This invention appertains to novel and useful improvements in garments for use particularly by small children or babies.
An object of this invention is to protect the front portion of a baby during feeding time and also protect the top portion of a baby chair by covering the tray thereof.
Another object of this invention is to provide a pocket formed by side pieces attached to the lower side edges of the main body portion of a child's garment and by attaching the lower end of the garment to or adjacent the tray of a conventional high chair.
Another object of this invention is to detachably secure a pair of sleeves to the upper portion of the main body member in order that the device may be used selectively with and without the sleeves.
Another purpose of the present invention is to yieldingly attach a pair of clamps in such a manner that the lower edge of the main body portion may be maintained firmly in its attachment to a conventional babys chair.
Ancillary objects and features of novelty will become apparent to those skilled in the art, in following the description of the preferred form of the invention, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of the invention, showing the same in use;
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing a second form of the invention in use;
Figure 3 is an exploded pattern View showing the main component parts of the invention shown in Figure l;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the invention;

Figure 6 is an enlarged view illustrating a detail of construction;
Figure '7 is a fragmentary portion shown in plan of an end of one of the sleeves utilized in association with and forming a part of the invention;
Figure 8 is a pattern view of the second form of the invention illustrated in Figure 2;
Figure 9 is a fragmentary perspective View showing the lower portion of the form of the invention in Figure 2;
Figure 10 is a sectional view taken on the line l0|0 of Figure 9 and in the direction of the arrows; v
Figure 11 is a sectional View taken substantially on the line H-H of Figure 9 and in the direction of the arrows, and;
Figure 12 is a fragmentary plan view showing a hem around the extension or tray covering with the resilient member therein.
The present invention is adapted foruse particularly by small children who are of an age to partially feed themselves. It is often found that children, particularly at a tender age, are incapable of feeding properly and often drop a portion or the entire edible on their laps, on the tray of the baby chair, on their arms, etc. It is one of the prime purposes of the present invention to protect the child and more particularly his garments as well as the tray of the conventional baby chair from exposure to the baby food.
A pocket is formed at the lower end of a main body portion by attachment of the end of the main body portion to either the tray or the rails adjacent the tray of a child's chair. If it is found desirable the sub combination is used without the completing element which forms a protective covering for the tray of the baby chair.
Referring first to Figures 1, 3-7 the first form of the invention is illustrated. This first form is provided with the main body portion Iii having substantially straight side edges l2 and I4 respectively. The general overall shape of the main body portion is substantially rectangular, departing from a true rectangular shape at the upper end thereof wherein there is provided means for attachment to the neck of a baby. This means includes a recess IE formed in the upper edge of the said main body portion IE. The lower edge l8 of the main body portion is substantially straight.
Semi-circular side pieces 20 and 22 respectively are secured to the lower side edges I4 and it through the utility of stitching 24. Thus attached, the side pieces 29 and 22 cooperating with the lower end of the main body portion form a pocket generally indicated at 26 in order to receive edibles and the like therein.
Sleeve pieces 28 and 30 respectively are identical in shape. These sleeves pieces have five edges, the longer two 32 and 34 respectively being convergent and terminating in another edge 36. This edge 36 is at the lower end of the sleeve piece and is adapted to be hemmed in order to form a wrist engaging element. The opposite end of the said sleeve piece 28 (and the sleeve piece 30) includes two straight edges 38 and 40 which are inclined relative to each other, forming an obtuse angle at their end junction.
The pattern pieces shown in Figure 3 are assembled in the following manner: 1 The hem 42 and a hem 44 are provided in the usual manner (by folding a small portion of the material on itself and stitching) on the edges l2 and [4 of the main body piece Ill. A tape 46 is attached to the arcuate recess and more specifically, to the material adjacent the arcuate recess, by means of stitching. This tape is cut on the bias in order that a slight amount of stretch may be effected. r I V The straight edge of the semi-circular side pieces 20 and 22 respectively is hemmed and stitched at 48 and 50 respectively and the arcuate edges of each of the side pieces is stitched to the lower portion of the side edges I2 and I4 as described above.
The lower edge I8 of the said main body portion I has gathers 52 therein and a resilient strip 54 of conventional elastic material attached thereto by means of rows of stitches. Sets of snap fasteners 5t and 58 respectively are provided adjacent each end of the said resilient strip of material 54 in order to form adjustable fastening means for attachment of clamping members 62 and 04 respectively. A loop is thus provided at each end of the resilient strip 54 in order to accommodate bight 66 of each clamping member. The preferable form of clamping member is a simple hook which is adapted to engage either the tray or the arms supporting the tray of an ordinary baby chair. Though this expedient the lower edge I8 of the main body portion is stretched to the open position and maintained in place. The pocket 26 is thus provided and held in place in order to receive and maintain edibles which the child may drop, throw or otherwise maladjust.
The sleeves made from the sleeve pieces 28 and 30 include the steps of folding longitudinally thereof and attaching the free ends 32 and 34 together by means of either a single or a plurality of rows of stitching. This junction 68 extends longitudinally of the sleeve piece. The edges 38 and 46 are hemmed and stitched and stiffening pads 7'0 and 12 respectively are provided at the edges 40 and 38 in appropriate positions in order to accommodate conventional snap fasteners I4 and 18 respectively. These conventional snap fasteners attach to the main body portion I0 adjacent the upper portions of the edges I2 and I4 wherein similar complemental snap fasteners are present. Strengthening pieces I8 and 80 are provided adjacent the said complemental snap fasteners 82 and 84 as is seen in Figure 6.
Referring now to Figures 8-12 and 2 a substantially identical device is shown with the addition of a single element which is an extension 88 which in this case is integral with the lower edge of the main body portion 90. The said extension has an arcuate edge 92 extending almost the full distance therearound thereby forming the extension 88 of substantially elliptical configuration. At the junction of the main body portion 90 and the said extension 08 there is supplied a tape 94 which is attached by means of stitching 96 and 98. tension is raised through the use of the strip 94 in order to form a hem-like housing I-00 to accommodate a resilient band I02. This resilient band extends completely around the edge of the substantially elliptical extension 88 and is adapted for use as a clamping device. This clamping device is of course utilized for operative engagement with the usual tray of a babys chair as is seen in Figure 2.
Means yieldingly supporting the clamping members or hooks B2 and 64 is provided. The particular yielding means in this form of the invention may be seen best in Figure as including a pair of resilient strips of material I06 and I08 which are stitched to the lower portion of the main body member 90 and the tape or binding strip 94. Of course, the strips of material A quantity of the material of the ex-.
The sleeves described in connection with the sub-combination are used in this form of the invention as desired.
It will be noted that the preferred material of construction in the present described device is very pliable and thin commercial plastic due to its water repellant properties.
With reference to the sleeves utilized in both forms of the invention it will be noted that the lower ends thereof, taking in the lower edges 36 of each sleeve are hemmed as seen at I and I22 respectively. These hems have gathers therein and a resilient strip is placed in each of the said hems I20 and I22. This construction allows the ends of the sleeves to be rather tightly bound around the wrist of a child.
It is apparent that certain variations may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention. Accordingly, limitation is sought only in accordance with the scope of the following claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
