Patented May 30, 1950 VALVE OPERATING MEAN S FOR WAXIN G AND LIKE DEVICES Rolland Lachapelle, Hull, Quebec, Canada Application January 24, 1946, Serial No. 643,045 In Canada February 20, 1945 1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to devices for applying wax or other liquid coatings to surfaces such as floors and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and effective device for applying liquid coatings and including a liquid distributing frame, a tubular handle for the frame adapted to provide a liquid reservoir, and valve means associated with the handle for controlling the discharge of liquid from the reservoir.
The invention will be described with particular reference to the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the device in accordance with the invention,
Figure 2 is a front elevation, partly in section, of the liquid distributing frame of the device, and
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
In the drawings, l is a frame, which may comprise an elongated wood member having a flat lower surface 2. A groove 3 is provided in the surface 2 and extends longitudinally throughout the major portion of the length of the frame to points spaced a short distance from the respective ends of the frame. In the upper portion of the frame, midway between the ends thereof, is provided an inclined threaded socket 4, the lower end of which opens into the groove 3.
An open-ended tubular handle member 5, of light metal or the like, constitutes a liquid reservoir 20 and has a threaded lower end for threaded engagement with the socket 4 and a threaded upper end for reception of a removable closure cap 6. A closure disc I is fixed within the member 5 adjacent the lower end thereof and is provided with a centrally disposed liquid outlet opening 8. Valve means for closing and opening the outlet 8 comprises a plug 9, preferably of rubber or the like, and an operating rod Ill on the lower end of which the plug is mounted. The rod is mounted for reciprocal movement within the handle, the lower end extending through a supporting strip l l which abuts a shoulder 12 on the tubular member. A spring l3, having one end engaging the strip II and the other end bearing on the plug 9, urges the rod and plug in a downward or valve closing direction. A loop l4 formed in the upper end portion of the rod is adapted to bear upon the wall of the handle, as shown, to maintain the rod in axial alinement with the handle. The upper end of the rod is bent right- 2 angularly at l5 and extends outside the casing through a slot l5 therein. A thumbpiece or other manually engageable element I! is secured to the end of the rod and is manually slidable in an upward direction to unseat the plug 9.
A liquid distributing member, such as an absorbent brush or pad, l8, of any suitable fibrous or porous material, such as lambskin, is adhesively or otherwise secured to the lower surface 2 of the frame.
In use, a supply of liquid wax or other coating or polishing liquid, is placed in the reservoir 20 and the pad l8 applied to the surface to be treated. A supply of liquid is admitted to the groove 3 by actuation of the thumbpiece IT, and the pad l8 becomes saturated therewith for distribution over the surface under treatment.
The device described possesses substantially no greater bulk than that of an ordinary waxing device, its entire operating mechanism being housed within the usual elements of such a device. Since such operating mechanism is of simple character, it requires little or no attention and functions efficiently throughout the substantially unlimited life of the device. The pad l8 may be readily replaced when necessary. .By removing the thumbpiece ll, the valve mechanism may be withdrawn from the handle for replacement of the plug 9 or other part thereof.
It will be understood that various changes may be made in the device described without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
In a waxing or like device having a rigid. tubular handle member for receiving a supply of polishing liquid and having an open lower end for dispensing said liquid, valve means controlling said liquid dispensing comprising a partition in the tubular member and fixed thereto in spaced relation above said open end and having an axial opening therein, said partition preventing passage of liquid to the lower portion of the tubular member except through said opening, a valve plug for closing the opening, an operating rod for the valve reciprocally mounted Within the tubular member, said valve plug being mounted on the lower end of the rod, said tubular member being inwardly deformed to provide an inwardly directed annular shoulder integrally formed therein and spaced above the partition, a strip having bearing contact with the lower face of said shoulder, said rod passing through the strip and said strip maintaining the lower end of the rod in axial relation Within the tubular member, said rod having an integral 100p therein adjacent its upper end and engaging the tubular member to maintain said upper end in axial relation with respect to the tubular member, and a spring having one end seated on the strip and the other end seated on the valve plug and urging said plug into closed 10 relation with said opening.
