'' UNITED; STATES PATENT :OFFICE 1 v 2,529,167 f f l Y LEAKPROOF OIIIQFILTER Y Felix Lewis and James rShuler, Savannah, Gra.` v y Application April 26, 1946, Serial No. v665,154 Y This invention relates to a leak proof oil filter for internal combustion engines or other types of engines wherein an oil filter is incorporated in the lubricating system.
An object of the invention is to provide a filter l.'
which will prevent the loss of oil due to the failure of the sealing gasket and the resultant vdamage to the yengine Vdue ytothe failure of fthe gasket.Aw
Another j'object ofthe invention isv to provide a, ltenhaving a reservoijj"whichA will 4 maintain lubrication of the engine should] the filter fail toproperly function. 1 y With theabove and'other objects and'advantages in View the invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed an illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view partly in section and partly broken away of an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a modified form thereof and Figure 3 is a detailed fragmentary view of a modified form of connection for the filter.
Referring more in detail to the drawings the reference numeral IU designates the filter embodying the invention which comprises the housing shell or main oil container I2, having formed integral therewith adjacent the top edge thereof :1.
the circular portion I4 forming an annular oil reservoir. The shell I2 is formed witha concave bottom I6 having the center fiat circular portion I`8 on which is positioned a washer 20 and the filter cartridge 22 is seated on the washer and the concave bottom maintains the filter cartridge out of contact with the bottom of the container. The formation of the bottom also increases the rigidity of the bottom I6.
The portion I8 at the center thereof is provided with an opening 24 to receive the main drainage pipe 26 which is welded to the portion I8 at 28 to maintain the pipe in position in the container at the center thereof. The cartridge 22 being of the conventional type is provided with a vertical bore 30 for the reception of the pipe 2B. The pipe 2,6 for a major portion thereof within the container I2 is provided with perforations 32 for the passage of filtered oil there'- through and a partition 34 at the top thereof closes the pipe 2B and the portion above the partition 34 is internally threaded at 36 to receive the bolt 38.
The bolt 38 retains the removable cover 40 on the container. The cover 40 is formed with the 1 Claim. (ol. 21o-1183 f A eonvexv portion 4,2 which closes the container Y I2 DrOperly Seated on the beads 5I of the circularA and the'fiat ring portion 44' which coversfthe circular portionl I4 and the portion `44isprovided with an outer depending marginal flange 4 6 and an inner circular shoulder 48 'which engages the` inner marginal edge of the containerfl2 Vand a ring gasketlit is `placed in engagement with the inner face of the portion 44 intermediate to the flange 45 and'shoulder 48 to form an voil tight seal betweenthe cover container and the beads 5I of the reservoir on which the gasket is seated. 'Y The head of the bolt 3 8 engages a washer 52 resting onjthe circular `fiat portion 54V of the cover 40 anda tapered coil spring'56 engaging the top of the cartridge 22 and the inner face of the portion 54 will when the bolt is tightened to seal the cover and container hold the cartridge in position. The pipe 26 at the lower end thereof is provided with a T-head 58 for connection to the outlet pipe 60 to the engine not shown and with the circular portion I4 by pipe 62 and cou; pling 64 on the outlet 66 secured to the bottom of the circular portion I4 by welding 68 or the like. The container at the center thereof is provided with an inlet 'I0 which by means of the elbow 'I2 is connected to the outlet of the engine.
Should the gasket 50 fail oil would not leakv out of the container but would enter circular portion I4 and return to the engine by means of the pipe 62 which is connected to the T-head 58 which, in turn, is connected to the outlet pipe 6i! to the engine thus preventing the engine from being damaged from loss of oil.
In Figure 2 the lter I li comprises the housing shell I'2 and circular portion I4 but a partition 'I4 is formed adjacent the bottom of the shell and the pipe 26 is welded thereto at 16 in the opening 'I8 and a convex washer 8|) supports the lter cartridge 22 thereon.
The bottom 82 of the housing I2 is convexed to form the vacuum chamber 84 which is provided with an elbow 86 seated in the central opening 88 and welded thereto at 90 and pipe 6U connects the shell to the engine.
Immediately below the partition 'I4 an elbow 92 is seated in the opening 94 and secured to the housing by weldingSB and the elbow 92 is connected by a pipe 62 to the outlet 6B of the circular l portion I4 as previously described.
In this instance two ring gaskets 98 and |00 are positioned intermediate the flange 46 and shoulder 48 and a depending triangular annular projection |02 spaces the gaskets so that they are portiont The operation of this form is as previously described the oil returning to the chamber 84 from the circular portion I4 and thence back to the engine.
In Figure 3 there is shown a modied form of the invention shown in Figure 2, wherein the bottom 82 of the housing I2 has a T coupling I04'secured to the opening 88 therein by welding 9D. The pipes 60 and 62 are connected to the coupling |04, in the Ymanner shown, so that the oil in the chamber 84 will not back up into the reservoir I4.
Thus a leak proof iilter has been provided that will accomplish the objects of the invention and it is believed that the operation and construction of the lter Will be apparent to those `skilled Iin the art.
It is also to be understood that changes'in Y. iA lter, -comprisinga shellv having a concave bottom, a .raised apertured circular portion centrally of the bottom, a Washer on said portion, adrainage pipe having a plurality vof perforations thereinY passing through .the apertured circular portion yand fixed to the Ashell outwardly `of the bottom thereof, :an .oil flter .element over .the drainage pipe within the shell, and engaging lthe circular portion in the .bottom thereof, anfan- -nular ,circular ,portion formed on said` shell adja- 4 cent the open top thereof, a removable cover for said shell and said annular circular portion, means engaging the upper rims of said shell and said annular circular portion and said cover for sealing the said shell and annular circular portion, a partition in the pipe, threads in said pipe above said partition, a bolt passing through said cover to engage the threads of said pipe to retain said cover in place, a spring interposed between said icoveriand said filter element and about said bolt and the upper end of said pipe to retain said filter element xed in said shell, a T-shaped head on the lower end of said drainage pipe, an over flow pipe connecting the annular circular portion with the T-head on the drainage pipe and means for connecting the shell to an outlet pipe .from the oil system of the engine.
