Patented June 27, 1950 y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE The present invention relates to a dispensing cap for bottles, jars and the like. More particularly the invention relates to a dispensing cap provided with a pouring spout which may be rotated to pour toward a predetermined side of a container to which the cap is attached. The provision of effective means for accomplishing these results is the general object of the invention.
Dispensing caps of the type with which the present invention is concerned, generally comprise a cap having internal threads to coact with the threads on the neck of a container, and an angularly disposed dispensing tube. A gasket is generally disposed betweenthe cap and the top of the container neck to provide a liquid tight seal therebetween. In such caps it has been difficult to position the dispensing tube in a. predetermined position relative to the container, as for instance parallel to the flattened side of a liquor flask or to a. label on the container, so that the customer may readily observe the label, and at the same time maintain a liquid seal between the cap and the container.
Another object of the invention is to provide a two part pouring nozzle, one part of which provides a cap, and may be secured to the container, as by coacting threads, and the other part of which is provided with a dispensing tube and which may be rotated relative to the cap.
A further object is to provide an improved connection between two devices, such, for instance, as a dispensing tube and a container cap through which the dispensing tube projects such as will also provide a liquid seal both between the device and a, container and between the cap and the dispensing tube.
Other objects of this invention will become more apparent from the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated. The essential features of the invention will be summarized in the claim.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a view of my improved dispensing cap in position on a container; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the cap; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken through the cap and container neck, the plane of the section being indicated by the lines 3-3 on Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a view of the individual parts which make up the improved dispensing cap.
Referring now to the drawings, my improved dispensing .cap as a whole is shown at I and comprises a cap member II and a dispensing Cil member I2. The latter has a dispensing tube I4 55 which projects at an angle relative thereto and which has a passageway I5 extending into the interior of the member I2. A tube I6 forms a part of the member I2 and projects downwardly therefrom. This tube, as shown in Fig. 3, is in communication with the dispensing tube I4. A vent opening I7,of a restricted cross-sectional area, extends through the member I2 and also communicates with the tube I6. Thetube I6 and the passageway I5 permit the ud contents to pass from the container when it is sufficiently tipped. Preferably both the member` I2v and the tube'lt are made of a plastic material andare permanently cemented together along their junction line I9.
The cap member I I has a downwardly extending skirt 25 provided with internal threads 2| adapted and arranged to coact threads 22 formed on the exterior of the container neck 23. A gasket 25 interposed between the cap I I and the top of the container provides a liquid tight seal between the container and the cap.
A feature of the present invention is the arrangement whereby the gasket 25 not only provides a seal between the cap and container but also provides a seal between the cap member Il and the member I2. As illustrated in Fig. 3, the tube I6 of the member I2 extends downward into the container neck through an opening 26 in the top of the cap. The gasket 25 fits the tube I6 snugly and is interposed between the undersurface of the cap and an annular bead 21 integrally formed about the tube I5. As the tube I6 nearly fills the neck of the container the pressure on the gasket 25, due to the securing of the cap to the container compresses the gasket against the tube I6 and the upper surface of the bead 2l thereon, thereby providing a liquid tight seal between the tube and the cap.
I have found that with such construction described, the member I2 may be rotated to place the dispensing tube in any desired position relative to the container on which the spout is used. This facilitates positioning the dispensing tube, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in a predetermined relation to the flat side or label 30 of the container 3l regardless of the rotary movement required to tightly aiix the device securely in position on the container.
The gasket 25 serves not only to provide 'a liquid seal between the component parts of the device and between the device and the container but in addition thereto it serves to retain the member I2 in position on the cap. To this end the bead 21 is positioned on the tube I6 so that when the latter is positioned on the cap the up-- container the pressure between the cap and their top of the container results in pressureof-vthe :f

I claim:
A pouringspoutcomprising-.a cap having an internally' threaded VskirtY to coact with external threads on the neck of a container to secure.' the cap` :in position e thereon, said cap-r having .an opening therethrough; an.-felongated@hollow member rotatably mounted in said opening and having an open ended portion adapted to extend downward into the neck of the container and a portion above the cap, said last named portion being provided with an angularly projecting pouring spout and having a shoulder in engagement with the top of the cap, an annular bead on said downward extending portion spaced from the bottom wall of said cap and having an external v,diameter smallerv thans'theiinternal diameter of the 'opening in the cap,v and a resilient annular washer encircling said downward extending portion and positioned between the inner face of the cap and the upper portion of said bead and acting to retain said member and cap together as a unit/at alb-times, and acting as a seal between the-.container andicap when the cap is in position on a container, and wherein said member mayitbe rotated to adjust the position of said spout While maintaining the seal between the cap ,and fthe container. and the-seal,- between said member and 'the cap.
