Description

March 7, 1950 A. DI RUBBIO 2,499,733
CIGARETTE HOLDER Filed July 23, 1947 Inventor Antonio 01' Rubbio Attorneys Patented Mar. 7, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in cigarette holders of the type exemplified in my U. S. Letters Patent Numbers 2,346,067, 2,355,368 and 2,365,061.
The primary object of the instant invention is to provide in such cigarette holders improved means for lighting a cigarette while enclosed in the holder, together with improved butt ejecting means, while at the same time simplify the composite structure and providing for a filtered cool smoke.
Other andsubordinate objects, also comprehended by my invention, together with the .precise nature of m improvements will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read in conjunction with the drawing accompanying andforming a part of this specification.
In said drawing: 1
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved cigarette holder in a preferred embodiment thereof;
Figure 2 is a view in longitudinal section partly broken away and drawn-to a larger scale;
Figure 3 is a view in transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a similar view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a similar view taken on the line 55 of Figure 2;
Figure 6 is a view in perspective of the butt ejector; I
Figure 7 is a view in perspective partly in section of the cap and closure member for the inner shell.
Referring now to the drawing by numerals, my improved cigarette holder,'as shown, comprises a mouth bit I with a cylindrical front end 2, an enlarged, concentric, circular collar 3 intermediate its ends, and an enlarged, axial front end bore 4' therein for containing a. filter of any suitable type, not shown.
A cigarette holding sleeve-section 5 is detachably attached to said mouth bit I with a reduced rear end nipple 6 slidably and frictionally fitted onthecylin'drical front end2 ofxsaid b'itagainst the collar 3. A circumferential, external shoulder l is provided on said section 5 adjacent the front end thereof for a purpose presently seen. The front end of the cigarete holding sleeve section 5 is internally stepped to form an internal, circumferential shoulder 8, and rearwardly, of said shoulder 8 a short axial socket for snugly receiving the butt end of a cigarette H). An internal, bevelled, annular flange H is formed in be manifest.
said section 5 to provide a guide for a butt ejector, presently described. In the rear of the flange H, said sleeve section 5 provides a smoke cooling chamber i2 between said flange and the front end 2 of the mouth bit 5.
The butt ejector I 3 comprises a bifurcated, flat metal stem Hi endwise slidable in said flange H in the axis of the mouth bit i and said sec tion 5 with said stem normally extending into the smoke cooling chamber I2. A pair of semicircular, flat, spaced apart, enlarged ears, l5 on the Jfurcations of said stem id forms a pusher head on the butt ejector i3 adapted in the normal position of said ejector, to fit in the socket 9 against said flange H. The furcations of the stem I l form a longitudinal slot It in said stem which together with the spacebetween said ears provides for the passage of smoke therethrough. A narrow tongue ll extends forwardly from the edge of one ear l5 in axially offset relation to said stem 4 to lie alongside the cigarette I0 and facilitates ejection of a butt. As will be seen, the butt ejector I3 is adapted to be slid forwardly in the cigarette sleeve holding section 5 to eject a butt out of thesocket 9 and to be pushed rear wardly into place by inserting the cigarete Ill against the said ears l5 and pushing onthe ciga ,rette while inserting the same in the socket 9. In this connection, the tongue I! facilitates aligning the cigarette Ill with the said ejector, i3 and the socket 9 if said cigarette is placed fiat against said tongue IT. Forlimiting forward sliding of the butt ejector i3, and retaining the same in the cigarette holding sleeve section 51, a pin I S is removably extended with a friction fit partway through said section and slot iii and into thefiange II diametrically of said section 5. By removing the pin I9, the butt ejector i3 may be detached for cleaning purposes, as will Anouter, cylindrical, perforated shell. 21
detachably attached tothe, cigarette holding sleeve section 5 to extend forwardly therefrom, and by means of the rear end thereof which is sleeved, with a friction fit, onto the front end-of 'sai'd section tin engagement with the shoulder l. The front end of said shell 20 is reduced to form an external, cirumferential shoulder 2i thereon and said front end is partly closed by an annular, dished, web 22, all for a purpose presently seen. An internal, annular shoulder 23 is formed in said shell 26 adjacent the rear end thereof by a reinforcing ring 23' pressed into said shell to form said shoulder.
An inner, cylindrical, perforated shell 24, relatively smaller than the outer shell 20 extends forwardly from the cigarette holding sleeve section 5 with the tongue I! of the butt ejector l3 therein. The inner end of said shell 24 is detachably attached to said section 5 by means of an annular reinforcing clip 25 fitted and suitably secured on said end of said shell and frictionally fitting in the front end of said sleeve 5 against the shoulder 8 with a circumferential, external, edge flange- 26 thereon fitting in the outer shell and confined between the shoulder 23' and a washer 21 interposed between said flange 26 and the front end of said section 5. Thus, as will be seen, the flange 26 centers the rear end of the inner shell 24 in the outer shell 20. The clip 25 fits in the section 5 and facilitates maintaining the same in proper alignment in the inner shell 24. The inner shell 24, as will be seen, is' slightly larger in diameter than the cigarette I0' to provide a space around said cigarette that facilitates positioning said shell over said cigarette. A reinforcing,v annular cap 28 is suitably secured on the front end of the inner shell 24 against. the web 22 with a circumferential, reinforcing edge flange 29 of a diameter providing for the same passing through the shoulder 23 when the inner shell 24 is inserted in the outer shell 20. from the rear end of the outer shell 20. A cup type closure member 30 is fitted in and suitably secured in the front end of the inner shell 24, with a front internally threaded, hub 3| extending forwardly with the cap 28 fitted thereon and which is crimped as at 3| against said cap to hold the same thereon.
A cap member 32 is detachably fitted on the front end of. the outer shell 29 against the shoulder 2|. A hollow stem screw 33 is threaded into the hub 3| with an annular head 34 seating in a countersink 35 in the cap member 32, said screw thus detachably attaching the inner shell 24 at its front end in the front end of the outer shell 20 against the web 22. The screw 33 is adapted to provide for lighting. the cigarette H] by placing a lighted match in front of the bore in the screw and drawing on the mouth bit I.
As will now be seen, the inner and outer shells 24, 20 enclose the cigarette l0 and prevent the escape of ashes, or sparks, from the holder while providing, for air in said holder for combustion purposes. A cigarette butt may be ejected into the inner shell and carried therein safely until it burns up. The shells 29, 24 are connected together by simple means for attachment to or detachment from, the cigarette holding sleeve section 5, as a unit, and may be detached quickly and easily from each other for cleaning purposes. A cigarette may be easily lighted in the holder through the screw 33 while the cigarette is protected against rain or wind. By detaching said shells 20, 24 from said section 5, a cigarette butt may be ejected, a new cigarette inserted in the Socket 9, and the shells attached, all quickly and conveniently. The shells 20, 24 are so reinforced that very thin material can be used.
Holes, as at 36 may be formed through the clip 25 and the inner shell 24 for hooking a suitable instrument therein to pull the inner shell 24 out of the outer shell 20 after the screw 33 has been removed.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suflice to impart a clear understanding of my invention, without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention as described, is susceptible of modification, without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a cigarette holder a mouth bit, a cigaretteholding sleeve section fitted over said front end of the mouth bit and having an axial front end socket therein for accommodating the butt end of. a cigarette inserted in the same, a butt ejector in said section, and a pair of inner and outer cylindrical perforated shells detachably fitted into and over the front end of said section, respectively with the inner shell adapted to. enclose a cigarette in said socket and the outer shell enclosing, the inner shell, said shells acting to prevent ashes and sparks from escaping from within the same, closures for the outer ends of said shells, and a member for attaching said closures together to secure said shells together and being hollow for the purpose of lighting a cigarette by holding a lighted match near and in front of said shells and drawing in from the mouth bit.
2. In a cigarette holder, a mouth bit, a cigarette holding sleeve section detachably fitted over said bit and having an axial front end socket therein for accommodating the butt end of a cigarette in the same, said sleeve section having an internal annular flange therein in the rear of said socket forming an opening, and a butt ejector in said sleeve section having a stem slidable in said opening and provided with a pusher head on said stem fitting in said socket for sliding therein to eject the butt upon sliding of said stem forwardly, said stem being bifurcated and said head being split to pass smoke therethrough, and said head being provided with a tongue laterally offset from the axis of said stem to lie alongside a cigarette and align the same with said stem.
