorted to in actual practice so long as no departureis made from the invention as claimed.
Having described the claimed as new is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a temporarily usable disposable human excreta bag, said bag including a substantially conical receptacle portion and having a back flap extendin well beyond one side of the mouth of the bag, said flap to underlie the back of the user and to function as a chute, together with tapes connected with said flap and adapted to be tied together to hold the flap and consequently the bag in place while in use.-
2.,As anew article of manufacture, a temporarily usable and disposable human excreta bag, saidbag embodying a conical portion having its mouth shaped to fit between the legs of the user andv well vupinto the crotch with requisite comfort and conformation, said bag having a back flan-said flap being provided with tying straps.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a temporarily usable disposable human excreta bag, said invention, what is bagxembo'dyi'ng a conical portion having its mouth being held in place when the straps are tied together.
