Description
Sept. 26, 1950 J. L. BUHL. 2,523,81 1 Dacoy ANCHOR Filed Oct. 23, 1947 Patented Sept. 26, 1950 Nrrao s'rATEs NT ortica Claims.
This invention relates to decoy anchors and its principal object is to provide a decoy; for example, a decoy simulating a duck having a cavity or recess extending inward from its lower side and adapted to contain the anchor means.
Another object is to provide a shell or housing disposed'in the cavity or recess in the body of the decoy for containing the anchor and the line.
Another object is to provide leakproof means in connection with the shell or housing for .preventing water from entering the shell when the decoy is placed on the surface of a body of water. As is well understood, decoys of this character are permitted to float on a body of water when in use, and the anchor is provided for preventing the decoy from floating away.
With these and other objects `and advantages in view, this invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter fully described and more particularly deiined in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation, partly broken out of a decoy equipped with anchoring means, shown .partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the anchor;
Fig. 3 is a fragmental side elevation of the shell that contains the anchor and line; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective View looking from below of a pliable washer or gasket for making a leak proof joint between the shell and its cover.
Referring to said drawing, the reference char- ;acter Il) designates the body of a decoy, for instance, a decoy simulating a duck, having an inwardly extending recess or cavity Il which opens out through the lower side oil the body of the decoy.
Contained in the recess ll and secured to the body l@ is a shell l2, closed at its upper end as at I3 and open at its lower end. Adjacent its open end, the shell is formed with an annular flange iii which bears against the body l0, and may be fastened thereto by screws or nails I5. Beyond the liange Ill, the open end of the shell is formed with rolled or otherwise formed threads l to receive the threaded flange I1 of a screw cap I3.
To provide a leakproof joint between the shell and cap, a rubber washer or gasket I9 is held (c1. eis-3) t against the flange E4 by a tight fit on the threadserves as astorage place for the anchor 2i] which is preferably formed of metal in order to obtain considerable weight and said anchor is here shown in the form of a spool to which is tied one end of a line 2l composed of stout cord. The line is wound upon the spool and its other end is tied to alooped member 22 that projects inward from the wall of the container. The looped member 22 may be formed by slitting the threaded end part of the container along two parallel lines and then bending the tongue formed between the slits into the loop of member 22. The flanges 23 of the spool may be notched as at 24 to enable the spool to pass the member 22.
The washer or gasket I9 is formed with a slit 25 in one face and isprovided below the slit with a radially extending hole 26 through which the line may extend when the anchor has been withdrawn from the container.
When the anchor is not in use it is stored in the container with the cap screwed upon the shell. To use the anchor in anchoring the decoy, the cap is unscrewed, the anchor removed from the shell, the end portion of the line, adjacent the loop is drawn through the slit 25 and into the hole 26. The cap is then screwed back in place and by screwing the cap rmly in place the washer or gasket is compressed and the slit portion is compressed thereby preventing water from entering the container through the hole 26. The anchor is dropped into the body of water and the decoy placed on the surface.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described or uses mentioned.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A combined decoy and decoy anchor comprising a decoy body capable of floating on a body of water and having a recess extending inwardly from its lower side, a container secured in said recess and provided with a screw cap, a looped member struck up from the wall of the container, a weighted anchor adapted to be contained in the container, and a line secured to the looped member and to the anchor for connecting the decoy and the anchor.
2. A combined decoy and anchor comprising a decoy body capable of floating on a body of water and having a recess extending inwardly from its lower side, a container secured in said recess, a screw cap adapted to be secured on said container, a pliable washer between a ange on the container and the cap, said washer having a radially extending slit therein opening to a radial hole, an anchor, and a line secured to said anchor and to the container on its inner side, said line being arranged to be passed into said hole when the anchor is withdrawn from the container, whereby when the cap :is screwed tightly on the conf-410 tainer, the washer ls compressed and the walls of the hole closed upon the line.
3. A combined decoy and decoy anchor comprising a decoy body capable of oating on a body of water and having a recess extending inwardly from its lower side, a cylindrical vcontainer arranged in said recess, a looped member provided in the container adjacent the outer end thereof, a container cap for closing the entrance to the container, an anchor adapted to be received in the recess, and 'a line vsecured to said anchor and to said looped member.
4. A lcombined decoy and decoy anchor comprising a decoy body capable of oating on a body of water and having a .recess extending inwardly from its lower side, a container having a threaded open outer end secured in said recess, a threaded cap for closing the entrance to the container, a spool constituting an 'anchor and of a size adapted to be removably received in the container, and a line having one end secured to said spool and the other end secured to the container,
5. A combined decoy and decoy anchor comprising a decoy body capable of floating on a body of water and having a recess extending inwardly from its lower side, a container having an open end, said container being outwardly flangedadjacent the open end and exteriorly threaded at said end and secured in said recess, the container provided with a anged and screw 'threaded cap, a gasket arranged between said flanges, a member struck up from the wall of the container adjacent the outer end thereof, a weighted anchor adapted to be contained in the container, and a line secured to said member and to the anchor for connecting the anchor to the decoy.
