UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH H. BUBROWS, OF BOISE CITY, IDAHO.
DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,337, dated December 20, 1881. I ApplicationfiledApril 14,1881. (Modelo To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JosEPH H. BURROWS, of Boise City, in the county of Ada, Idaho Territory, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Desks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention consists in combining with a main section and writing-board two hinged bars pivoted to the lower ends of two sliderods and a block, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the desk when open and ready for use. Fig. 2 is a front view, partly in section, showing the parts in position for the desk to be closed and locked. Fig. 3 is a perspective view, showing the desk closed and a writing-board at the rear thereof raised in position for use. Fig. at is a vertical sectional view of the same with the writing-board lowered.
A represents the base or platform, which supports all the parts of the desk.
B is the main section of the desk, which is of the same length as the platform A, and less than half the width thereof.
To the sides of the main section B the additional sections D D are hinged, so as to open and close like doors and to be secured by a lock. The sections B and D D are provided with pigeon-holes, and with compartments for books, blanks, stationery, and similar articles.
The main section Bis divided about midway of its height by a horizontal shelf, 13, upon which rests an inkstand, b, and, if desired, a mucilage-bottle, b.
To the front edge of the shelf B a writing- I board, B is hinged, so that it may be raised to write upon or allowed to hang 'down when not in use. At the ends ofthe writing-board are studs b which engage with dovetail grooves Z in braces L, having their lower ends pivoted to the sides of the section B. When the writing-board B is not in use it hangs down, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4:, and the braces L stand in recesses in the sides ofthe section B. iVhen the board is raised for use the studs I) slide in the grooves Z until near the upper ends thereof, where they spring into holes l and the upper ends of the braces L spring into notches on the under side of the board, so as to hold it firmly and securely in position.
To the under side of the board B are hinged the upper ends of two bars, M, the lower ends of which are pivoted to the lower ends of two rods, M which are arranged to slide in grooves in the sides of the center compartment of the main section B.
To the upper ends of the rods M is attached a block, M the lower surface of which is provided with a pad, m, of rubber or other suit-able soft and elastic material. The block M also carries a rubber or other elastic diaphragm, m arranged over a hole in the block. WVhen the board B is lowered the bars M draw the sliding rods M down, and with it the block M so as to cause the pad m to fit closely over the inkstand b and the diaphragm m to cover the top of the mucilage-bottle 11*, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. By this means the desk, when closed and locked, may be moved about, or even turned over, without danger of injuring the contents by the spilling of ink or mucilage thereon. hen the board is raised the block M slides up out of the way, as shown in Fig. 1.
At the back of the desk is a writing-board and ink-protecting apparatus, which may be duplicates of the devices above described. As here shown, the writing-board B is provided with studs b ,working in groove 1" in braces L", and operating the same as the devices above described. The writing-board B is connected by bars M withzrods M carrying a block, M with pad and diaphragm, and these devices operate in the same manner as those above described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 7 The combination, with the main section B and the writing-board B of the two hinged bars llL'pivoted to the lower ends of two sliderods, M and the block M, as and for the purpose specified.
