It will be noted from Figures 3 and 4 that the inner surface 45 of the cut-out portion 44 is located in a horizontal plane and above the bottom face of the plate it. The inner surface of the top plate is further cut-away at 46 to form an inclined in ner surface cooperating with the surface 44 to provide a shoulder 4! for engagement with the rear edge of the blade 30.
The top plate l3 (Fig. has inwardly curved flanges 50 along the end edges to receive semicircular ribs 5! on the end walls of the body I! for slidably mounting said plate. A pin 52 projecting upwardly from the rear wall 53 of the body II has its free end riding in a groove 54 (Fig. 11) formed at the inner face of the plate it. The shoulders 55 and 56 at the ends of the groove act as stops when the plate is shifted in opposite directions.
When the top plate is shifted to the position shown in Figure 3, it is locked in place by a latch 51 (Fig. 2) pivoted at 58 on the side walls of a slot 59 formed in one end of the plate. One free end of said latch engages a recess 60 in an end wall of the body II. A coil spring 6| engaged between a button 62 on the other end of the latch and a flange 63 on the top plate l3 maintains the latch in the recess 60 and the button 62 projected outwardly from the end wall of the top plate in order that said button may be depressed readily to release said plate for sliding movement on the body II.
The handle I4 (Fig. 1) has a central longitudinal passage 65 to receive a rod 66 which has curved spring fingers 6! at the upper end thereof projecting outwardly from a socket fiiiformed at the upper end of the handle. The free ends 69 of the fingers are curved around the ball i5 and held clamped against the ball by the socket 58. The lower end of the rod 66 is threaded into a nut formed integrally and axially of a cap H. Turning of the cap in one direction will loosen the fingers on the ball l6 so that the head Ill may be adjusted at the proper angle suitable for shaving. Rotation of the nut in the opposite direction will tighten the fingers on the ball and retain the head in its adjusted position.
In operation, the blade 3i! is held in place between the guard !2 and forward end of the top plate 13 while the magazine 39 is filled with blades which are pressed upwardly by the spring 43 against the underface of the top plate. The free ends of the springs 26 are located above the rear edge of the blade while said rear edge abuts the shoulder 11 at the inner edge of the recess 44. The lips 32 at the front of the guard 12 prevents forward movement of the blade.
When the blade becomes dull, the button 62 (Fig. 2) is depressed releasing the top plate which is moved rearwardly carrying said blade rearwardly beneath the fingers 26 until said blade drops into the chamber 20. It must be borne in mind that the free ends of the pins 38 projecting from the underface of the plate iii are received by the openings 31 in the blade (Fig. 9) so that when the top plate is shifted rearwardly the blade will be drawn in that direction by said pins.
The plate !3 is fully withdrawn as shown in Figure 4 and the recess 44 in the underface of said plate receives the topmost blade 30 and the pins 38 will pass into the openings 31 in said plate. The top plate is then returned to its forward position shown in Figure 3 and the new blade is carried forwardly by the pins 38 and guided to its operative shaving position by the spring fingers 2E. The free end of the latch 59 will snap into the recess 60 and lock the top plate to the body ll.
The slide 22 will be withdrawn when the chamber is filled with used blades to discharge said blades. The slide 40 is also withdrawn when the magazine has become empty for furnishing a supply of new blades.
What is claimed:
1. A magazine safety razor comprising a head provided with a pair of elongated chambers, a partition separating-the chambers, said chambers being open at the top and bottom, a plate slidably mounted on the head for closing the upper open ends of the chambers, spring fingers secured at one end to the top of the partition and extending transversely across one chamber forming a repository for a stack of discarded blades, a guard at the front end of the body adjacent the repository, the forward end of the plate at the underface being provided with a recess to receive the top blade when on the guard, the free ends of the fingers being disposed at the inner end of said recess and above said recess, the other chamber forming a magazine for a stack of new blades, a spring in the magazine pressing the blade against the inner face of the plate, the blades being provided with spaced perforations, and pins projecting from the underface of the plate and. received by the pins, rearward shifting of the plate causing the pins to force the top blade from the guard and the fingers to guide the top blade into the repository, said pins engaging perforations in the top blade in the magazine for carrying said blade to the guard when the plate is returned.
2. In a safety razor, an enlarged head provided with a repository for a stack of discarded blades and a magazine for a stack of new blades. a plate slidably mounted on the head and closing the top of the repository and magazine, a guard at the front end of the head adjacent the repository, said plate having a recess to receive a top blade on the guard. spring fingers secured at one end on the top of the head and extending over the re ository, the free ends of fingers terminating adjacent to and above the inner edge of the top blade, the stack of new blades having spaced perforations, pins projecting downwardly from the recess and received by the perforations so that when the plate is shifted to the rear end of the head. the top blade on the guard will be forced beneath the fingers and into the repository while the pins will move into the perforations in the uppermost blade in the magazine, and means pressing the blades in the magazine upwardly against the plate, said plate, when returned, shifting the pin-engaged top blade forwardly over the fingers and int position on the guard.
3. In a safety razor, an enlarged head provided with a repository for a stack of discarded blades and a magazine for a stack of new blades, a plate slidably mounted on the head and closing the top of the repository and magazine, a guard at the front end of the head adjacent the repository, said plate having a recess to receive a top blade on the guard, spring fingers secured at one end on the top of the head and extending over the repository, the free ends of fingers terminating adjacent to and above the inner edge oi. the top blade, cooperating means on the top blade and plate for connecting the stack of discarded blades releasably to the under face of the plate so that REFERENCES CITED when the plate is rearwardly the blade The following references are of record in the will be forced beneath the fingers into the refile of this patent:
