The invention as described herein, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, consists of a screw driver, an object of which is to provide means whereby the bit of the screw driver may be securely retained in the slot 01: a screw head.
Another object of the invention is to provide in a screw driver a retainer projecting from the bit of the device.
A further object of this invention is to provide a screw driver comprising a shank and bit and a slidable retainer member vertically operating there-through.
Another object of the invention is to provide a screw having a head with a slot and a bore depending from the center of the slot.
A primary object of the invention is the provision of means whereby a screw driver bit may be held in the slot of a screw head while driving the screw.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view partly in sec tion of the invention,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the device shown in Figure 1,

In the accompanying drawings and in the following specification the same reference characters are used to designate the same parts and elements throughout and in which It], refers to the invention in its entirety and il, indicates a handle from which depends a shank l2, terminating in a bit [3. A well 14, is provided in the upper end of the handle and from which extends a vertical bore I5, entirely through the shank and. bit. Extending through the bore is a rod Hi, the upper end of which is provided with an annular flange l'i, above which is an enlarged end portion l8. Threaded into the upper end of the well I4, is a bearing member is, having a central bore 26, through which the end 2!, of end portion l8, projects. The hearing it, is pro yided with a transverse slot 22, into which a pin 23, extending transversely through said end 21, normally seats.
Coiled around the end portion I8, is a spring it, the upper end of which bears against member 59, and the lower end against flange ll, whereby the rod [6, is normally held down and its pointed terminal 25, held projected through and below the hit it. Secured by a screw 26, upon the BX? treme end 2'1, of enlargement I8, is a cap 28, slida-ble into the mouth 29, of the well I4, and held normally seated therein by the action of spring 24.
For use in connection with the above described screw driver there is provided a screw 30, the head SI, of which has a bore 32, formed centrally in the bottom of the slot 33.
In general use the point 25, of the centering rod IE5, remains projected below the edge 34, of the bit I 3, whereby the bit may be instantly centered in the slot 33, and held retained therein during the driving operation of the screw, the said point 25, holding the bit in place in the slot and preventing it from jumping out of the slot and multilating the screw head, the slot and material into which the screw is being driven.
When it is necessary to use the device with a common screw, the point 25, may readily be forced within the bore l5, by pressing it against the tension of spring 24, which action will force cap 28, out of the well M, as indicated in Figure 1 of the drawings, whereupon the pin is raised from its slot 22, and by giving the cap a quarter turn the pin will cross the slot 22, and seat upon the upper surface 35, of bearing l9, thus holding the point 25, above said edge 34, of the bit. This will also permit of sharpening the bit.
Changes in shape, size and rearrangement of details and parts such as come within the purview of the invention claimed may be resorted to, in actual practice, if desired.
Having now described the invention that which is claimed to be new and desired to be procured by Letters Patent is:
l. A manually operative tool comprising a screw driver shank having a tip and a handle attached to said shank, a bore formed in said shank and a counterbore formed in said handle communicating with said bore, a bearing, having an aperture and threadedly secured in said counterbore, said bearing having a slot in the upper surface thereof, a rod slidably positioned in said bore having an enlarged portion attached thereto and slidably positioned in said counterbore, said enlarged portion being positioned in the aperture, a collar attached to said rod adjacent said enlarged portion for limiting the sliding movement of said rod, a spring seated on said collar and engaging said bearing and normally urging said rod through said tip, a transverse pin secured in said enlarged portion and removably disposed in said slot for limiting the axial travel of said rod when said bearing is rotated in said counterbore to raise the bearing.
2. A manually operative tool comprising a screw driver shank having a tip and a handle attached to said shank, a bore formed in said shank and a counterbore formed in said handle communicating with said bore and opening through one end of said handle, a bearing having an aperture and threadedly secured in said counterbore, said bearing having a slot in the upper surface thereof, a rod slidably positioned in said bore having an enlarged portion attached thereto and slidably disposed in said counterbore, said enlarged portion being passed through the aperture, a collar attached to said rod adjacent said enlarged portion, a, spring seated on said collar and engaging said bearing and nor mally urging said rod through said tip, a transverse pin secured to said enlarged portion and disposed in said slot to hold the lower end of said rod within said bore when said bearing is rotated in said counterbore to thereby raise the bearing,
a cap attached to the upper end of said enlarged portion whereby it may be grasped by the fingers of the operator, and said cap being normally biased by said spring to a position within said counterbore.
